  1. My wife woke me up to go to the hill this morning. I have to admit that I wasn't as excited as I normally am because i knew the conditions were pretty lousy. We've had some warm weather and there is a lot of ice and bare spot on our local hill. I decided to rent skis just for fun. The last time I skied was when I was 14 or 15 and I traded my snowboard with a friend for a half day so he could try it. That was over 20 years ago. before that I would ski 2-3 times a year. I had a lot of fun. I have to say that I am a better skier now than I ever was. My wife was annoyed with me because she said I skied better than she did and looked like I had been doing it for years. I didn't really tackle any hard runs. I have to say that snowboarding has given me a fairly good understanding and feeling for skiing. I could feel how the edges were working and I was trying to transfer the skills I had on a board to the skis. The things I that i found worked for me were; -makng sure my shins were pressuring the front of my ski boots by bending at the knees and not the waist. (as i got tired, i think that i started hunching over and I had less control) -putting pressure on the inside ball of my outside foot to keep the edge in contact. -later I started to roll my ankles to go from edge to edge more quickly. -I like skiing on steeper sections of the hill. I found that you could break up your movement from edge to edge and it was almost easier to control yourself and turn than on a snowboard where you really have work to transfer your weight over to the other edge (I find going form heelside to toeside challenging sometimes on steep). I would say that I was carving my edges about 10% of the time. It was a fun way to spend a day on the hill with lousy conditions. I will do it again. i might even pick up a pair of skis this spring when they go on sale...:D I know there are some other people that have crossed over to the OTHER darkside. Any hints? Do you find that snowboarding has improve your feel for skiing?
  2. Nice. I can imagine how hard that would be to ride. Have you tried to use shorter screws? Try not to have any collisions with that bad boy. It reminds me of the times my dog used to get into porcupines when I was a kid! :p I found that on relatively flat hardpack the traction is pretty good because all your weight is on one wheel.
  3. That looks like the most fun that could be had on a snowboard! It totally reminds me of the days when we would shovel hits into a halfpipe. I remember trying to do hand plants on a Safari with three strap bindings and sorels with skiboot liners stuffed in them. :p To be young again! Thanks Bryan.
  4. i took my 36" wheel out a spin for the first time last night. It was fun. The wheel is so big and has so much momentum it rolls over anything. Its a little scary to get onto. You have to run and jump onto the pedals.
  5. Was it the system that he was using in the videos you posted? I thought they were the Apex system at first. They look very similar.
  6. The guys from Apex were just interviewed on Daily Planet on the Discovery Channel. i was sitting at the computer and heard "Plate Bindings" and "Carving" coming from the TV. I think that is the first time I've heard alpine gear mentioned on TV.
  7. It looks like it was a beautiful day! What was the 200cm board like? What is it like to ride a longboard like that?
  8. Great riding in that one. The one guy was really plowing through the chop at about 30 seconds. Nice switch 360! This kind of stuff definitely makes alpine look appealing to the uninitiated. I could watch this over and over. Back when I first rode alpine i loved to ride different terrain. Now that I'm back into it and feeling old I stick to the groomers ;).
  9. I'm jealous! :biggthump There's only ice fishing up here these days! Where do you live? What weight rod/line were you using?
  10. I just bought a new 36" Kris Holm road unicycle. Can't wait to ride it! I will deck it out with a hydraulic brake and touring handle for spring training! :D I'm a little nervous to be that high off the ground. I now have more unicycles than snowboards. My wife is not impressed! ;)
  11. Get it! I double dare you!:D I don't know about the butt but it will probably make your bank account look smaller!
  12. Me too. i just lean and fall off the board.
  13. Man! i wish i could ride like that!
  14. Haha. i was thinking the same thing! :D
  15. Great video. I like the music. I'm going to check out more. Art vs Science.
  16. i still ride with my knees together because of CK! :)
  17. I've been trying to figure this out. What is the difference between a Cross-through and a cross-over? Does anyone have example?
  18. At some point at the end of the day, I take one run too many, I'm tired and have a good crash. Usually knock the wind out of myself and call it a day. When I was younger, I never let myself heal and I had a lot of problems with my front ankle. I think the tendons got stretched. A couple of times it popped out of joint while I was on the chairlift from the weight of the boot and board. Excruciating pain, I would get to the top and just collapse off the chair because my leg wouldn't support me. I don't have problems with that ankle now but my other ankle has bugged me since I injured it unicycling.
  19. I hope he doesn't get "Bowed" with it! :D
  20. Still no video but i found some other hardbbooters here in Whitehorse. There were 5 alpine boards on the hill on Saturday including myself. One board was an assym board with soft bindings ridden by a younger kid but his parents were hardbooting! I think I was more excited to see other hb riders than they were. :D I have also gotten very comfortable with my hot blast. I am no longer scared of it. it is so fun on groomers. I even plow through some rough chop pretty confidently. Fun!
  21. These events seem great. I'd love to get to one some day. They just have to match up with my spring break as a teacher. i am very envious of the people going!:)
  22. I was watching the videos in this thread. http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=28518 I was wondering what plate system Tyler Jewel is riding in the second video. You can kind of see it at about 1:04. It sort of looks like the Team Canada Apex plate system but I figured it was something different.
