  1. Nice catch I'm just getting geared up for the pier/shore season here on west side of Lake Michigan... Those all nighters can be some of the best fishing times I have ever had :ices_ange:ices_ange
  2. Thanks for the replies guys... The info got me looking into things I never would have considered... I honestly never thought you would get solid consideration out west without any significant teaching experience/certs (I guess that's just me being an uneducated, midwestern rider )... I might seriously consider making the move out west and trying to be a snow bum this winter with the economy sucking so much here in the Chicago area... As I look deeper into this, some other (and probably noobie-ish) questions have come up: - It seems like resorts hire many people that come from out of town based on how they offer housing and such... Will resorts hire based off of my resume + phone interviews or would I have to plan on attending one of these clinics that they offer just before the season? - With multiple ski resorts being owned by the same companies, should I apply at each individual resort? I'm assuming that each resort would be independent when hiring staff like this... I just don't want to tick off someone at say Intrawest by sending the same person the same application 3 or 4 times... I know these probably seem like questions that seem very noobie like and make me sound pretty uneducated on the subject of snowboarding... I've just never had the time/money to make it out west, so I'm not sure how things work compared to what we have here in the Midwest... I just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row if I consider this as a viable option.... Y'all are a great resource, and I appreciate all of the info I have been able to gather off of Bomber over the years.... Thank you very much... Derek K.
  3. So, long story short: I graduated in May with my degree in Entertainment and Sports Promotions... Since then, it's been a rough go for me in the resume/job application game... Luckily, I was able to fall back onto my usual Summer job and earn enough to get by while looking for something permanent... With that job coming to an end, I'm once again looking for something to pay the bills... This got me thinking about maybe trying to get a foot in the door in the snowboard/ski world... I know many of you guys and gals are currently involved in this type of career, so if you don't mind, I would like to get any input you would be willing to share. Is there anything I can expect to find in the snowsports industry dealing in Marketing/PR? If so, where can I find these job postings? I know someone has to be promoting all of these competitions that happen, I just haven't come across very many on job boards I have been looking at that cater to the stick and ball sports... Also, for more of a temporary job, I have given thought to trying to get an instructing job at one of the hills here in the MidWest... What is the best way to go about getting my foot in that door? Do I need AASI Certification before I get considered, or is that something that you can get down the road? I really am thinking that this might be the more fun option for me if I can't get something permanent locked down by October or so... Basically, I am a kid just out of college who is trying to deal with a down economy :( Thanks for your input
  4. There is an 80% chance Marquette Mountain will be open April 19th and 20th....
  5. I guess I am a full time student for 3 more weeks... Then it's off to the big scary Real World I'll be looking for a career in Sports Marketing and Promotions... Right now the plan is to get my foot in the door in the world of Motorsports....
  6. We're getting 10-14 inches of fresh snow within the next 12 or so hours, on top of a very good spring base here at Marquette Mountain.... I am not complaining about crappy spring conditions at all :D
  7. Bah.... Mike Iaconelli needs to fall out of a moving boat and be left in the middle of a lake.... I can't stand the guy... His act is getting very old and tiresome... You are a pro bass fisherman... No need to scream and yell like a crazed lunatic when you catch a fish... His temper tantrums are also very borderline... I really wish B.A.S.S. would have had the guts to suspend him for multiple tourneys when he kicked that undersized fish overboard a few years ago... Same deal when he started throwing his equipment around and kicking his stern light during last season's classic... I understand that the Classic is a big deal... Unfortunately, this seems to be an everyday thing for him... This isn't a stick and ball sport... There is no need to get your adrenaline going so you can preform better... Just shut up and act professional
  8. Kinda funny that you guys had that comment made towards you this weekend... I got something very similar on Thursday from a racer's parent/coach... This weekend, Marquette hosted the USSA J3/J4 Championships... So I am out riding early and minding my own business... Because their race courses had about 1/3 of the hill closed off too freeskiing, my favorite run had become the obvious choice for warmups/coat running.... So I am going along, and I get to the lift area... I go down to release my back foot and undo my buckles for the ride up... I stand back up and get tapped on the shoulder and hear "Excuse me".... I turn and acknowledge the guy... He says "hi" and then asks why I am "tearing up" the run I am riding... I say that it's my favorite and that I always ride it... He then tells me that I am "being very inconsiderate to the racers who are warming up for a very important race." He then explains that the kids are running Super-G and that my ruts are preventing the kids from warming up properly... They are getting bounced around because they are on Super-G skis and that they are trying to tuck and such... I just give the guy a confused look, say "Ok"... Then being the whitty, smartbutt that I am, I then mention "I'm sorry to be an inconvenience, but if that is a problem, what happens when they have ruts on the race course?" The guy just says "That's different." I just give up, say ok, and then go over to get on the lift... It never ceases to amaze me how self serving parents can get when it comes to youth sports... And I don't think I have ever taken an intended insult as such a compliment in my life :p
  9. Sorry, I've been off Bomber for a few days... Was that you that I saw from the Snowfield chair on Friday afternoon, around lunch time? I saw someone on an Oxygen and some blue (?) boots? Unfortunately, I was helping some friends out with their riding, so I couldn't come over and say "hi"... Anyways, if you'll be around, I'll be out at MQT Mtn. tomorrow, probably from 11 am or so till 3ish.... I'll be in a Green/Yellow/Black NMU Alpine Race Team jacket and Blue/white Motocross helmet... Feel free to flag me down and say "Hi" :o

  11. :smashfrea:smashfrea And yet someone who is graduating college this May can't figure it out Can someone help a moron out?
  12. Personally, the helmet issue has been something that I took steps to upgrade a few years ago. I see ski helmets as flimsy and only offering minimal protection for the speeds that we are going. One day I was out riding some hardpack and I had an epiphany. Hard snow is no softer than packed dirt or sand. As someone who has always toyed around on quads and dirtbikes, why should I wear a helmet with so much more padding and more ridged shell for that when I am only going slightly faster on a surface just as hard? Since I had already been riding in a full face Solomon helmet, it was a no-brainer... For the price of a good ski helmet, you can get a Motocross helmet that , IMO, offers a ton more protection. You have a more rigid shell, more internal padding, more contact area inside the helmet, and a better chin strap...
  13. During the Speed Trap event at Marquette Mountain's Spring Carnival a few seasons ago, a friend of mine pretty much sliced a Field Mouse in half... He claims he never saw it... We all knew from the blood trail coming off the ski however that something wasn't right... A few of us hiked up to find the poor fella, just off to the left of the track, sliced in 2....
  14. Apparently Glen Plake was out here for some reason.... And of course it has to be the 40*f, drizzly, foggy day where I chose to stay home It would have been cool to get an autograph or something.... I think anyone that can rock as long as he has is ok in my book, one board or two....
  15. Been there, done that man... I hope you can make a speedy recovery.... Best wishes from the U.P. of Michigan....
  16. I'm a local up here at Marquette Mountain, and that is basically the only place I ride other than the occasional trip up to Mt. Bohemia....
  17. Bummer that I am gonna have to miss some fellow hardbooters coming up my way... I'll be on the road, heading home for the holidays come Saturday Morning, and probably won't ride up here again till the 28th or so.... Oh Well... The snow is awesome too... Very good coverage and nice firm cord...
  18. I'll second the Marquette New Years Eve statement... I haven't missed it once since I started going to school here
  19. What days were you planning on riding? I'll be around Friday and possibly Saturday morning before I pack up and head home for the holidays....
  20. Look, Ive defended the "Racer" mentality since I've been here.... Unfortunately, I am just some college kid that enjoys snowboarding, and who happens to have a dream of racing for a living, or at least an ability to race without thinking about the financial consequences of going to said race.... Just because I got XX more posts, does it mean that I "know" more than half of the people that show up here? HELL NO!!!! I am learning everyday from people that post here, whether their postcount is 20 or 1020..... It doesn't make a difference.... If their concept makes sense to me, in my head, I am going to try it, and let my own results dictate the outcome....
  21. Is an alpine portion really being considered for the Rev. Tour? I'd do that in a heartbeat, especially if it's here in the Midwest (and open to us that aren't exactly Juniors :o )
  22. Don't feel bad.... I did that yesterday as well.... 2nd run of the season
  23. I have no idea what was put in there other than it was a SWIX kick wax that was hot ironed in... There is still some that can be scraped off, but for the most part, most of the excess is gone... I am assuming that I can't just hot scrape and pull most of it out?
