  1. I don't pay enough attention to the temp. to know the coldest I have been on the slopes, but when I went a few weeks back they had closed the hill. It was -30C and I was good to go, but what can you do when they won't spin the Bullwheels?
  2. I bet kids could wear them, if the kid was small enough. You got any kids?
  3. And while you are at it, better dig deep: http://buyabeercompany.com/ Gotta keep the supply flowing......
  4. Hey do you guys have dogs? http://www.bark4beer.com/

A pony panel is a sub panel, usually in a garage or workshop, usually 60A or so. It's so you can run outlets without having to go back in the house to reset them if the breakers trip.
  6. I have a skimore pass thatmy GF used for two days when she was here this week. I don't know how picky they are about ID, but it's up for grabs to anyone who could convince Nakiska they are Alexis. It has one more discount day, then a free day, then another free day after two discount days. PM me if you are interested.

I was living in Toronto when we had the black out a few years back. I pulled out the coleman stove after the BBQ ran out of propane. We didn't have power for three days, but had no problem staying fed from the freezer and pantry. I would have rather had a generator, but such is life sometimes. I'm glad it happened in the summer, winter would have really sucked. My ex's parents were affected by the ice storm (in about 99 I think it was) in eastern Ontario and Quebec. They live in a small rural community and everyone camped at one house to conserve supplies. Her father then wired a pony panel to connect to a generator; it would run the fridge, stove and furnace with the throw of a switch if needed. As far as I know, they have never needed it, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. I like to have a b-plan almost always, it just makes me more comfortable since we all know that s*** happens. I'm not some end-of-the-world fanatacist, but there is certainly something to be said in this day and age for having some alternate plans.
  8. I don't see anything that would draw attention as too fast or out of control. The thing that I always watch when riding and from the lifts is how smooth people are. It often seems that it's the people who lack control ( usually they are WAY in the back seat) that are too fast. Yes there are people who are in control that are going faster than they should sometimes, but this is not the case in this video. I am deeply disappointed that there are people out there that feel the need to strong-arm individuals that aren't the cookie cutter norm, especially if there is no real reason for it.
  9. A young kid (8ish) got on the lift with me and said "cool slant ski" and then had a nonstop conversation with his buddy about girls being gross because they like to hug. Poor kid, I'm sure he'll learn someday.
  10. So as to only offend half of you, I ride with one earbud, volume set a level low enough to still converse on the lifts. I have been listening to a lot of The Crystal Method as of late, Legion of Boom, The two Community Service albums and the two disc Tweekend set. It is usually drowned out by wind and the occasional sonic boom, but it's always nice to have something playing when my hearing returns. If I'm not supposed to wear an Ipod while riding, is it ok for the lifties at Nakiska to wear one while they are working? With both earbuds in? I'm just saying.....
  11. "It's been a while since I snowboarded, but why are you wearing ski boots?" I told her a bit about Alpine and to watch the olympics for it. She seemed interested and then went to look for her friends who ditched her. If only I were single.....
  12. They Just passed a law in Ontario banning the hand held use of electronics. This applies to Cell (talk and text), GPS, MP3 and satellite radio. It also leaves the door open for any future devices. It carries a $500 fine, but they are only handing out warnings until February. We'll see what happens then. I think there will be someone that puts up a large fight in court shortly thereafter. There is a big push in Edmonton for companies to ban employee cell use while driving company cars, I expect to see Alberta join the club by this time next year.
  13. Anyone, anyone, Bueller? Just wondering if anyone will be out this weekend. The snow was less than great today and I think tomorrow will be even more like ice. But I'm not saying it is ice. I won't do it.
  14. But there were only about eleven people there and probably never more than four on the lift at any one time. What is that, seven minutes of evac? I'm kidding, well mostly. Besides, it's a dry cold. FYI, it was +2C in the parking lot today, how's that for don't like the weather just wait fifteen minutes. Besides, you should always carry an extra sweater when you come visit Alberta, that's the rule.
  15. Thanks Allee, I aggree that it is stunning landscape, I was just having a tough time with my point and shoot as I am still trying to figure out what it can do. I will probably take one of my better cameras and re-do the same shots, hopefully to better results. I was almost eerie, there was no one around mostly, no tracks in the few day old snow and not a single sound, other than me, of course. It reminded me of Omega man.
  16. I had an 07 GTI MKV with Revo 1s on it and it was awesome. The only problem I ever had with it was it had next to no clearance and I got high-centered once. Had to do a bunch of digging with odd things to get it back on the pavement, then I went a bought a shovel. I got tired of driving it in those kinds of conditions, that's why I changed to the FJ Cruiser. I got the Trail Teams edition that came with BF Goodrich KOs. They are very impressive for everything I have done with them so far. They make lots of noise when you do four wheel drifts on pavement though.
  17. I went that way monday after I got denied, didn't see the road but drove down to Upper Kananaskis Lake. Lots of freshies down there, did donuts in a couple of parking lots and took some mediocre pictures. Hey Allee, you could camp down there, there are lots of open spots, empty picnic tables and no lines at the showers.....
  18. You used to be able to get the shoulder bolts and bails in Ti, I have them and they don't make an F-ing bit of difference as far as I can tell. But I know they are Ti and that's cool as, well, Ti.
  19. Alas, it's true: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortress_Mountain_Resort I think "mildly adverse" is a bit of an understatement, but I think they were mad that there have been very few people thus far, pretty much every day.
  20. As far as I know, Resorts of the Canadian Rockies owns Nakiska, but I'm not sure what the purchase conditions were. I went for a drive to Fortress yesterday but there was too much snow to get close. As I understand it, the new developer has to meet environmental standards having to do with fresh/ waste water and he doesn't seem to want to spend the money right now.
  21. I got to Nakiska today and tried to take a leak before I got geared up and the lodge was locked. I went to the admin office and they said they were closed. It was too cold (-30C, big deal, wear an extra sweater) and besides, they only had 150 people yesterday (sunday) so they didn't want to "be hard on the lifts". Last time I checked, the lifts weren't made for use in the tropics.... The crappy part of it is that to be there for opening I have to leave my place at ten to eight. They didn't make the decision until the meeting at eight, then it takes about half an hour to update the website, so I was pretty much there before it was public knowledge. I should have figured something was up when the Saskatchewan Alpine team (isn't that the most ironic thing you have ever heard of) was leaving the parking lot at 9:02. It's only supposed to be -16C tomorrow and then +4C on wednesday, so they better not pull that crap again.
  22. We have a Forester that has never let us down, it has 8 1/8 inches of clearance you know ( my gf will tell you that and it's blue if you ask her anything about the car). Two weekends ago I pulled a trailer through the blizzard in Calgary with my FJ Cruiser, didn't even have to lock the diffs or the transfer case (it has a weird FTAWD thing) I have to say it is a very capable ride.
  23. I was in line the other day waiting for my pass to be scanned. There were a few people infront of me, also waiting to get scanned. (IMO this scan thing is stupid, they need the rfid system they use in europe, much more efficient) Some guy skis around the line to the scanner, gets scanned and joins the two ladies waiting for him at the load gate. I had to say something to the guy. It was a VERY slow day as there might have been 75 people on the mountain, but I told him there was a reason we were standing in line and waiting our turn. I did my best to be civil and let him know that it was unacceptable behavior, then I let him join the ladies ahead of me. He must have thought it over because at the top he came over and apologized, saying he wouldn't have appreciated someone cutting ahead of him. I hope it sticks with the guy. Also, none of the lifties said boo to the guy.
  24. I feel for you, I really do. I am enjoying the snow in Calgary, but seem to be the only person in the city doing so. I didn't buy a Blue pass this year, looks like I made the right call.
