lonbordin
On Monday (27 Nov 2017) the New York Times published this story- https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/11/27/sports/olympics/ester-ledecka-skiing-snowboarding.html They published a large picture of Ester Ledecka skiing on the front page of the sports section but on the inside she was pictured on her SG and it took up the whole page above the fold. Huge! I've uploaded the gif of the two images. Great to see such exposure!
Wolf
Wow, thanks for the post. Such skills at age 22. I wish I could board or ski at even 10% of her level. I like your alternating gif images too.

SunSurfer
And she is an equal example, with Vic Wild, of a "skier style" alpine snowboard racer. Watch her heelside turns, shoulders across the board with both arms out in front, not one flailing around in the slipstream, and her knee on the outside of the turn driving down and across the board. This is a screen capture from her winning the FIS World Championship PGS 2017 (video below). A side by side comparison of Ledecka and Kummer heelsides, look at how the knees are being driven. Kummer, the front heel is being pressured, and the rear knee well separated and at a higher angle than the front. Ledecka, knees closer together, the knee on the outside of the turn pressing down onto the edge. The differences are relatively subtle to the eye, but they represent completely distinct ways of applying edge pressure. bigwavedave
She trained with Thedo Remmelink and the SSWSC in the early season. Here is some drone footage from Copper Mt, pre-season 4 years ago. Ester's in the white suit, very fast and smooth, even at 18 years old . I think Justin Reiter is in the next shot and the woman in turquoise after that is Mimi Wiencke, who was the top US woman racer at the time. Skip to the 1 min mark if it doesn't start there. Dan
Great article, thanks for pointing it out. It is always kind of surprising to me that mainstream articles like this don't give a short explanation of what alpine snowboarding is -- does John Q Public NYT reader have any idea what snowboard PGS is?
