greetings and salutations.

all the runs have snow but not all are open yet. snow up on top of crossroads was chunky balls. once you get through it the snow was good until you reach the bottom where it was hard. obligatory photo from top. in the image where the kids located is where it was really bad.

milkrun was good which meant everyone wanted to go down it. the problem i had was there were these guys that were jumping from crossroads to milkrun at ballistic speeds. under the towers the snow is lower than snow base and has trenches from moving the guns. so... naturally ... everyone wants to jump across it.

olympic was open. terrain park too.

crowds were bad. i left after an hour.

not quite ready to try carving. will be out tomorrow morning.

good start to the season! :biggthump

flat light. snow guns. erik on hardboots. i'm not ready.

crossroads was better than yesterday. i preferred milkrun.

at top of milkrun i just buckled in when i caught a glimpse of erik going over the handle bars. the board was completely vertical and then he disappeared behind the roll in the hill. there was a mound of wet snow near the towers where he tried to carve. seemed fine afterwards.

tried to enhance the photo so you can see where he went.

nose dug into the snow.

would've made a sweet christmas card.

after buck, went up to REI. it was a mad house. there was a line of cars just trying to get out of the parking lot. i bought a Yakima Skybox but am thinking of returning it. i bought the Skybox 18 model which is plenty long for the boards but the height exceeds my garage by about 4 inches. when i got home i saw there is a shorter profile model that is out of stock :angryfire:angryfire:angryfire. i dunno. it does present a challenge when trying to retrieve boards. i would have to climb up on the car to retrieve the board.

sunny morning. not too crowded.

top part of milkrun was hard cord. i skidded through it to get the softer stuff. crossroads was good. the backside was not great.

i should've been on plates.

Buck Hill Pro Tip

Do not ride the chairlift when snow guns are aimed at the chair.

the TL;DR version... both erik, another skier, and myself fell down while trying to disembark from the chair. snow guns were aimed up towards the chair so we were glazed with ice. the ice on the bottom of the boards gripped the snow. would've been funny on youtube.

flat light. fog. very warm... above freezing. started to sweat.

soft but grippy cord! :biggthump:biggthump:biggthump

rollers on crossroads. i avoided it. i could not see the rollers but saw from the chair that two skiers had found them. stayed on milkrun, warners and that backside run behind milkrun.

not very crowded for saturday.

purchased a Thule snowboard rack. just mounted it and placed my board on it. the factory crossbars are at spaced such that the bindings get in the way of the overhead clamp. i had to move the board backwards so that the bindings clear the rack. it looks weird.

Bob, if you are transporting your boards on an open roof rack make sure the road grime does not sit on them for long. The anti-ice solution they use now can really do a number on the aluminum parts not to mention the edges......

just as i pulled into the lot it started to drizzle. almost drove back home.

first ride up the chair. could not see through the beads of water on my goggles. without goggles i still couldn't see the rollers.

took backside run down. i was going to take it back to the parking lot. while going i could at least make out the trail. decided to stay longer. rode down that most of my stay. i was playing around with the BTS and think i messed up mine. the bottom adjustment nut seems to be stripped. might have to order a new set.

at some point the drizzle started to clear and it almost sleeting. water wasn't beading on my goggles as much. i could see better. took runs down skiers left of milkrun.

One and done. Got there at 8:45 AM, left at 9:00 AM.

Too soft. Much like Christmas Eve.

Ski teams were out on Milkrun and Crossroads.

Took backside down. Edges are hitting ice. Soft stuff on top. Flat light.

Didn't even bother to try skiing. Maybe if i get really bored I might go back out.

Morning

last night it snowed. not sure how much. maybe 4-5 inches? decided to ski instead of boarding.

got there at 8:45 AM. the ski clinic had all ready destroyed the runs. :AR15firin i'm sure many people anticipated "freshies" upon arrival only to be disappointed. the bottom of milkrun was wrecked.

backside runs were good; warners and redtail ridge (?). on warners, skiers left below the chute had enough snow for the ski tip to disappear. kinda cool.

tried skiing crossroads. it was too bumpy for me. no control whatsoever.

ran into randy and patty. we did runs on warners. at some point on the chairlift we spotted the groomer making runs on milkrun. we went over there and waited about 10 minutes before the ski patrol would let us on the run. we had people queuing up bedind us for this much anticipated event.

Went riding in the morning. Temp overnight had reached single digits. Thee snow had set up good... But the ski clinics chewed up the runs again. Crossroads was bumpy. The top snow was like rock salt. Not fun for carving. They rev roomed milk run so it was too soft. Spent most time riding the back runs.

The number of skiers to snowboarders was like 50:1. Very crowded but I stayed till noon.

Late on the evening went back out again. My brother picked up new short board skis with releasable bindings. Again it was crowded. The lift lines were really long. We spent more time on the new lift because the lines were slightly shorter and less budding in line from 40-something self entitled douche bags on skis that ski all the way to the front.

It was a long night. Another four hours of riding. Snow was same as morning.

Was out tonight in the biggest blizzard on the year, they had every snow machine they have making snow.  Had to clear my goggles off every other run from all the snow/frost build up.    Crossroads was a little choppy so I spent my first night on Warner's Way.   Great nice semi firm snow that you could edge into and it was super smooth all the way down.  Rode hard for the hour and a half until close.

i was out yesterday at around 11am. erik had already carved it up. crossroads was fast and bumpy.  top snow was loose like rock salt in some places. warners and back side runs were decent.

left after an hour... tired and had a headache coming on.

good to hear they made snow.

going to buck this morning. super cold... its -6F right now. could be in for very interesting conditions. probably be dead too.

Morning

buck turned on snow guns last night when the temp dropped to -6F.

arrived early at buck. i expected to see milkrun raped by ski clinics. instead, it was groomed and no gates. the clinic was on olympic.

the new snow was stiff and held up well:

  • crossroads: excellent. i had fun crossing over from milkrun and making tight surfy turns on the rollers.
  • milkrun: excellent except for the airbag.
  • warners: has a dead whale laying in the middle of the run. serious huge cache of snow.
  • red tail: disappointing. had less than ideal grooming.

erik and i practically had the hill to ourselves. he'd go on milkrun while i'd go down crossroads and vice versa. took two breaks. it was brutally cold. if you had genital warts, you could just burn them off while riding the icy cold chair... or something like that.

some guy was taking pictures on milkrun so we stayed until the photographer packed up which was around 1pm.

rode donek first couple runs. switched to coiler. i seem to have more scallops on the donek.

New Years Eve Morning

cold morning. crossroads and milkrun all day.

started out with rossi. the cord was hard and fast. i had issues with the board holding an edge especially on toe-side. think they need to be sharpened. got frustrated. i switched over to coiler and was more goodly. yep... goodly indeed.

the official buck hill photographer took some pictures of us regulars (thanks dave!). in the chalet erik showed me one of the pictures of me and suggested what i could do differently for a fully laid out carve on toe-side. went back out and focused on bringing the outside hand around to the front and getting head lower. seemed to work. not sure how it looked from the chair. if only i could do the same on heel-side.

erik and i took a couple breaks. around the 12:30~1pm the snow was really really REALLY good! it seemed to improve throughout the day. wish i could've stayed longer but the cold was hurting my feet.

hope everyone gets out New Years day and not this...  :barf:

1/3/15, happy New Years! I finally made it out on the board. I only made seven runs, and I was winded after each one. I really need to get off the heart rate meds... 4 runs were in gates, that seemed to go alright. The snow was really good, but the wind was blowing it all away, it was getting icy at the top of milk run.

New boots, I dunno about the UPZs yet, they feel flimsy laterly at the top. Could be a challenge with the high binding angles I run. They aren't that wide, I'd say they're normal width in the toes, skinny at the arch and heel. Tall in the toes. My feet are like a 24.9 and the 24.5 liner was way to small. I got a pair of the stiffest intuition heat moldable liners I couldn't ride with the stock liners. I think I need to try some new insoles, the bottom of my feet were hurting.

Good to hear you got out but go easy on yourself, Randy.

COLD , HARD and STIFF

The conditions of the day, not a snowboard porn movie title. Cold air, very hard snow--good carving, just that any bumps bounced you around, and stiff--anything that needed to flex--board, boots, body.

Rode with Eric and Karl, partial sun, had the place to ourselves. I stayed til about noon, sun came out after you guys left. Karl was looking really smooth on his new Nirvana. It felt like it took more energy to ride today, I'm pretty tired.

Another great night on Crossroads.  Was some great "hero" snow tonight.  Got there around 5 and all the high school racers were finishing up.   Nice and smooth, and got a chance to get out the big stick.  By the end of the night it was pretty choppy but I think most of it was from trenches.  Left after the instructors started there PSIA training, it was like ants on an ant mound.
