Crowds - ya. I heard there were 9 busloads of students there. When I pulled in at 9AM, the parking lot was already half full.

By 1:00PM, the runs were really choppy. I was getting thrown around pretty good. Still, Gabe and Rob and Kevin (?) were still carving smooth turns. Those guys can ride. I packed it in a 2:00.

We need one of our private club friends to invite us to Osler or Alpine for an Ontario Expression Session.

It is too bad I don't live in Ontario anymore, I patrolled at Beaver Valley and could sign in guests. It was a great carving hill, good grooming and no crowds.

When I next see PMWizard I will talk to him about organizing some kind of session at Osler. Between us we would be able to sign in 12. I may be able to get another member to help with sign-ins as well so we could likely get a session with about 15 going.

One needs to choose weekend days carefully. Ski race days can be somewhat crowded with a certain amount of terrain out of use and tons of families with their racers on the properties. If we were to do it on a weekend day, it would be best on a Sunday because many members only ski/ride until about noon after which the crowds are light. Lunch hour from 11:30 - 1-00 is quite light for traffic as well. So, basically, Sunday after 11:30 is a great time.

Tickets are $52. Because of club rules, a member has to be on hand when the guest ticket is sold or alternatively, the member can purchase the ticket and leave it for pick-up. Either way, this becomes a bit of a logistical issue so we will need to figure a way to make this happen.

Snow conditions at Osler yesterday were quite good considering the recent weather. There is a very tough and resilient base at the moment but there is only mild weather in the forecast at the moment so the prognosis is not good. I would look to early February to do something. Hopefully, the weather will lay down more real snow before then. Can't be mid-Feb as I am in CO for SES ;-).

John, where are you? Haven't seen you at the club or seen you post in the past couple of weeks. You away somewhere? We need to get together on this.

Henry:

Thanks for getting some video - didn't even know you were taking it.

Let's try to get ourselves oreganized, so we can pick which day on the weekend to ride.

It was great to see everyone - nice core group of 5-6 of us on Saturday, and I know there are at least 5-6 more.

Arthur, Ray and Paul - are you still out there????? Dave Morgan too

I suggest that we post on thursday, which day everyone plans to go, depending on weather. It is great to ride with all of you guys - gets everyone pushing it.

Henry, what bindings are you riding - I am Cateks, so if you want to take the Madd for a spin - just ask.

All the best,

Rob

Rob:

I'm not kidding you when I say you looked way smoother on the Coiler. Maybe the longer length was able to absorb the bumps better.

On my Prior, I have step-in TD2s. On my Volkl, I have regular bails. I use the same boots for both. Mondo point 27.5. I also have a pair of brand new Cateks waiting to go on the Coiler that Bruce will get to real soon now (no complaints. I knew about the backlog when I ordered).

I might take you up on the offer but actually prefer to try out someone's Coiler Race Carve or Free Carve. I ordered a Coiler without having ever ridden one. A little preview demo ride might be nice.

My only problem might be binding angles. I ride 47/42 right now since the Prior is pretty wide.

See you on the slopes.

Henry

BTW, I can email you the larger copy of the video. I did it with my digital camera so it's only VGA quality, not broadcast.

Hey Chris,

I'm around, but I've only made three outings at the club so far. I didn't even get up there this weekend - this d**n cold has nailed me, so I was mostly flat on my back all weekend. But I figured one of us would have to bite on the club bait!

It would be a lot better if we could set up a Friday. Then we could sign in a group, and have a lot more hill to ourselves. I know it's hard for everyone to get away on a weekday, but the Saturdays can be crowded, especially if there is a race event using up Slalom or Sleigh Ride. I looked at the club schedule, and the next couple of Fridays "seem" to be open if we keep it under 20 riders.

BTW you have to get used to looking for my new helmet (one of the Burton motocross looking ones covered in dino teeth!).

Thanks for posting the video. On the video technical end of things. What are you using to output your video and what sort of compression settings do you use. I have been outputing video of my infant son with Adobe Premier but the files have been very large.

Thanks,

alan

Let's take a census on this thing: who is for a Friday (lots of vacant hill but you have to call in sick)? Who is for a Sunday (legal day off but a little more traffic)? For those of you who have not been to Osler, you have to understand that a weekend day at Osler is a little like a week day at MSLM or Blue in terms of crowds. This is especially true on Sundays when the tow lines at lunch hour can fall into the single digits. There is a ton of terrain that can be great and there aren't many beginner skiers on the hill. The problem is more that the skiers are going so fast that you're likely to be mowed down from behind during a transition (yes, I was even hit by a ski patroller overtaking me near the edge of a run!).

I have to admit, I am working 6 days a week right now and a Friday could be difficult. But that's just my fundamentally selfish nature talking.

gawdzira:

I used a Fuji digital still cam in video mode. It captures acceptable video in VGA resolution. I then loaded into iMovie on a Mac and saved it out at 320x240 res. I just used the default settings.

I've played with Premiere and found it way too complicated. iMovie does everything I need. On the Windows platform, Microsoft's Movie Maker 2 is actually pretty good as well.
