This should be posted in the classifieds under "Read this before selling boots" to avoid stupid problems with boot sizing. YYZCanuck put the Deeluxe one together, and I'm sure enough people have UPZs, Burton Fires/Winds and Heads to fill out most of the sizes.

Anyone willing to take the 30 seconds to confirm sole length for a known size?

The real more useful dimension is the total shell length of 309 mm

For riding purposes, yes. However, if I understand correctly, this thread is supposed to provide buyers/sellers of used boots with a means to identify the boot size. For that, a number stamped on the outside of the boot, as the sole length usually is, might be better.

That was the intent, because it's apparently quite difficult to look inside a boot and correctly identify the only number that isn't a range.

Are all the shells under the UPZ name the same? I was under the impression none of the molds were different, and that only the UPS shells were different (Alpina etc)

It is already screwed up in the top table.

call me dumb if you want, I just don't see the sole length info being useful for boot fit.

That is unless you're talking about how the boot fits your binding

your feet fit inside the dang things, right :confused:

my new MP28 Head boots have a considerably shorter sole, but slightly more interior room then my old MP28 Reactors :cool:

Often boots do not have the MP easliy visible.

Often boots have several conflicting size indicators visible.

One indicator consistantly visible on boots is the sole length.

By making a list that cross references sole length with MP size (grouped by mfg and perhaps model) it might be easy to determine the MP of a boot when all you can find is the sole length. (Sorry, long sentence... hope you could follow)

This will work if there is a consistant relationship between sole length and MP within a given manufacturer and model. However, what might occur is a couple of MP sizes could share a common outer mold size resulting in both having the same sole length, but this does not appear to be the case.

Someone else said their 25s have that sole length..Didn't occur to me the info didn't mesh with the roughly 12mm increase in size, something to keep in mind..

Sorry, correct now. It's interesting the sole lengths of UPZs are in some cases longer than either Raichle shell.

Thanks for summing it up BJ..Luckily there's only 4 shells readily available, so there isn't much info to chart.

ah, the inter-relationship of shell length within a given manufacture... yes, I see. this matrix won't help at all when trying to cross compare boots between manufactures

nice nugget of expainitory information once I got past your spiteful BS ;)

anyway, while such a matrix may help, the acuracy, let alone the successful use of it, is totally dependant upon the measurements taken by the folks submitting data AND the seller of a pair of boots in question

point being, it helps that the sole length tends jump about 7-10mm between mondo points but when measuring sole length to the millimeter, what if your guy is checking worn sole pads? and is the guy taking the measurement using a quality set of metric calipiers or a cheap wooden ruler hoping to get somewhere close? is it that hard to explain how to remove the liner and where to look in the shell?

The whole reason for this is due to lazy sellers not wanting to pull the liners to determine exactly what size the lower shell is. Seeing a pair of boots that's listed as 27.0 - 29.5 (as molded in the upper shell piece) is completely useless to a buyer, but many sellers don't understand this as they're just selling something they don't care about.

If I'm looking for a size 27 UPZ, and the seller has a pair that has "312 mm" on the side, then using the above table I now know that these boots won't help me. It's not used for anything else.

Why is there opposition to this? It can only help sellers and buyers.

btw, I was never in opposition, was just wondering what's the deal.

I also never noticed a sole length number molded on the outside on my boots either. guess I can check to night and if it's there, let you know what it says on my new mp28 HSP and old Reactors :cool:

I've established that when I noticed that the engraved number on my M26 Dalbello CRX (same as Head Stratos) is bigger by ~10mm then om M26 Suzuka, while the bail clip-in length of Dalbello is actually ~2mm less!

As long as we do KC's table properly, it will be a great cross-check tool for the buyers/sellers.

I'll post the numbers for 2 sizes of Dalbellos, later.

I'm sure the UPZ measurements are with the DIN blocks, because the snowboard length doesn't really matter.

As far as the measurements in general, it's all standardized, DIN is the German Institute of Standards or something like that. What is NOT standard is the distance from toebox to the end of the sole, likewise for the heel. This is why some ski bindings appear to fit very loosely even when adjusted to the correct length.

My guess is you'll find the longest extents of the boot to reflect the molded number.

so, I looked at my old Burton Reactors first = No sole length numbers molded into the side of the shell :confused:

Nope. the only thing molded into the side of the shells is then cant index for the cuffs and "made-in-austria"

moving on to my new Head Stratos Pros = No sole length number molded into the side of the shells. In fact No markings, Nothing, is molded into the sides of the shell

they do have a little chart written on them that looks to be in paint that says :

Model = Stratos Pro

Control Factor = 6

Liner Type = Contour Fit Pro

Cuff Type = Polyester - S 56

Shell Type = Polyester - S 56

Then there is a sticker that says :

Mondo = 28.5

USA = 10-1/2

Euro = 44

UK = 9-1/2

Inside the shell says:

Patriot 285

The liners say:

thermo inner

Mondo 28.0

Euro 9

US 10

That's a critical piece of information. Also explains why we only have UPZ numbers so far!

I've got UPZ RSV (red) MP27, sole 299mm and a scrap pair of same which I was told were MP26, sole 287mm. This seems to line up with what is posted so far. I cannot seem to find any sort of MP marking anywhere inside or outside either foot section. The MP27 foot section has internal marking 8-7L The scrap foot section has 5,5 - 6,5L (both are left boots).
