Whistler over the Olympics

Recommended Posts

I'm off the 17th. I think I've managed to convince my family to head up for a day. -Gord

HI GTANNER

since the 17th is the best day for you, i’ll come up on the same day. it’s unlikely any others from the vancouver crew will be up as we already made plans to visit other out of town ski hills during the olympic weekends.

That'd be cool. PM me your cell and I'll send you mine ... Bartron and I are booked on the bus and ready to rock ...

HI ALLEE

what bus line did you and BARTRON book with? hope you knew that greyhound gives a discount of about 30 percent if you book at least 4 days in advance.

please post instructions on how to meet up. if you need to, you can email BLUEB and he’ll give you my number and email address as my bomberonline email is disabled.

let’s hope for good carving conditions on the 17th.

Greyhound was the cheapest by a long shot. Plus, one of my BFF's is working the mens alpine course at Whistler, they race on the 13th so we are meeting for bevvies afterwards - and Greyhound was the only option that would allow me to stay in the village until 9.30. All the rest come back to Van after the lifts close.

We're on the 8.30 bus out of Van, which gets into Whistler at 10.30. So if someone can suggest a coffee shop close to the lifts to meet at around 10.45, that would be sweet. I'll grab cell #'s too, just in case we get delayed.

Hey guys, I'll be riding at Whistler on Feb 13 (Sat), Feb 17 (Wed) and probably Feb 19 (Fri) over the Olympics. If anyone's around and wants to brave the circus to get up there, let me know...

I will be heading up to Vancouver from Park City, UT. Thinking of bringing the board(s) and/or skis and making a trip up to Whistler for a day or two. Right now looking at getting a lift ticket for Friday, Feb 19th. Would ski/ride for a bit, then make my way over to the Super-G race course and watch some of the action from slope-side, and then catch a couple more runs afterward.

It would be nice to have someone to ride with, especially if they know the mountain and the better runs that get groomed. I have been to Whistler before, but it's probably been 15 years ago!

Please drop me a line if you will be on the mountain on Fri, Feb 19th or Sat, Feb 20th. I can be reached at skate [at] skatesite (dot) com. And my cell phone is [435) 729...0101.

Thanks.

hi SKATE

with all the olympic closures (most of the newer lifts and runs) there are probably less runs open now than 15 years ago so whistler will probably be exactly as you remembered it lol.

try contacting ALLEE as she is contemplating riding on the 19th. unfortunately i have to be back in the city on the 18th and 19th but i will be back up there on Saturday the 20th. i noticed in your profile that you ride burton bales and i always make an extra effort to ride with a fellow burton alpine product user.

btw i have a ticket to watch the women’s gs on the 24th so will only be riding early in the morning or late in the afternoon that day. so if you or any others on this thread want to make a few turns that day then let me know as i plan to be on my skis that day otherwise i will bring my snowboard.

btw i just emailed you my email address and phone number.

hope to see you on feb 20th. even better if you can rearrange your schedule to join us on the 17th (at least 4 riders confirmed per the above posts.)

later

doug

p.s. it is legal to skateboard on vancouver streets!

Actually I'll be bringing the Burton Speed with the old Burton RacePlates on it!

Sounds like you will be watching the Women's GS from the spectator area at the bottom of Creekside on the 24th. I might be up for heading up again that morning... and for riding an afternoon session. I'm guessing Whistler has half-day lift tickets...

okay. i'll bring one of my burtons also. maybe an ultraprime to piss off TRAILERTRASH lol.

i just replied to your email so you should find most of your questions answered there.

and yes, whistler does have half day tickets.

i'm going to watch MICHAEL BUBLE singing up at grouse mountain at a 4 am taping for the TODAY SHOW so i will be hitting the sack soon. also there should be some olympic skiers being interviewed on the show--should be interesting. if you see a funny looking little guy jumping in front of the TODAY SHOW cameras and then being escorted off by security--that will be me.

touch base with you again after i see what conditions are ACTUALLY like when i return from whistler on the 17th.

So jealous! I'm all packed and done, and now just have to wait for the ride to pick me up at 6.30am - Olympics baby! Woo-hoo!!

for any lurking hardbooters who want to join us, the meeting place per ALLEE's email is :

"...at the trail map, next to the information kiosk/ticket booth next to the Blackcomb (EXCALIBUR) gondola........at 11am..."

gonna hit the sack--gotta get up early tomorrow as the forecast calls for hero groomed.

I'm up in Whistler for the night. Will be on the mountain first thing in the am. Will be riding the hard boots, but will have to be on the Whistler side of things for the Men's Super-G which starts at 11:30.

I want to catch Ligety and Bode, and barring any delays or major crashes, they should be finished up by noon, or 12:30 or so.

Any chance we can get a later meeting spot higher up the mountain?

Also, text me at [435) 729 .- 0101. I'd love to catch up and ride a bit.

hi CARVINGSCOOBY

the bad news: i lost my cellphone when riding with ALLEE and IAN. unfortunately, i didn’t get a chance to take any pictures of them riding before i lost the phone.

the good news: when i got home there was a message on my landline that my cellphone was found and turned into the lost and found in whistler. i called back and said i would pick it up on feb. 20th when i meet up with SKATE for a couple of runs.

when i was uploading the gondola in the morning before ALLEE and IAN arrived some guy jumped in at the last minute. it was DAVID POISSON the olympian who finished in 7th place in the DH going up early in the morning to practice for his upcoming super-G race. very nice person and was happy to answer questions on ski racing on the long gondola ride up. he also agreed to let me take his pic on my cellphone and post it on bomberonline. i’ll post the pic when i get my cellphone back on Saturday as ALLEE wanted to see the pic too.

hi SKATE

as you can tell from the previous post i won’t have my cellphone until about midmorning tomorrow when i get it back from the lost and found in whistler. therefore, i will call you from my land line tonight in case you have any updates i should be aware of.

on feb. 20th the women’s super-G will be happening so a later meeting time higher up on WHISTLER makes sense. how about the top of the EMERALD CHAIR (the first chair on the left as you exit the PEAK 2 PEAK gondola coming over from the blackcomb side?) i assume you will be uploading BLACKCOMB and then crossing over to WHISTLER on the PEAK 2 PEAK to avoid the olympic closures and delays trying to upload from the whistler side. 10 am sound good to you? if it’s too early then i’ll just keep riding up and down the EMERALD CHAIR until you come and get me. the runs serviced by the EMERALD CHAIR appear to be the best remaining alpine snowboarding terrain since all the really good runs are closed off for warmup runs by the olympic racers.

if you have no objection i nominate the top of EMERALD CHAIR as the automatic reuniting point in case we get separated. i want to avoid cellphone calls as much as possible as i wear an over-the-ears helmet--in order to use my phone i have to completely remove my helmet. that’s after i remove my cumbersome fingerless gloves in order to remove my helmet in the first place! it’s a ten minute ORDEAL. the vancouver crew used to give me endless grief for leaving my cellphone in my car when i ride with them until they saw my helmet and glove doffing routine just to answer a simple phonecall on the chairlift. they’ve never bugged me ever since lol.

the only change to look out for is i will be riding a prior flc instead of one of my burtons as someone wants to check out my uniquely cambered flc board. also i will have to leave a bit earlier as i want to get to PRIOR SNOWBOARDS before it closes.

see you tomorrow at 10am at the top of EMERALD CHAIR.

doug

p.s. the easiest way to recognize me is to look for my uniquely DUCT TAPED gloves.

p.p.s. i won't bother riding on the 24th as i just found out a few days ago that the olympic network bus leaves about 2 hours after the event finishes--while in the morning the drop off point is a long uphill hike to the spectator area! also you can't bring skiis or snowboards on the olympic network bus either--should have checked earlier. sorry.

I totally want to see that pic. I had an Olympic moment today too - I swapped Olympic pins on the SeaBus with a lovely young lady who turned out to be Maxime Dufour-Lapointe, world cup moguls skier. She was on her way to meet her sister Chloe, who represented Canada in such fine style last weekend. Pretty cool!

hi SKATE

i didn't have time to check my email before heading up on the 20th so didn't find out about your injured back until after i got home from whistler. it was fun snowboarding around the emerald chair for a couple of hours before i figured out you wouldn't be able to make it. hope you have a speedy recovery.

anyway i had a good day of snowboarding as i met 2 other hardbooters. a CZECH guy on a swoard and a GERMAN guy on an F2 speedster. however the day was marred by the teenage jibber who lost control sliding into the liftline and hit my board (PRIOR flc.) the top sheet is lifted and there's a further hairline crack about 3 or 4 mm in from the edge. the little turd didn't even apologize. i was going to rip his head off but then a temporary state of sanity prevailed at the last moment so i didn't do it.

i later stopped by PRIOR SNOWBOARDS and asked GUS if i could just epoxy it and then clamp it down. he seem to think it was a fairly simple fix. i guess i'll have to ask BLUEB to help me with the repair.

here's a pic of my damaged flc where i inserted a postcard in the lifted section of the topsheet:

Hi guys, nice to hear you are riding (and getting hammered by youngsters :boxing_sm ) :)

Did you watch the PGS on Cypress? It was foggy and pretty bad but I almost browned my pants laughing as the Russian guy in the small final started little too early and crushed in to that opening gate :smashfrea

I was just riding today in Norefjell here in Norway, I can post one link here with just a few pictures so you know how it looks like here...

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2033614&id=1107392865&l=2ca46ae254

By the way, can you explain me what it means to have Dual radius side cut as on the new FLC, there is like 14/16, I don't really know what to imagine under that... Thanks

Have a great riding,

Cheers, Ondrej
