Dan
Any thoughts? I have a helmet that's about 5 years old; never been in a serious collision (i.e., rock, tree or rail), but it's definitely smacked the snow a bunch of times. Last time I tossed a bike helmet, I cracked the shell with a hammer and threw it out...any better ideas for this one?

Sinecure
Turn it into a planter. Or put it away somewhere. Someday it will look cool to hang that ancient thing on the wall and wonder how we could have thought that it was sufficient protection or in any way high tech. martyagt4
Meh, I cut mine in half with a band-saw. Just for fun.
skategoat
Burying it is a great idea. It will eventually break down and the materials are relatively inert. And who knows, some day, an archeologist might dig it up and put it in a museum.

Dave ESPI
Play it Again Sports. Give it to someone who needs gear. There is nothing wrong with it. Its just not "brand new" what are your weird? .
Dan
what are your weird? . Yeah, I have been told that before. Not sure how that applies to this issue though. Helmets are supposed to have a lifespan around 5 years. Even without major impacts the shell and padding degrade and provide less protection over time, so selling them or giving them away isn't really a good option. Dave ESPI
5 years? Ive never ever heard that before. Where is that information at ? I'd be curious to know about that because I have various helmets that are anywhere from 1 to 10 years old and some the 10 year old ones are in better condition than the new "junk" that is on the market. Randy T.
Do you have a dummy downhill at a resort near you? You could always use it for that. Some of the entries at the event here end up burning in the pit at the bottom.

tex1230
yep - I replace motorcycle helmets every 4 years or 1 drop... Probably a good idea to do the same with snow helmets.
Dave ESPI
Interesting. Thanks Dan. My helmets are all ASTM rated. Unless I se any major changes in them with material degredation, or excessive "close encounters of the hard kind" I'm just going to wear what I have till I die from lack of trying. Truth be told, in 2002 I had a fairly good race accident and a helmet split completely in half when I slammed a rock at the side of the trail when I caught a gate post and then rolled onto my downhill edge in a wobley transition and flew some 10 feet before making a 30mph "contact" with said rock and race fencing. I lost involuntary body functions (peed my pants crapped my shorts) for a few seconds, and a hell of a concussion, but I was "alive" and OK enough to walk/ board down to the first aid hut. I'm a firm believer in helmets (even before that incident) and am glad to see more and more people riding with them especialy here in the Boilerplate Northeast. Midwest soft snow is one thing, but Ice.... might as well be a rock or pavement, because the impact is the same.

bigdyno
Out of curiosity I e-mailed Shoei to see what they suggested since I figured they would have this question posed to them on a regular basis. Here is their answer, I **** you not: "I'm not sure about environmentally friendly, but we destroy the helmets and throw them away. If a consumer is going to do it themselves, we suggest that you cut the chin straps off and pour a small amount of gas on the inside of the helmet to destroy the EPS liner to make sure the helmet is never used again. " Anyone got a smoke I can bum, I have some helmets to dispose of.............
