  7. Glad you're OK, Mario! Herewith some stats (that, of course, lump all snowboarding injuries together.) http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/03/31/with-the-thrills-come-extreme-risks/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 BB
  8. At 1:38 in your Rincon video there's a rider on a pintail longboard who rides the point break with perfect poise and grace. Great use of the drone, too. Probably has taken lots of practice. Re snowboarding and drones, I predict The Next Great Carve Video will show up on Bomber, probably this season, incorporating drone (maybe GoPro) footage. The drone and extreme carving are made for each other... Mahalo BB

  10. Wooly worm says Possum Pouch in for a cold one. ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- The word from a woolly worm named Lickety Split is that western North Carolina should break out the winter coats and invest in snow shovels. Lickety Split beat seven other worms Saturday in the finals at the 35th annual Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk. The victory meant the worm would be the official forecaster for the upcoming winter. "It's going to be cold and snowy and a few other things," said Roy Kreger, known as Mr. Woolly Worm. (MORE: NOAA Winter Outlook Complicated by El Nino) The caterpillars have black and brown bands, with one color sometimes dominating the other. Folklore says black is associated with snowy weather, while brown is an indicator of mild conditions. Former N.C. State all-American basketball player Tom Burleson read the rings on Lickety Split. The bands called for snow and below average temperatures for the first five weeks of winter. The next six weeks will be average to below normal, with unusual cold in the 12th week and more snow predicted for the final week, according to Burleson's observation. "If you own a ski resort and you're a member of the Chamber of Commerce, that's a good prediction," Kreger said. "You ask my wife and she's ready to go south." (PHOTOS: Winter's Iconic Images) Kreger said festival winners and their predictions have an 84.5 percent accuracy rate. Bonzer !! BB
  11. Now Screening | The King of Modern Longboarding Looks Back Culture By ALEX FRENCH October 3, 2013, 4:21 pm Comment (A trailer for "Ductumentary" video can be found at http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/03/now-screening-the-king-of-modern-longboarding-looks-back/?hpw) The surf legend Joel Tudor has appeared in more than 100 surf films, but “The Ductumentary,” a documentary short presented by Van’s that will have its premiere on Monday, is the first one he’s been involved with making. It’s a portrait of the Duct Tape Invitational Series, an unorthodox longboarding contest that Tudor, the two-time longboarding world champ, started in 2010 as an antidote to the Association of Professional Surfing’s longboard competition circuit. At 25 minutes, the documentary is equal parts surfer porn and examination of Tudor’s roots and impact on the sport. Nolan HallJoel Tudor The 37-year-old San Diego native is almost single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of longboarding. The surf historian Matt Warshaw has described him as “the Raphael of the longboard renaissance.” In the late ’80s, when all of Tudor’s friends were trying to ride the ultrathin tri-fin boards that were all the rage then, he began exclusively riding longboards, which had fallen out of fashion, perceived by most as clunky, primitive relics. “That whole mentality of ‘longboarding’s not cool’ is something I’ve been hearing my whole life,” he said. “It made me want to do it more. I was never one that wanted to conform.” It wasn’t just his taste in boards that was different. He was also fascinated with moves that were popular in the ’50s and ’60s: drop-knee turns and five-second nose rides. “It’s not just how much you can do on a wave, or how crazy you can get,” he has said. “It’s also, How much cleaner can you make it? How much more beauty and style can you put into it?” He conceived the Duct Tape Invitational to recapture that ethos and hang onto it. “Some kind of rebirth was needed to keep the vibe alive, otherwise it was going to die off like it did before,” Tudor said. Things have certainly changed, however, since the days when Tudor was the only kid on the beach with a longboard, footage of which, shot by his mom, appears in “The Ductumentary.” “I went to Australia in 1992 before longboarding came back,” Tudor remembered, “and drove all over the country and surfed alone at these incredible spots because the shortboarders didn’t want to deal with it. I go back now and it’s packed.” “The Ductumentary” will have its premiere on Oct. 7 at offthewall.tv.
  12. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=9570568 This man has, inarguably, introduced more people to the sensation of wave carving than any other surfer in history. Genius, inventor of surf craft large and small, accomplished musician, and all-around nice guy!! Mahalo, Sir !! BB :biggthump
  13. a terrific book about our country's evolution in relation to its forests and the products they've enabled. I seldom read non-fiction, but American Canopy is a must-read for those who're interested in the history and ethics of our use of trees. What People Are Saying David Oshinsky “A beautifully written, devilishly original piece of work.” Business Week "An even-handed and comprehensive history that could not be more relevant...The woods, Rutkow’s history reminds us again and again, are essential to our humanity." San Diego Union-Tribune “Rutkow has cut through America’s use and love of trees to reveal the rings of our nation’s history and the people who have helped shape it.” BB

  18. OK, so how long do you think Blair Conklin has been tubed by this nightmare? The true question, methinks, is how long he'll be in traction after Ma Ocean spits him out of her warm amniotic fluid into a decidedly less welcoming and more abrasive world ... (!) Tallyho!! BB
  19. and there are those who truly 'Rage Against the Storm'. Most of these riders seem to belong to the latter group. No matter how cold the water, how grueling the paddle, how steep the drop, how unlikely a safe outcome, these brutes are gonna go!! Breathtaking!! Salutes all around!! BB
  20. The storm/wave lover in me hopes the scientists are right. Millions will, quite understandably, hope they're wrong... print friendly NC State researchers: 2013 to have active hurricane season By Chris Lusuriello, WRAL weather intern Posted: 4:09 p.m. yesterday Updated: 4:13 p.m. yesterday Top researchers at N.C. State have concluded that the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, is bound to have an active hurricane season. The data below is what researchers Dr. Lian Xie, Dr. Montserrat Fuentes, Dr. Dorit Hammerling and Bin Liu have found after extensive research involving both climatic and statistical indices. ENTIRE ATLANTIC BASIN PREDICTED AVERAGE NAMED STORMS 13-17 10.8 HURRICANES 7-10 6.3 MAJOR HURRICANES 3-6 2.7 CARIBBEAN SEA PREDICTED AVERAGE NAMED STORMS 3-6 2.6 HURRICANES 2-3 1.4 MAJOR HURRICANES 1-2 0.7 GULF OF MEXICO PREDICTED AVERAGE NAMED STORMS 3-5 3.1 HURRICANES 1-2 1.6 MAJOR HURRICANES 0-1 0.7 With hurricane season (June 1-Nov. 30) approaching, top researchers from top meteorological universities are coming out with their 2013 tropical outlooks. Different researchers have different methodologies as to how they develop their forecasts and statistical models. What Dr. Lian Xie’s team has discovered over the past 12 years is that, by using the “Lasso methodology,” they’ve been able to come up with fairly accurate predictions regarding the tropical season in the Atlantic Basin (which includes the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico). Lasso methodology allows for variable selection when correlation occurs among prediction models. By splitting up climatic models for different regions and different categories of storms, it’s advantageous because it’s easy to interpret. Examples of climatic models used by Dr. Xie’s team include the Atlantic Meridional Mode, Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation, both the Tropical North and Tropical South Atlantic models, among many, many others. The models used help to show past years of hurricane position and intensity, along with sea-surface temperatures and past weather patterns. By also using re-forecasting analysis, the research time is able to evaluate the prediction accuracy for different regions when using the Lasso methodology. What they found is that prediction skill is best in the North Atlantic Basin, intermediate in the Caribbean Sea, and least effective in the Gulf of Mexico. Lastly, by using a 95 percent confidence interval, the research team has effectively found a range for the number of certain storms to affect the Atlantic Basin.
