  1. Body armor and full face helmets definately help your chances of walking away, but I've gotten concussions while wearing helmets and brusies while wearing body armor. Psychologically, I feel more indestructible with the added protection, so I am more inclined to go for it, which is a key factor in winning BX or mastering anything new. But I'd trade in all my body armor for health insurance!
  2. Pro athletes (or anyone zoned in on performance) use visualization to improve. That's nothing new.
  3. "Does ASC own anything besides the canyons now? (rumor has it that's for sale too)" I'm wondering the same thing, too. ASC sold Steamboat to Intratheft this spring. Is this like a ski corporation garage sale?
  4. Has he ever even snowboarded? Those huge hits in pro BX courses have nothing in common with speed skating. Got to give him credit for being ballsy.
  5. I rode the Basin last Thursday and it was sweet! Top to bottom.
  6. It's dumping up here in the mountains ... and i was thinking about taking my snow tires off yesterday. HA! Berthoud Pass will rock tomorrow morning. :)
  7. We had a great winter for snowfall, but every year, it melts sooner. It's almost dry enough up here to mtn. bike! You should leave your equipment at home and just explore Colorado and Utah. But if you absolutely need to ride, Berthoud Pass will still have snow. You'd have to hit it just right (when it's soft but not dripping wet), and it would be more survival riding than carving, but ... it's free and the views up there are outstanding.
  8. Arapahoe Basin (an hour from denver) is open until June 3. They have a good base.
  9. I was at Winter Park on closing day . . . I think. I did the Spring Splash, and there was a big kicker before the pond. I compressed on the kicker and forgot to decompress before the water. My knee went into my chin and almost knocked me out. I started swimming the wrong way to the finish line! I wandered around the base having no idea who I was, why I was wet and where my dry clothes were. The next morning, I felt like I'd been in a car accident.
  10. I have taught people with prosthetics to snowboard (AK and BK) and all of them have their weaker leg (the prosthetic) in front. The back leg needs to be able to skate and do more than the front.
  11. Wow! Too cool! They look like little mini-Bettys. (I used Skittles and chocolate too.)
  12. "I have her bindings at 15/30. I want her to really learn to carve, then she can do what she likes. I would just like to see the fundamentals well established." I'd go duck for beginner kids and talk about carving in a year or so after they've learned to turn confidently. I taught 5 to 7 year olds at Winter Park, and it isn't impossible, but it's usually slow going. I've seen some 5 year olds pick it up and ride well in a few lessons, but I found that I had to keep the lesson interesting even if that meant not concentrating on snowboarding the entire lesson. Attention spans are miniscule at the age of 5, and it's an art to keep them motivated and progress at learning to ride.
  13. HEY! I apologize for the Mexican hottie remark already! She'd kill me if she read these posts. Adios gabacha!
  14. My favorite person to thumb Berthoud with is my friend, Evelyn. She's a 25-yr-old Mexican hottie. Sometimes we don't even get our boards off and we have a ride. :)
  15. Thumb. That's half the adventure. It helps to be a girl.
  16. That was a rating by Ski Magazine. In Transworld SnowBoarding, Vail came in 7th.
  17. I-70 to exit 232, Highway 40. You can jump off almost anywhere and end up on the highway again. (Although I've had to swim out of there in arm-pit deep snow a few times.)
  18. I hit Berthoud Pass yesterday and it was waist deep and cold for Oct. (about 10 degrees). The snow was dense, but not wet-dense. You had to go steep and keep the nose up. Don't think I've seen such a dump in Oct. before, though 1995 was close and a little earlier in Oct. El nino?
  19. Berthoud Pass is my favorite area . . . free, steep and deep, but I guess you guys like your corduroy. I do too sometimes. At the prices that these combo passes sell for, you could buy both for less than for the price of a season's pass anywhere else in the world. As for the dope, well, it may become legal in Colorado after the Nov. 7 election. Hope all you heads are registered to vote! Or did you space out on that? So, if the marijuana initiative passes, it will be legal to posess up to an ounce, but illegal to smoke it or buy it. Sound like our government?
  20. I decided on the Extreme Balance Board.
  21. ok, I'm clueless. What is the zone and is there a web site?
  22. What are the actual advantages of Vew Doos, Extreme Balance Boards and Indo boards? What makes them better/worse/different?
  23. I've been fooling around on a bongo board at my health club and decided to buy one. Has anyone tried voodoo boards? Any thoughts on which one is the best?
  24. I am, and that's why I read TWS and hang out with teens sometimes. I'm not killing it in the park, but I'm curious about it and enjoy watching it. An accepting attitude goes a long way toward understanding, esp. w/teenagers. Weren't we all teenagers once? Aren't we all just humans going for the thrill of sliding downhill on snow? What's with all the us and them? peace.
