  1. I'll be in Moab this weekend. Maybe the next week. It should be open until June. Montezuma Bowl is in great shape! And they should pick up some new snow this week. On the 23-24th of May: 8th Annual Festival of the Brewpubs & Shakin at the Basin May Concert Series. I hadn't been to the Basin in a year and I was impressed with the improvements. There's even a tunnel under the highway for pedestrians.
  2. I checked out the Basin on Friday and the snow is exceptional top to bottom. Any Basin BBQ's or carve-days planned?
  3. Yep, it was a few hard, choppy falls during a GS/SL that did it. So frustrating! In the summer, I bike and that heals it. I didn't have it at all last season.
  4. Yes! Great anatomical view, Phil. Are you sure that it's the smaller muscle (illiopsoas) underneath and not the Sartorius? I've had this on and off for years. What kind of riding irritates it? Poor form on my heelside or something?
  5. I'm not even sure what that thing is called but almost every season, I've irritated it (usually the back leg) and then I can't drive a stick shift or climb stairs, and definately, I can't ride. Any hints for rehabing or preventing this pesky injury?
  6. Oh, and I ended up with a huge bruise in my crotch from the platter lift. ??????? Anybody else get that bruise too or is my crotch especially sensitive?
  7. Yes, I'm going to see them both at Natty's. And i'm going to increase my forward lean if it's icy. I'm going up to the Park tomorrow, possibly Thursday. Call me if you go. But you should have seen this course. Parts of it were no wider than a catwalk and it turned and slanted all over the place!
  8. Soooo, I went to Howelson yesterday to race, and I managed to do the platter lift ok by putting it between my legs with the bindings out. (Thanks to Bomber folks for all the suggestions). The only problem I had with the lift was when one of the rugrats was goofing off and fell on a steep section, taking down 4 others including myself. But the race was a real eye opener. It was steep (no big deal) and very icy (a big deal on a freestyle board). I fell three times, once in a GS run and twice in one of the slalom runs. I came in third out of three women, but I did post the best times, just not the best times for two runs combined. OK, here's the kicker: the other two women were on hards and did not fall. I am inviting all you hard-heads to tell me what I already know. I need to go to an alpine board because you never know when a course is going to be icy.
  9. I heard this on the local radio news but they said that it was a snowboard patroller. They should get their facts straight, esp when dealing with a death.
  10. Thanks. I signed up for the two races and we'll just have to see if I can get to the top of that hill.
  11. Thanks for the ideas. I tore the rotator cuff a week and a half ago at a slopestyle competition (tis better to land flat on a jump than to knuckle it) and have been able to clean houses, work 2 catering events, and on Sunday, race a GS and a slalom @ Copper (a silver and a gold in a field of four). It hurts like heck, but racing was a blast. I haven't paid my entry fee yet for this Sunday, but I could shine on the races. I'm prequalified from last year's Nationals. But the number two alpine racer in my age group is also in my series (and lives about 20 mintues away from me). We were .07 seconds apart in the dual GS (she won). It's going to be pretty hard to talk sense into myself and not race this weekend. I haven't had many chances to race gates. How much beer would it take to talk one of the ski patrol into 'biling me up there?
  12. I have to race at Howelson HIll on Sunday and have heard horror stories about their Poma lift. Any suggestions for getting up the hill with one arm? it's my left shoulder that's screwed up and I ride regular.
  13. Winter Park has one of the deepest bases in the state (Silverton and Wolf Creek are higher) with 69" at mid mountain, 75" up top. This warm weather has been a drag but the snow conditions are still great.
  14. Just wondering if it helps to stick your arms out in front as you cross the finish line. I've heard that the sensor is thigh-high and it doesn't pick up the front of your board. Facts?
  15. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay for the broken hose. It ended up being only about $60 worth of gas, but it attracted three fire engines with lights flashing.
  16. I could write a book about all the stupidass things I've forgotten or spaced out on, but the most embarrassing was when I was pumping gas and drove away from the pump with the pump still in my gas tank. It ripped the hose out of the machine and caused a huge geyser of gas spouting everywhere! I had to wait there for the cops to arrive and pay for all the spilled gas, but the worst was being on Hwy 40 on President's Day Saturday with thousands of cars driving by pointing at me. The gas station was owned by a Nepalese family and they were all running around screaming in Nepalese while the wife poured chemicals on the spill in her native dress. I can laugh about it now, but it freakin freaked me out!
  17. he he he. Teens can really make your hair stand on end! I inherited a stepson a couple of years ago and we have a great love/hate relationship. He's 16 now and has accepted the fact that I'm not going away but we still have our moments. I find that the most effective way to go is to address the problem immediately instead of letting it steam inside you till you explode. Don't yell, and treat him/her/them like adults. This doesn't always work, of course. Sometimes kids try to snake my turn in line for jumps, halfpipe, liftlines and in the cafeteria. They usually don't try it twice with me. In fact, they probably call me the Pipedragon! Are kids worse than they use to be? Maybe. They grew up in a different environment and culture than us. They've had every toy and technology at their fingertips and have been living in a world that never asked them to grow up. Enter the economic crisis our country is experiencing. No worries, they'll grow up when they try to go out into the workforce. Waaah! The few jobs that will be available will go to folks who are mature, responsible and polite.
  18. I'm headed to Copper this weekend but will be teaching at WP for NSCD on Monday. Where do you work?
  19. Ian, I am also a WP/MJ employee (I do the snow report in the morning). I don't own any "hards" because of finacial reasons, but I would love to hang out with carvers, as I race GS and slalom and could use some technique hints and fast guys to ride with. The only hardbooters I know in this region are Karla Whitacre, Stan Seagress and Mark Kress. the snow goddess
  20. Thanks for the advice, Kent. I'll look into it. Does needing to be out of work mean you can't see for a month? My work is at home, but I'd have to be able to see. Is it more expensive than Lasik? Like ballpark ... how many G's? I'm totally interested.
  21. Thanks, can I win something besides a case of terrible beer?
  22. One other thing: do whatever you can to NOT get any more concussions in the near future. That is really no bueno for the brain!
  23. The week after my first bad concussion, I kept falling asleep at the computer. I called one guy for an interview (I was a newspaper reporter at the time) and he informed me that i had already called and interviewed him the day before. I was like, "Really? What did I ask?" It would have been ok if I'd only been dazed and confused, but I had this monster headache any time i wasn't asleep. My cognitive skills have never been the same ... or so I claim, it could just be old age! I'd rather break a bone than get another concussion like that!
