  1. Oh, and Thor. I go to WP or MJ (on pow days) regularly, Tues and Thurs mornings. I do alot of laps on Prospector and Eskimo .. in the ehem ... parks. But I love doing Cranmer and the one next to Dark Territory. No speed enforcers there. I'm taking my 163 up tomorrow to practice for GS and maybe do some Nastar. The Nastar National Championships are at Winter Park this year.
  2. First of all, queequeg, you do NOT want to get what I had. It lasted for three weeks and compromised my lungs so bad that walking up a flight of stairs hurt. I had to go out on a 9-inch pow day at the Jane, but I was hugging trees during rests, heaving. As for long term effects on carvers, heck, I'm already feeling them. Bad concussions have lasting side effects, and the neck does not recover well from whiplash (What will Shaun White's neck be like when he's my age? That fall in the pipe he took at X Games would have knocked me out cold! At least he'll have the money to deal with it). I am thinking about wearing a mouthguard for BX and freestyle. I want to eat food for a long time. And I've found that a good quality inversion table can undo all kinds of lower back damage after a hard day on the slopes.
  3. Maybe that's why I have less knee pain. I caught the flu around New Year's and lost about 10 pounds. Less mass = less strain with each turn. I get cold easier when I weigh less, too.
  4. I don't mind paying big bucks for good food, but it really ticks me off to pay alot and receive something that's barely edible. Winter Park (love this mountain but I gotta say this) has horrible food. Even at half price, it sucks. On the other hand, Vail has great food ... gourmet, even though it costs an arm and a leg. My cheapy lunch is a bowl of instant noodle soup. I bring a cooked chicken breast, cut up the pieces and mix it in. Yum. Most mountain cafeterias don't care if you use their hot water.
  5. It's an old farts organ recital ... he he. Good points in this thread. Core muscles are key and flexiblity helps, but only goes so far. I'm more flexible than most 8 year olds, but I still get back pain. I'm doing better this year because my mantra is SWEET SPOT. When I'm riding centered, I have less joint issues. It's even helped my knees. But all it takes is one good crash or landing a jump flat.
  6. In fact, everyone who is disturbed about this incident should write them. I already did.
  7. I think that someone should send Keystone's higher ups the web address to this thread. They would be appalled to see all the negative comments about their mountain displayed to a large number of riders who might not frequent their mountain anymore. I don't think any of them had a clue as to what bomberonline represents. Douche bags!
  8. While we're baashing Vail Resorts, Inc., has anyone heard that longtime environmental writer and Summit Daily News reporter, Bob Berwyn, was fired by the paper because he wrote an opinion piece about how VR was fudging their snow totals (which happened to be true at the time), and they threatened to pull out all of their advertisements. He refused to write a retraction statement to get his severence pay. How slimy is that of VR and SDN? Or maybe that should be a new thread.
  9. I have to say, I don't see you riding dangerously, Fin, but don't blame it on Keystone. I've had hassles at other mountains like Copper. You're right about the mall cop thing. These yahoos get a yellow coat and a nametag and they go overboard trying to prove their authority. I'm kind of surprised that the ski patroller took Len's side. Usually they are the voice of reason. I've never had hassles with SP (except when I poached a closed run ... I deserved it.) That's why I love the Basin, ski patrol but no slope pigs. Maybe because Keystone is so frequently icy that it's a real issue there. I've held a grudge against Keystone since the 80s-90s when they decided that they didn't want our slimey snowboard kind (until they realized they were losing alot of money to other resorts, then they tried to convince us how cool they were). I lived within walking distance to the gondola for 11 years before I could access Keystone without skis and I rarely visited the place once they changed their minds.
  10. Yep, wind chill is part of it, but humidity can make it feel colder. I'm usually a wuss when it comes to cold because I'm always the first to start teeth chattering, but sometimes I have to be out there for work or competition or whatever, and usually I find that it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I found a pair of thin padded shorts and they really help keep the butt warm. Why don't snowboard clothing manufacturers put insulation/padding in the butt? I would rather look like my butt was fat than to not feel it at all.
  11. I looked over your web site and you have some great pics. Unfortunately, I don't have any budget to buy images. I'd be ashamed to tell you what the publishers are paying me for this headache. I found a 13 year old girl who will wear a speed suit and a bib while practicing gates this week at Winter Park. This is better because I need parental consent. I thought maybe there were some parents that had good pics that wanted to get their kids in a skiing book. No worries.
  12. Thanks. I'd have to have the child's parents' permission to publish, so it would have to be someone you know and can contact. I only need two or three: starting gates, gates. I'm trying to get some this week, but the kids don't have bibs on and I'm still getting used to timing a kid going 40 MPH. I was hoping someone had a kid who ski races (FREAK!) and has Sharpshooter or Vastaction shots they own. But I may end up getting a lucky shot after all.
  13. Just wondering if any of you folks have a high resolution photo of one of your kids ski racing (sorry it can't be snowboarding). I'm in charge of photography for a kids skiing book and we need one good racing shot (gates or at the start). I just figured one of you might have a vastaction or sharpshooter photo that would fill the bill. The Snow Goddess
  14. OK, Lee, what are Hindu squats and Gabriel, what is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Are these Tantric sex positions?
  15. I'm reading alot of research that says interval training does more good in less time. That's aerobic to the point of anaerobic ... breathing so hard you almost throwup. I've found this to be true. Climbing Stillwater Pass on my bike doesn't take long but I'm standing up and heaving the whole way. That creates better results than biking for hours. Also loving Woodward at Copper ladies night (half off on Thurs). I've loved trampolines since I was a wee one.
  16. Whaddaya mean RARE sighting of the Snow Goddess? I can be found under the Panoramic Lift (top of Mary Jane where there are lots of groomed above treeline trails to choose from) or in the park features on the Winter Park side. And I hate to say this about my own mountain, but bring your own lunch. The cafeteria choices on both mountains are terrible. I won't even buy it at half price. It's one of my pet peeves. I don't mind paying high prices for good food, but .... if your best choice is instant oatmeal in a packet, c'mon!
  17. I have a pass to the Boat and I love that place, but it is hard to get around. I'll get in touch when we're headed that way. It seems that trail maps are hard to find and you keep ending up in deadends with long lift lines to get out. Frustrating!

  19. Hey. I take exception to that slam on resort snow reports. I look at the numbers and tell the truth. Winter Park has always under-reported conditions and lifts open. I can't say that holds true for all resorts though.
  20. check it out: http://www.skyhidailynews.com/article/20090824/NEWS/908249993&parentprofile=search I thought Copper was one of the stronger properties that Intrawest owns/manages.
  21. LIVE LOVE RIDE and anyone else that experiences a concussion: If you have health insurance, get it checked out. Brain injuries are unpredictable and deadly. A friend of mine (the Master Brewer from the Dam Brewery) fell at home last fall and didn't seek medical help. By the time he was in a hospital, it was too late.
  22. I agree with the Kresster. "Old-school-stein-ericksen-sweater types" ... LOL! I can just see some of the elite ski and snowboard school pretty hair types hating this new work requirement. But seriously, injury prevention aside, I find that helmets give me less severe hairdos than hats. After a few years of wearing one, you'll feel wierd not having one on while snowboarding. And, you have one more place to put your sponsors stickers.
  23. I agree with Bobdea. The resorts decide when to close. Breck used to stay open well into late May. Keystone and Copper used to stay open much later too. This year, almost all of the resorts closed sooner than usual. So, ya, it's the almighty dollar that rules, not the snow conditions.
  24. It's pretty easy to get to A Basin from Denver, about 1.5 hours from the airport. There are shuttles from the airport and Keystone/Summit County has a good free bus system. But it is pretty high .. 12,600' at the top.
  25. The Basin rocks! It's for real. No high-speed quads or gondolas. An old fashioned resort that just keeps getting better. Season pass deals are unbelievable!
