Appropriating the persona of a handicap person ouch ! If it works, good for you . I have found wearing a jacket that is similar in colour  to Ski Patrol or Ski School also seems to keep most straight liners at bay.

I’m wearing a Ski School jacket, and I still get run into from time to time...but then I’m on a snowboard, so it MUST always be my fault!

  2. Can’t say I’m a big fan of those Zermatt videos... all the untrained eye will see, is that in that second video, he’s initiating turns purely with his upper body! And any beginner emulating his stance in the first video, with their upper body heavily rotated, is going to flex their back leg more, and have weight on the back foot

The Swiss deregulated instruction a few years ago, so I’m not sure I’d hold them up as the ideal

The CASI vids are a better representation, speaking as an instructor.

Ha ha! That was the first year I rode for the Hot International Team...my gf at the time, said she could do better than the model.

But she never put her money where her moth was! 😂

Whitefish Resort, Montana.  Organically formed snake track in the Ptarmigan Bowl.  Johnasmo said it formed in just a few days of locals following each other.  It finally got soft enough for me to brave jumping into it and the bottom half was a lot of fun!  The track was waist deep plus very surfy feeling.

Those are super popular in Japan...they even hold comps with them!

  5. What did I learn? Not to waste a single chance to get on the snow! From being a full-time Instructor and doing 120+ days per year, I dropped down to 20 a season when I went part time, and started working for an airline. I’ve managed to get it back to 42 days on snow so far this winter, and next year, when I turn 60, I plan to do more, as my seniority improves at Delta.

I learned that I need to keep a level of fitness all year, not just in the weeks leading up to the season, especially as I get older.

I learned that, after not racing this season, that I still have some competitive drive left in me. I decided today that I’m going to compete in the Airline World Championships next winter, I want to try for one more title.

Most of all, I learned how much snowboarding still means to me...

    Hi davekempmeister

I think we are of the same 70's vintage, maybe you remember this add from Skateboarder Mag?  I bet Mig does:)

When starting this thread I pondered breaking skateboarding into a few different sub categories, then realized that this could be done for surfing as well and would never end ... so I just kept it simple.

Adds like the one below is why I messed around with slalom skateboarding, always thought that it was fun.  Slalom skateboarding was the beginning of experimenting with stance angles, a life long pursuit!  Both feet pointer very forward is fun, but it just didn't feel right to me.

Regardless, your 'both feet pointed very forward' skateboard heritage seems to have impacted your riding right up to today.  Cool.

    Thanks for you reply

    Rob

Yup, I cut that ad out and put it on my wall. It hung around until I actually got on the Turner Summerski Team!

I started skating in 1977, skiing in 1981, and snowboarding in 1985... no plans to stop any time soon 😉

Can you review the Nirvana, Proteus, MK and Rev next?  I really liked listening and watching.

I’d LOVE to...now if someone could just send them to me 😉

Well, if any of you are headed to Utah next season, for a visit, and have one...bring it along!

Oh...and when I said it was stable at speed, this is what I meant. (I was vague on the video, because I don’t want to scare my wife!).

  8. If you like Zardoz, there’s an application process, called the ‘Felix Method’. You apply Zardoz, then apply the appropriate hot wax on top. Scrape, then brush...and hold on! It’s insanely slick and keeps you fast all day.

Friggin’ love mine, the tankers get less time these days.

JUst spent 3 days on it, with my favorite and highest level snowboarding student... I’ve been riding with him since he was 9, he’s now 25. He is absolutely fearless, loves to carve and has no interest in the park.

It was the best possible test for the board.

This board is everything I’d hoped it would be! He did some filming for me with a DJI Osmo pocket camera, with a built in gimbal. He’s going to send me the footage, then I’ll do a full review.

We covered over 30,000 vertical feet everyday for 3 days, and hit some reasonable speeds on it too. Rock solid.

    Time's up. Review time!

I'm contemplating getting a hardboot specific one of these made at 170 long and 23.5cm wide with ptex topsheet.

Funny you saying that now! It’s finally stopped snowing in Utah, and we’re getting some groomer days. We did a little filming today, and we’ll do more tomorrow, so stay tuned! 👍🏾

Victoria Jealouse works as a barista and is wearing glasses or she has a twin.

    Victoria Jealouse...*sigh* 😍🥰

I met her at a Burton event somewhere in Cali, back in the day, and we chatted briefly. I didn’t know if it was just me, but it felt like something clicked...

About 2 years later she was at my resort, just sitting on a bench. I walked by, heading to the locker room, with a group of instructors that I’d been training.

She looked up, flashed that 1,000 watt smile 😍, and with a little wave, said “Oh hey, how are you?”, I laughed nervously like some teen seeing their crush, smiled back and kept walking. IDIOT  🤦🏽‍♂️

I still To this day, wonder what might have happened if I’d stopped. 😔

  12. @BobD personally I don’t really feel torque in my ankle, in the screen grab above, there’s a lot of rotation in my hip, but I don’t see much in my ankle? 🤷🏾‍♂️

@WinterGold - what do you think about all this Gerald?

@Mig I take your point, I hear what you say. I guess in my situation, as Bobd says, I’m thinking as an instructor, and therefore also thinking about my goofy students/trainees... I need, as a Full-Cert/Trainer/Examiner, to be able to do everything switch as well, so for me, duck stance for carving, HAS to work 🤣

I’ve always been double posi in hards, duck in softs (at least for the last 15yrs), but I am experimenting with my carving double posi on my new Coiler soft boot hammerhead...if it ever stops snowing here! I find though that I’m having to go at least 15 on the back, otherwise I boot out on layed out heelsides, so it’s all or nothing. Maybe when the snow gets firmer again, I can lessen that.

  13.

And that chart above? Yes those three top level riders ride double positive, however I noticed that virtually everyone else in that list, rides duck.

I personally find that I have better balance by riding, and carving, at least slightly duck, when in soft boots. I ride my hard boots on my alpine boards with a forward stance, and raced up to World Cup level.  Competing at SBX, I kept a little duck on my back foot for the sake of stability. If, without a board attached, you jump into the air and land, you generally land duck, not with both feet forward.

Duck for freeriding helps me absorb unseen terrain abnormalities and undulations. Same with carving in softs, where the boots don’t absorb as much as hards.

Different horses for different course... I use what works best, depending on the board, boots, snow conditions and my goals at the time.

In the video? Front 21, rear -9...

We will be at Park City Thursday and Monday, Brighton Friday and Solitude Sunday

@TSUNAMIBAY - it was brief, but fun Kurt. Great meeting you and your wife and friends for a few runs! As I said, hats off to you for tackling the bumped out fresh snow (not to mention the pea soup fog in a resort you didn’t know)  in hards so well, on your Donek Rev, hopefully the next time we ride together, it’ll be perfect corduroy!

And yes, I’m now getting sore from when that skier ran into me... I feel as though I’ve been punched between the shoulders, hard enough to get whiplash! 😡

Cant wait to spend 7hrs flying tomorrow! 😔

Make some turns for me, have fun!

Justin doesn't have proper starting grips, just 4x4 inch starting posts. He is racing on a stubbies course, and with a steepish drop off from the starting gate so that his competitor pushes only to start with her poles, then skates only the first gate to try to get additional speed. Still a remarkable performance on Justin's part.

Learning to ski gate bash is my next step for improving my own NASTAR results. I have the body armour, just need the face protection.

At my local hill a few years ago, they got pissed off when I started hitting gates like we did in the 90’s, dressed like gladiators. Every run one or two poles would come out of the ground, meaning someone would actually have to leave the hut and do some work! 🤣

I stopped doing NASTAR at Park City, happily getting Platinums in hards and soft boots, when they started making the last two gates super offset, ‘to SLOW’ people down, as they claimed they didn’t have enough fencing/netting for a longer run-out area! And it’s easier to deal with that on a pair of skis by step-turning. On a board you either skid and lose speed, or demolish the gates, and they’d already told me off for that! 😡

While I'm certain Prior BX boards are damp the rider is absorbing the chatter in his knees quite adeptly.  Although there's not too much chatter there as those slopes are HERO snow conditions.  I see this and I just want to ride those slopes.

You’re absolutely right... the one or two videos where’s the snow is less than perfect, those boards get bucked!

@xy9ine, I just went out on my faux hammerhead soft boot carver (in mostly crappy conditions), with my stance at

37F 12R and 22” stance width. I normally ride a 21” stance (I’m 5’ 6”), and it felt great! Weird thing is... I felt as though I wanted to go wider! 🤷🏾‍♂️

So I've moved them to 23”, and I’ll see how that goes tomorrow. 🤞🏽

It definitely does on the Now Drives. My three sets of El Hefes are older ones, and I switched all ankle straps to more responsive ones. I am very curious to hear about the performance of this new one. How is the response and support @Emdee406?

I just got off the mountain, my second time on the new El Hefes, mounted on my new Custom Coiler. The first time was in Japan, poorly groomed, icy, rough and flat light.

Today was better weather-wise, but not much. I was on my home mountain, full-on blizzard, zero visibility and flat light.

I’m starting to think this board is jinxed! 🤣

Anyway I did manage to hit a few tree-lined groomers, where I could almost see! I have the straps adjusted for max power...and they delivered! The carves felt like hard boot precision, it definitely makes it more responsive than the 2018 version. Really good power transfer. The combination of the binding, stiff Salomon boots, and the Coiler? I’ve ridden less responsive hard boot set ups...except this is more versatile. Loved it!

@Mig, I love your idea of the ‘Frankenstein’ binding, it would be awesome! 👍🏾👍🏾

Yes I got the 2019 version. The reversible ankle strap looks nice, but to be honest I wonder if it make a significant differences.

Yes it does!!! Leaving pencil lines everywhere. The 2018 strap definitely has more ‘give’.
