I scored 3 passes for the Big, so it looks like I get to join you guys up there tomorrow, the 16'th! I'll probably be starting the day over on chair 2. You can't miss me... Bright yellow and black North Face Jacket, black hat, and black pants riding the old Nitro Asym or my Palmer Crown (depending on how soft it gets).

You are going to have to reinforce the heck out of whatever boot you are going to be hacking up. Depending on how wide your metal stock is going to be (looks pretty narrow from your sketch) I'd be worried about ripping it out of the bottom of the boot at a very importune moment. From my layman pov, it looks like most of the clamping force a hard boot is going to take is on the top of the toe and heel (and of course spread out to the 4 t-nuts in the heel for Fintech's and Intech's). Judging from your sketch, your channel might end up in places that are not designed to hold any force at all. If you were to do something like this with a soft boot it might end up being even worse.

Might I suggest that you get some material that is very similar to what you would like to use, and cram the suckers full of snow and ice and see how well they are going to clear themselves.

Wow! Guess I was spoiled when I was learning so many years ago... 2600ft of continuous vertical drop, and I thought it was kinda a small hill by comparison.

I've been up on my old Nitro Asym the past few days due to the conditions. The public just stares and won't say anything (maybe I scare them into silence:eek:) but I'm assured at least twice a day that a lift rat will say 'You know your board is broken... right?'

I should have clarified; there would be a roller assembly in the toe and another in the heel of the boot. There would be very little play at all. biggest reason I thought of the rollers would be for ease of entry. A person could engage the binding from the toe or heel side. There is still the problem of ice and snow with the rollers.

I will register as the 20% that play one on TV!After working in hardware stores, ski shops, auto repair places, motorcycle repair places and re-modeling crappy houses, I ended up having to modify/build/create way to much stuff so I really can't keep my hands out of something like this!

The other 4 rollers would be sandwiching it from the bottom. You might even be able to use smaller bearings as the rollers. If you wanted to get really trick, you could make the upper roller out of different durometers of urathane and get some interesting flex out of it. I like the idea of a single pin to lock it into place that bjvircks brought up.

You might want to consider some type of single, dual or even triple roller assembly with a small guide infront and behind the rollers in the sole of the boot instead of a track. take a look at the top image. http://img.directindustry.com/images_di/photo-g/manual-trolley-for-electric-chain-hoist-380217.jpg My reasoning is that a close tolerance sliding channel affair would have to be lined up perfectly to engage, and you would be able to use an I beam on the board itself that is fairly strong (however I might wonder how strong it would be torsionaly)

The first thing that pops into my mind when you describe this is a center bottom mount drawer glide :rolleyes: http://www.dlawlesshardware.com/clhetoor21in.html I take it the boot side interface would be recessed. I can only imagine the ice/snow buildup you would get. That problem there would stop me dead in my tracks, but perhaps I'm visualizing it wrong.

Now that the Olympics are done we might actually see an influx of BX and wannabe BX riders that might want to figure out how to rail some turns.

First breakthrough carving board was a borrowed 90-91 Nitro. I think it was a GTX... maybe... It had the same graphics as my 91-92 EFT Asym. Had to get used to how fast the thing was, but after a few days I was able to start laying down some very nice toe-side carves. I loved that board and looked for years for one, but to no avail... :(

Thanksgiving day in 96 (I think) at Big Mountain MT. Visibility was anywhere from 2ft to 10ft. I had to stop every 2 turns and sit down to keep from falling over. Half the time I didn't know If I was moving or not. On a side note, I was riding a Gnu Vertigo!

I've had my Superpipes for... wow... a really long time! lol If I remember right, I picked them up circa 95. I still use them regularly because I've never found another soft boot that has as much support/stiffness/comfort. Finding a binding that they will fit in is the hard part because they are so narrow. My older K2 bindings work with them pretty decent though.

I broke mine about 8 years ago... Typical scenario; last run of the day and getting tired but really wanted to hit that perfect jump one more time. :rolleyes: Came down off balance on my heel-side edge - that old Nitro EFT Asym would not let you get away with that kinda slop - down I went on my hip and the nose of the board slammed into a small mogul at the bottom of the ravine. I swear i could hear my left ankle 'pop' in my old Koflach Alpintour's! I lay there in pain for a good 5 min ignoring the calls from the lift, then side slipped the rest of the way down the mountain. Any weight it put on my front foot hurt sooooo bad not to mention driving my old POS Volvo w/ a 5-speed back to town, glad i could rev-match. Good thing was it only took about 8 weeks to heal and it was the end of the season.
