  1. had some close calls friday on a tight corner on a blue trail a little girl stops just right of the middle as im carving on the right side of the trail. then her dad on the left side crosses in front of her and stops blocking the right side of trail. my 2 options carve hard heel side blindly into traffic, or pick a line between the 2 so i had to check my speed best as i could and dodge between them. i looked like a moron but i was at a safe distance to start and we were all traveling the same speed until the sudden stop and blockage of the right side while skiiers try to pass me on left. a mixture of events made it a close call. but strattons main trail under the quad i waited for a clear trail, which is very wide at this point, with no one except mel who was with me uphill i start my carve. im taking up the left side of the trail in repetitive turns, coming out of toe side mid transition i see a shadow, so i instantly bring the board around to check my speed and this skiier standing upright suddenly pops into my vision, and blows right past me. the only thing that stopped him from hammering me at full speed was that i pushed him as he went in front of me, which forced him offcourse slightly. he continued down hill at full speed without ever looking back. was he anticipating me continuing my carve? if he was, his plan was to barely miss my tail at full speed on a wide open trail. in my head i try to leave a good buffer so i dont spook the person im passing as well as being predictable so i dont scare someone into doing something stupid. i also lift my forward hand and point to where im carving heel and toeside so i wont surprise someone looking to pass.
  2. hey guys! im in northern nj and could only make stratton on friday for my first eces event. the guys at the tent did a great job and everyone was friendly ofcourse. usually i like to go to sugarloaf anyway and get a great deal to rent a 10 person house. and i actually did go to both mountains this year. my 2 cents is that for the guys who want to know what board to buy you need to demo and fall in love. reading a review is not specific enough. so for these people who only go one day and need to take a few runs to dial in the settup and experience how the board handles, they can only experience a couple boards in the am of one day. so for daytrippers a yearly demo would make them familiar with more boards so that when they buy something they can be happy with the purchase. and i was also thinking a $5 demo fee to cover shipping would be appropiate and affordable. and waiving this fee for volunteers can give the guys some rest who have to give up lots of riding time. But for me the chance to ride with such a large variant of fellow carvers and to learn should definately be yearly, and for the best turnout should be centralized. but like i said, im in nj and would go to sugarloaf every year. but exploring new towns and mountains makes for a fun trip also.

  10. well if you are someone who is proud of your technique then you would love alpine boards. i was a long time skier and boarder (since 3rd grade) before i was introduced and carving a board is much more fun i find. look for used equipment on the classified section. the good stuff is still good in used condition. find a hardbooter to give you some pointers when you go out because it is a different feeling and for me felt different than what skiing and soft botting taught me to stand. but no i dont have used equipment, but there is a looking for section of the classifieds where you can post that you want a cheap used setup to get started.

  18. some loser who traded in his hardboots for my fat bob...haha. whats up mark?
  19. ill be at creek this week after the roads clear from tuesday morning storm. what days you guys plan on being there?
  20. makes sense. the guy who introduced me to hardboots over 10 years ago is a family friend and a math teacher at sparta, also joined the schools ski team as a board instructer. so hard booters coming out of sparta hs seems connected. im in bergen county now so dont know how much snow is gonna hit and stop me from driving. what days this week are you planning on riding? maybe wedensday? i went out to campgaw right after the big storm and i couldnt hold a turn, not enough speed on the small hill and powder was so soft i was just pressuring right through it. ha, i had to bomb the park to get speed and carve between the tabletops, turned a lot of heads, they all thought i created a new snowboard.

    mouth guards

its not like helmets or mouth guards are expensive. if you can afford ski's or a board setup you can afford a helmet. personal responsibility here, but there are no ill side effects of wearing this gear so why not.
  22. hey whats up guys, im mike and just found this site a while ago. im 25 and grew up in vernon and started hardbooting there, i guess 10 years ago, havent been there these past 2 years. would love to meet up during the week after v day. did you get justins last name because i may know him.
  23. hey guys my first post from nj. i dont have vid since there arent a lot of hardbooters near me. im going out this week on my new setup after this weeks 30" plus tommorrow's 16". but to the point my first setup was on a hot asym board( no you cant have it) and learning on that was ehh fun! but the way i was taught was that whenever we stopped at a meetup point or at the end of a run on a light traffic day, we would always try a 360. the transition from a fast hard carve to a low speed really helped you realize your faults in technique. i am successful about 1/3 of the time, but different from the vid i stay low all the way through so you actually are carving the whole time and not riding flat and putting board on edge to technically be carving. it requires constant change of body pressure and postion especially when you are almost stopped. many times i was close and just fell on my knees at a complete stop, and i have also completed a 360 and then stopped so i pop out to continue down hill. you newbies should definately try to do it as much as possible to work on form. i like steep trails that merge with another at a flat point. enough rambling, will post vid this week after riding if i can get my friend out to film.
