  1. im rockin a Nitro Superateam with softboots for BX. stiff, but still a freestyle-ish board
  2. I was reading a small Mountainboarding mahgazine a few years ago and i specifically remember seeing a custom hemp fiber deck that accepted MBS trucks and foot straps. It calimed to be significantly lighter and more durable than the standard MBS decks.
  3. Who's going, what events and what age brackets? Slalom, GS, Boardercross - Junior Men Hope to see everyone there
  4. ive been tearing through a pair of 686 pants for the last season and a half. The waterproofing is good, but the pants cant stand up to the ammount of use that i give them. One of the inside cargo pockets tore out when it was in the wash, but overall the pants are somewhat decent. The magnetic/velcro combo on the pocket flaps works well, and the removable liner pants are both warm and comfy.
  5. It would seem that a flatter airfoil design would lend itself to greater efficiency. There is probably a reason for airplanes having flat wings as opposed to curved ones. A lot of the power from a kite comes from the lift that is generated by air moving at different speeds above and below the kite. In order to pull off a decent blade design, it would seem that a better strut design would be needed in place of the inflatable bladder system found on most kites. I could foresee one benefit of having a blade kite being greater ease of water re-launch.
  6. I ride an Oxygen 170 LTD and have no problem utilizing the torsional flex to myt advantage. On a good day i am usually able to overlap my trenches at the tansition points of my turns for at least two to three feet, without running on a flat board. This torsional flex, although subtle, allows for faster transitions but the lighter construction of the board sacrifices dampening significantly. I also use the torsional felx of a board to teach intermediate riders better edge control. When they are finally able to flex the board and get it to rail a set of perfect carves you can almost see the concept clicking in the head. The gaping grin on the student's face at the bottom of the run usually indicates their mastery of the torsional flex of their board.
  7. when i have my boards sharpened i usually do not detune until i am out on the hill and can get a feel for what exactly i want to do. After a few runs i but out a quarter and start rubbing the exact spots where i want less edge.
  8. notice the shape of the cyloid turn and the lagre portion where the board is facing down the fall line, as opposed to a sharper, arcier turn that comes further accross the fall line.
  9. i wont be competing in boardercross this weekend because of my shoulder seperation, but i will be there for GS and slalom on sunday.
  10. to turn is to divert momentum. to divert momentum from forward motion means to decrease speed. more railed, carved arcs=less speed through a course
  11. Does anyone have a link that gives a good description of the boardercross course at Bardonechia? I looked around for about an hour and couldnt come up with anything decent.
  12. Lee, from the riding that i got a chance to see on the first day of the AASI clinic i would recomend a longer board for GS. You seem to have an argessive style that might overpower a 158 in a GS course. I ride a 170 for GS and sometimes wish that it was a 177.
  13. a guy i work with (former Jr World Cup skier) did this when his ski binding didnt release. not a good story to hear after lunch...
  14. DAAAAAA BEAAAAAAAARRRRRRSSSS!!!! you all might as well start cheering for da bears now cause when they beat you then you wont cry as much my prediction for the game : Bears 17 Jaguars 8
  15. The clinic was sick!!! We all missed Lee on day two, and as for the snow, the extra day (and night) made for an excellent slalom day. I was realy impressed with all the riders in the clinic and feel that i gained a lot from both days. I would like to see central division (and all others for that matter) follow suit with snowboard specific race clinics. It is good to see that AASI is not solely focused on the freestyle aspects of our sport, as well as the fact that there are instructors out there that have an interest in racing/alpine. My only question is when will there be an AASI extreme carving clinic...
  16. The first board i baught was a supermodel 68, and i recently ploped the plates on it and havn't ridden any other board this season. That fact alone is impressive, but also keep in mind the board has been used on and off for 7 or 8 seasons.
  17. As far as boot fitters go, Steve Baughman, the guy that doest the bootfitting at william's ski Haus in Highland Park is the best as far as i know. He has done sevral apline snowboard-specific thermoflex jobs, including mine. If you have any issues with your boots, pressure points, etc., he can and will hook you up so that your feet are extra comfy while you're trenchin'. I also ride the USASA series at Tyrol regulary. It's a great place to convein with all the carvers in the area even if you arent competing. The cost of USASA can be a bit prohibitive, but if you intend on going to nationals (totally recomended, a guarenteed awesome time), then it is definately worth the cost.
  18. Raging Buffalo, in Algonquin, Illinois on the bank of the Fox river has been snowboard only from day one. It has the only all snowboard Patrol in the country and participates in Burton's Chill program.
  19. the answer to this question is simple: Store employee discount!!! Considering Nitros are made by Volkl, i thi9nk that i can put some trust in thew manufacture. Looks like its going to be a Superateam 55 or 57
  20. Im finally springing for a soft setup, and it looks like its going to be a nitro team or supurateam, Flow Team bindings and ride boots. does anyone have experience with nitro boards in terms of longevity and overall satisfaction?
  21. to solidify the da vinchi code hersay, my grandfather was a freemason and my dad has told that there is a lot of hating on catholics involved, but i would venture a guess that it is mostly one of the oldest drinking clubs around. **my drinking buddies have a masonry problem** but seriously, there are some real benefits to membership. My grandomther spent nearly 20 years in a masonic nursing home free of cost, i believe, following a stroke. The networking implications are also obvious, but that should not be the sole reason for joining anything.
  22. lets put it this way- if you wear a dayglow orange full body hunting suit complete with welding mask for gogles (i hope it was no more than a number 3 lense) to the hill, i think that you are pretty much asking for it, but like everything, there are limits which one must adhere to, ezpecially if you dont intend on appearing in the scope of a high power hunting rifle from the parking lot...
  23. its a good ad, but i have been seeing it for a few years now
  24. i'm 160lbs and the 167 was barely enough for GS. in my oppinion, a super agressive 130lb rider would have fun on the 67 while someone who doesnt ride as hard would prefer the next smaller size (i cant remember if they make a smaller gs board, they might drop down to a slalom radius board the nest size smaller). I ride a 158 blast for slalom, and it is beginning to get a little too soft for me after several seasons of riding, but was ideal when i first got it.
  25. i have been flying a trainer kite for about a month whenever the winds are fast enough, and sometimes even when they aren't, and i have that dialed in prety well. i am aware of the potential for the excessive boost, which is why i am looking for a kite around 11-12m.
