  1. depends on the favor
  2. I would rather have the threat of a SAR bill looming than abolish the practice all together. SAR callouts can be expensive, especially when helicopters or large search groups are involved, and these operations cannot run indefinitely without a substantial amount of funding. I'm all for charging in the case of 51% and above negligence on the part of the rescued, and think it's a good idea to have the threat of a large bill contributing to that little voice in the back of my head telling me what I am about to do is not such a good idea.
  3. bad year to be in tahoe, worse year to be in chicago. Watching the pacific storm activity lately it seems like there needs to be a big pressure system shift before anything major makes it to the tahoe area (the weekend of the 12th looks pretty good for a whopper though:biggthump)
  4. Northstar had some pretty big issues with coyotes last year. At one point I even believe that one tried to drag a kid that had fallen off into the woods. Needless to say, there was an ex-Marine that had a few good nights of 'yote huntin' after that incident:AR15firin. Moral of the story: don't feed wildlife, lock up your trash, and don't worry about coyotes when riding at northstar.
  5. You burn a lot of energy to stay warm, so my number on rule for winter camping is to make sure I'm getting plenty of calories, especially when I'm getting ready for bed. My personal favorite is the NOLS trick of adding butter to your late night hot chocolate- tastes great, warms you up, and keeps you warm all night.
  6. those final words, "im getting back into my car" were more than likely the final straw for the officer here. yes, the tazer is a bit excessive, as im sure a baton to the leg would have sufficed for the 6ft plus officer, but to allow the lady to initiate a high speed chase was simply not an option. further escalation would have put many more lives at risk than a surly old lady and an officer that felt he was doing exactly what he was trained to do.
  7. ive done that one a few times to get back into my race line- couldn't really describe how to do it, more of an 'oh ****, im off my line, better do something quick' type of move.
  8. Size 28-28.5 mp (10.5-11 US Mens). Used maybe 10 days, liners never molded. They're in great shape and ready for a second home. Here's the eBay Link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=120417750579
  9. Emailed Dan Yoja, got the info I needed. This guy is great!
  10. I am trying to sell a pair of UPZs, but have forgotten their size. Does anyone know how to determine the size by either the markings on the shell or measurements of the sole (or a combination???)?
  11. You should do fine, just be sure not to skip out on the leg presses and other strength exercises. I have loved every blast i've had (158 slalom and 167 GS), especially for the nice 'bounce' you get out of turns. Needless to say, they're great boards, but can be a bit stiff. I liked my slalom a lot better after a season of riding, as I felt a bit more control with the softened core.
  12. I've got an oxygen 170 I used to race on you could borrow for a few days. I havnt riden it (or taken it out of its bag) in a year and a half, so im not sure what kind of shape it's in. send me an email @ johnson.ross.a@gmail.com if you're interested. Im in incline village, BTW.
  13. I recently toured the manufacturing facility of Sentury Snowboards, a small reno company that produces freestyle and backcountry boards (no race decks yet). As far as I could tell the boards are high quality and well made, and i would bet they can do a custom job for a decent price.
  14. There are a few options if you would like to stay in the basin. In Incline Village there's the Parkside Inn, which is cheap and close to Diamond Peak. There is also the Hyatt, if you're looking for a nicer place. Moving to Crystal bay there's the Biltmore and the Cal-Neva, both nice hotel-casinos. There's a bunch of ghetto motels in Kings Beach I would recommend if you want your car broken into. There's always Northstar, but that is getting to be pretty expensive, or so I've heard. There's a few motels in Tahoe City that are pretty close to both Squaw and Alpine. I believe there is a bit of lodging up at Squaw, but I'm not too familiar with it. Hope I could help.
  15. I got this survey from the guy that runs my college's snowboard team, seems like it is for a legit cause and is only three sections long. It is from a research group at the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia
  16. Sound-tribe sector nine, i think
  17. There's a guy there named martin drayton that works in ski school that i would recommend. I dont know if he is still working there, but it's worth looking up.
  18. i think the overlap design makes them easier to get in and out of- just spread it wide open and you're set. yeah, i got a new pair of UPZs and they hurt like hell the first day out. The liners they come with stock are super thin, which i think contributes to that initial pain. When i replaced the liners in my last pair the differernce was like night and day. Footbeds help too. I always undo the buckles when im not riding, even after the boots are broken in. i find that doing this allows me to crank the buckles when i ride without feeling like my feet are going to fall off.
  19. this popped up on my home page the statistics make me glad i quit drinking that crap
  20. i like the saying, "clear and copious wins the race" i read somewhere that people that refill plastic water bottles from the tap live an average of three years longer than people that dont reuse plastic water bottles. And yes, B vitamins makes your piss a weird shade of yellow, even when you're well hydrated. I always stuff a water bottle in my jacket when im riding and refill it about once or twice in a day of riding. weird thing, all that water goes in but very little comes out.
  21. If you are looking to stay with Burton i suggest getting a Burton Supermodel or Canyon. I know that Canyons were produced as long as 180s and i believe supermodels come in a size at or above 170. If you are looking to go a little shorter without giving up control I recomend the Nitro Superateam 163. I ride the 157 version, but am a bit smaller than you, and love the stiffness of the carbon reinforcements.
  22. to clairify my earlier post i am looking for the 4 hole version
  23. i would be willing to pay a decent amount and/or make a nice trade for a 4 hole cant plate (3 or 6 degree) compatible with non-burton boards. I have been searching for one for a few seasons to no avail. If you have one or know someone who does i would be generous with the price and would be willing to throw in something else of greater value to sweeten the deal.
  24. during the off season i like to run stairs to simulate the type of movement/coordination used in cross-under turns. running down stairs trying to move my feet and legs as fast as possible while maintaining control and keeping my upper body quiet is the closest you can come in my oppinion to simulating what's required in crossunder turns. if you can do this try it while holding a drink without spilling it (beer usually doesnt work too well with this one:D). while riding focus on making the turn happen from the bottom up- ancles, knees, hips in that order. also try making super short radius skidded cross under turns to get a feel for the motion. dont be afraide to experiment.
  25. i have two words: yellow lenses. I got a set for my frames last season and wont ride in flat light without them. even on the darkest days they still give enough definition to the mine-bumps to be able to carve a nice line at the end of the day
