  1. Hey Carvedog, and others, I'll be in SV from the 8th-15th. I'll really only have time to ride on the 12 th and 13th, and the morning of the 14th since I'm working for Special Olympics on the other days. Will have the family in tow, but if you're on the mountain and see a new carver you don't recognize stop and say hi. I'm sure we can fit some turns in somewhere. Brett

    Worst Beer

You guys post some drinkable beers compared to the cheap crap we've purchased for parties/roadtrips in the past. The worst of the bunch : Grainbelt, Pig's Eye, And one time, we bought 12 cases of something called Burger (had an umlaat above the u) at $5.99 a case for a weeklong canoe trip. Almost dumped it in the river but felt sorry for the fish.
  3. Sorry I didn't get those dates up for you guys. They posted them the Thursday before the first series race.

    Mes '09

You guys need to post that hoverboard pic in the main forum. Tell them all its a new kind of board with camber in the nose and reverse camber in the middle and no camber in the tail and watch all the sparks fly
  5. Hey guys, I'd like to post the Tyrol Series, but they still haven't listed the dates. I'll be sure to get on Mgt and see when they are. Hope to see you all at MES if I can swing it. P.S. Brent and I had a good winter break camp with a some committed riders who've transitioned to hardboot set-ups. Maybe in a by next year we'll be able to have MN-WI showdown
  6. Not sure who it is, but it looks a lot like a kid that I've run into at some of the Tyrol series. I think he's from Illinois? I could be totally wrong too.
  7. yes....the Wii fit balance board can be used with the Wii version. Search Youtube...there's already a bunch of videos of this out there.
  8. http://www.novemberboards.com/ This is a small maker in Minnesota. Nice looking boards a lot like Arbors, and it seems that he knows what he's doing. A number of the BOLers here in the Midwest talked to him about construction and what ride characteristics they like as he was looking at making race boards too. He finally decided that he couldn't justify the costs for the small number he'd sell. Not a huge fan of the website, but I think it fits what you are looking for and at a decent price. Here's another site with some better pictures of his boards. http://www.wood-veneers.com/gallery39.htm
  9. Skis at 2 and boarding at 4. I have to qualify both of these as I have been teaching both snowsports for 18 years. My son was motivated (not so much at 2) to hang out with me and my wife on the hill so he really paid attention to the lessons. Even at 2 he learned, but we only went out for about 30 minutes at a time with lots of resting and hot chocalate in the lodge in between sessions. He asked to try snowboarding at 4, and we did it, but he mostly skied that season because he could already do most of the hill on his skis and loved racing and running gates. Last year he really wanted to board more so he took a bunch of private lessons with a friend of mine who's an instructor (its amazing how young they quit listening to their parents:o) and really started to pick it up and can do linked turns down gentle blues now. It had more to do with his strength and coordination development than desire or teaching methods. He picked it up younger than most other kids I know, but he has been strong and coordinated for his age. Best advice, give it a try if you want, but if you want to have them be able to follow you for awhile instead of being on the bunny hill I'd go with skis first. The bonus is they learn the rules of the hill and how to use the different types of lifts which are definitely easier to use on skis. I don't want to get in a pissing match, but I definitely agree with the people who point out the growth patterns of kids. They just can't do some things until their muscles and nerves mature a bit. There are always exc eptions to this, but few and far between. My background includes 12 years doing orthopaedic research (bone growth and healing) and my wife is a PT specializing in Neuro cases (instructor as well).
  10. Just got back from Florida. Now I'm ready for some snow and my next trip in Feb. I'll be sure to drop you a line or call when we head out there.
  11. If you're in Milwaukee the best bootfitter is at Les Moise. They have a shop on Bluemound Rd. and one a little north of the city (whitefish bay maybe?). I can't remember the name of the bootfitting guy, but they're probably the best bootfitters we have around here. Not sure if they carry the Head snowboard boots, but I know they have the ski boots and I've heard the fit is almost the same. You could at least get an idea if the Head's work for you. As far as finding the other brands you're probably stuck with online sales.
  12. If you work in Stoughton you might want to check out Tyrol Basin as well. Its about 20 minutes from Stoughton over in Mt. Horeb. We have a big contingent of hardbooters there. You could see a lot of different types of boots and bindings, and maybe even try some out if anyone has the same shoe size. We also have a beer league on Monday nights like the one Midwestspeedster mentioned at Alpine, only ours in Mondays. Alpine would be much closer to home for you, but riding in a race league will make you better, and give you a chance to c heck out gear. You'll probably also run into some gear hounds who can hook you up with used boards.
  13. Thanks. I'm sure we'll try to figure out a way to get that going. Basically, the numbers for us are going to double this year and Brent wanted to grow the program and didn't think he could do it on his own. This year will be kind of an experiment for us as I had a lot of other comitments already so won't have tons of time, but we hope to get something good going over the next few years. The G-team always looks solid, I just hope we can be half of that one day. :)
  14. Cool. Thanks for the reply. I'll drop another line here once it gets closer to the dates.
  15. Will do. I checked their website the other day and they didn't have it up yet. I'll let you know as soon as I do.
  16. LOL.....Alderman was the guy who got me on a hard board waaaayyyyy back in 95. We seldom race against each other anymore but sometimes I win and sometimes he wins. I always claim that he has more money to spend on the new gear ;) Anyway, glad to hear that other people like to come to Tyrol as well. We always try to treat people well. Maybe this year we'll see who's faster for real since I'm joining Brent on the high school coaching staff
  17. It'd be a hike for you, but we have a good number of events at Tyrol, including Sat/Sun Nastar where we convince them to set stubbies now and then. We also have aMonday night adult race league with 2 snowboard teams in it. We race skier gates about 4 times and stubbies twice during the season. Other than USASA its hard to find stubby sets.
  18. HEy guys, I'll be heading out to Sun Valley from Feb. 7-25. I'll be out there with Special Olympics doing some clinics and pacesetting for their World Games, but expect to get a few days of riding in after its done. I think we'll be on Dollar Mt. for the events, but am wondering what to hit on my days off, nad if anyone else will be around at that time? My wife and son will also be out there cruising around all week while I'm working. I've heard its a great place for wide open runs with few people. thanks for any replies,\ Brett
  19. That CJD case made the papers down here as well, but all of the experts pretty much said it most likely wasn't the venison. Its still hard to tell what the real deal is. I don't do any waterfowl hunting, but I've noticed that the bucks here are following the does already too. Not all out chasing like in the thick of the rut, but definitely more interested than they should be tis time of year. I'm looking forward to pheasant season opening in 2 weeks. My dog is 4 years old now and really knows what he's doing now. We seldom go out and don't get one or two. Definitely let me know when you hit Madison. If I'm in town I'll get you out at Tyrol, and there's a bunch of other carvers here as well who would ride. If you happened to be here on a Monday you could run some gates with us too :)
  20. Yup..rememebr you all right. Sounds ,like your season is off to a good start :) I've not been overly concerned with the CWD problem, and have been hunting in the middle of the zone for a few years now. I also happen to work at the University's Veterinary School and some of my fellow researchers have worked with prion diseases. In CWD's case its pretty much impossible for a human to contract it and the majority consensus is that it doesn't transmit to humans like Scrappie in sheep. That being said, I've passed up a deer that didn't look healthy to me, and like Al I do all of my own butchering and processing, including sausage. As long as you don't cut into the spine, head, or lymph nodes you put the risk of infection at almost zero, and if you don't cut open bones and expose the marrow you are that much better off. As far as numbers of deer with it, I can't really say beyond the DNR's numbers as I don't think I've ever run across one that definitely had it, and none of the people I know have had one test positive yet either. I do wish people would stop feeding them and using bait piles as it is the main way of transmitting it with the close contact from saliva, but some hunters and backyard enthusiasts just don't seem to get it. Anyway, I can't get out again until the weekend.....good luck with your season.
  21. Keep us informed. I really liked riding Welch once or twice a season, especially at the MWES.
  22. Saw 7 does in an hour last night. I actually have to shoot one so I can "earn a Buck" tag. Not a big deal to me as I use a lot of venision throughout the year and try to get 3-4 deer a season. Unfortunately they came out so late that I could hardly see them even though they were only 10 yds away. Decided I could get one a different day.
  23. I've been once and saw a bunch of deer, bu8t no shots I liked. Sadly, my dad shot a nice 8 pointer, but hit it just back of the ribs. I trailed it for about 1000 yards and ended up losing the trail in some tall grass in a swamp. we did the whole grid thing for about 5 hours the next day but the grass is so thick and tall I could have walked within 5 yards of it and never saw it. We both feel horrible as it was still a killing shot, just not quick enough :(
  24. Thats cool. My extended family is all in Wausau so I ride granite now and then too. Not sure who has any used gear in that area, but be sure to drop a line or post to the ride board and other carvers will probably hook up for some turns. Seeing other people ride and getting feedback is a great way to improve.
  25. HEllo Geist, Where in WI are you racing at? I ride and race at Tyrol, as does a good number of harbooters in all age ranges. We often have used gear for sale, and I keep a board or two around for people to try things out on. If you're in the Madison area drop a line and there's a bunch of people that can hook you up.
