ike
I recently bought a used Oxygen Proton. I don't know what to call the shape of the tail. From surfing, i am familiar with "fish tails" and i noticed on deep powder boards, they have fish tails, but this is more of a circlular cut-out. what is the name of this, and what is it for? any answers? -ike
AaronG
What the heck are those kind of bindings doing on a SL board. Instead of worrying about the name the tail shape, which is a shark bite tail, you need to get yourself some TD2s, or Cateks on that thing lickety split. Yard Sale
No, he's just using really extreme binding angles.
philistine
I think that was a magnificent photoshop job. Are the bindings you have on it now freeride pros? If so, you could sell those for some new plate bindings.
bobdea
I have gone to a round tail on all my boards, so long as the builder is willing to do it for me the only tails that made a difference as far as alpine gear goes were the splits such as sims burners for pow rides swallow tails are cool
SITO
Reading On the carvers almanac , this tail shape on Oxigen works very fine in all types of snow condition, It'slike a glue. Oxigen had this tail shape until 04/05 season Before in 05/06 the tail have been modified as normal shape, straight. Sito

mnovak
To answer the question, I think most people call it a tail with a notch in the center or a notched tail. Don't know if it actually makes a difference. Seems to me its how square the tail is that matters. I have the same board -- different year. Cheers,
Kirk
I noticed absolutely no difference in riding response from any of my flat tail race decks to riding the Oxygen Proton. I honestly think it's more of a styling/aesthetics thing. A split-tail (Burner) - now THAT is an entirely different ball game! LOVE THOSE! ike
mabye this year I'll get to find out how it performs. Only got to ride it once last year :(
Pow
i havnt compared the sharkbite to a flat bottom, but i can tell you the idea behind the design is to allow more torsional flex. it seems to make sense to me, especially if you have a stiff, solid aluminum tailprotector. I can even see a cracking issue if you didnt have the cutout, although im sure the amount of riding needed to cause this issue would result in completely destroying your edges p-tex and topsheet before you got around to cracking the tail. I'll probably be riding this board for the rest of my life unless it breaks or something.
