pow4ever
it's all about the weight (50lb) in my travel experience. People at the counter doesn't seems to care about luggage dimension: I was able to take 3 boards(no binding, bunch of outerwear) easily. You can always pay for more checked luggage or overage but i am el-cheap-O.
MNSurfer
I'd say two, if one has bindings. Sort or related, but here's something that I've starting getting razzed about. I have a ski company branded boot bag, which I love. But it's shaped like a duffel. I've traveled with this for years, as part of a skis+boot bag combo, without a problem. For the last two years, I've been given the business about this "not being a boot bad". Even though there's boots in there, and it's a ski company! This has been mostly on Delta, but Frontier wasn't having any of it, and I had to pay $50.
Neil Gendzwill
Don't know about Southwest but I have never had anyone look in the bag flying United, Air Canada or Westjet. Most of the time they don't even weigh it. I'd say 3 is the practical limit given the 50 lb maximum. Chouinard
It's on their website. Flown Southwest twice to Denver. 2 bags per traveler + carry-on+personal bag that fits under the seats. Allowed to substitute one container of gear [over-sized snow sport equipment exception] for one bag. Must be less than 50 lbs or there is an up-charge. Supposed to be able to pair a boot bag with the gear bag at no additional charge but have not tried.

demi9od
I managed 4 boards, two with bindings attached, in my Thule roller board bag on Southwest. Was carrying for three friends without snowboard bags.
lowrider
Not sure about other air lines but in Canada i was advised that unless your skis or board were in a hard case no insurance is available for damages. Even as late as last week i wasn't seeing many hard case in the over sized baggage claim area.
