The time has come to upgrade my trusty S5is digital camera (now 7 years old, shock horror). It's been absolutely awesome and I've carted it all over the world with me,and as it still works fine I'll keep it for things like biking and day hiking trips.(If it gets trashed biking, well, them's the breaks, I'd rather break that than a new one).But - what to replace it with? I'm not a DSLR girl - I travel a lot and DSLR is just too big and clunky when you're trying to get around, and I like to walk around foreign cities without calling too much attention to myself. One of the things I loved about the Canon was that I could leave it in auto, and it would take great pictures without any input from me. I did play with the manual controls every now and then - some arty longer exposure stuff and ramping up the ISO for indoor, but that's the exception rather than the rule. I use the zoom extensively, and I much prefer taking my pictures through a viewfinder rather than a using a screen. I would really appreciate something that's better in lower light and indoor than the Canon was though.Looking online at stuff hasn't turned up much. Everything looks much the same to me, spec wise, and none of the local big box stores have much selection of mid-range cameras (all our specialist camera stores have pretty much gone belly up, so that's not much help). I'd be happy to pay up to $800 for the right camera ... but before I do I thought I'd see if anyone had any recommendations to share.I'm not in a hurry - so I'm wondering if maybe waiting and seeing what mirrorless options come up in the next year might be a good idea.Let me know what you've got ... I haven't used it, but based on reviews I'd buy it in a heartbeat at the 500-600 $US current prices. The successor a6100 (?) rumored coming out early next year so prices may go even lower. cheers! Hilux Posted December 3, 2015 Report Share Posted December 3, 2015 Not too familiar with your camera but from what your describing for use the Olympus PEN series is quite outstanding quality in compact form. A good compromise between full blown DSLR and smaller P&S. My friend bought one last year (can't remember what model) to take on long hikes (winter and summer), bike trips etc and it has stood up well to tripping. The colour rendering is very good without too much (or any) mucking about in post editing. The menu is a bit finicky to navigate but once you get used to it he said it's fine. The newer models might be different too. Also check out their ZX series. Worth exploring anyhow. I have also heard great things about the Sony's in this range but mostly from online reviews. And it might have to be sooner rather than later, given that I spent all weekend taking pictures at a Crossfit competition and cursing at the slow sensor speed on the S5. I got to play with a Canon T3 and that confirmed that it's definitely too big for what I want, although its owner was taking some killer shots with it. That Sony looks interesting though, and the online reviews are great. Plus I can find it here for about the same price as the Panasonic with two lenses. Hmmm. Jack M Posted December 23, 2015 Report Share Posted December 23, 2015 For a portable interchangeable lens camera, I would look no further than the Sony a6000. APS-C is better than m4/3. For a pocket camera, Sony RX100-III or IV or the Canon G7X is the same size and has the same sensor but a slightly longer lens.
