Beautiful days Saturday and Sunday. Traffic was rather heavy after lunch and called its day.

We have a confirmed sighting of Jolson!

Want to reemphasize bigwavedave's post. Spirit Mountain lift tickets are on sale for the 2012-13 season

at $139 (plus tax) through April 15, then the price starts to rise. These are also good for this season for

the month of March. This price is for everybody, even current pass holders.

Lots of first aid practice on Saturday; by the time I got to be out on the hill, things were scraped off just about everywhere. Sunday was much better; traffic was lighter and BWD was still out at 2:30 when I started and got a couple of runs with him. Later in the evening I had Cinder Snapper all to myself for some fast turns.

Sorry to disappoint all you sun worshippers, but the forecast for the week looks more promising for a little (much needed) surface refresh. Contemplating a road trip to either Indianhead or Lutsen on Thursday. Patrol duty at Spirit on Friday.

Hope someone gets out to play today....

I'm all over that starting at 4pm today.....

Russ, I think Lutsen sounds like the best call for Thursday. I just heard a forecast for up to 1ft at Lutsen when this all over.

Sounds like bigwave and I are headed up the shore on Thursday - if anyone else can get the day off let us know - we'll have room in the car.

So, Paul Huttner was up at Lutsen skiing on Sunday, reports that conditions were marvolous, posted some nice pics and,...he has a nice forecast of potential big snow headed our way this Sunday...Says there're NOAA "hurrricane hunter" aircraft checking into the approaching storm off the Pacific coast! http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/updraft/

It's probably all just be MPR elite climate ideology psuedo science hype, but I want to believe. I've been planning a trip up the U.P. (Bohemia) this weekend, so keeping my fingers crossed.

This forecast puts the Sunday storm headed for Duluth and the Thurs snow going more south.

Hey, just noticed that I finally graduated from groomer grommet to carver extraordinaire! Oh how I wish I were a Lord of the Ruts.

Spirit ended up getting 3-4 inches of heavy, wet snow; pretty chopped up by the time I got out at 3:30 (but still better than what we've had of late). Took a couple of runs with Ken before I had a patrol call.....he was having a hard time deciding where to go - Fourpipe or Sourdough Sam or home to unwrap the package Fedex brought from Sean!

I stayed 'til 8 - later in the evening the temperature dropped and the snow was drier. Looking good for the coming weekend.

Bigwave and I made our much anticipated trek up the north shore to Lutsen today.....looks like they got the same 2-4 inches of wet snow we saw in the Twin Ports on Tuesday; groomed out but a bit chunky today. Despite the flat light, we got to try all the gear we had with us and left Caribou and Bridge Run (and a few others) well trenched up.

Took a few runs with Ken early last evening - he was like a kid in a candy shop with his new Donek! I left after about an hour when the increasing East wind made it difficult to get downslope....

I'll be out saving lives both Saturday and Sunday mornings; Ken mentioned that he'll be out both days as well.

We got 8-10 inches of snow (with a very high moisture content) from this week's storm. I went out last evening, but everything was packed down to a hard, sometimes icy, surface. This morning, the groom was soft, but even by 11am, high traffic areas were starting to get that hard packed characteristic.

So the take away, for the next few days anyways, is start early.

NB - I've got some spare passes; send me a PM if you see this message and I can save you a few bucks.

Saw a video last week on BOL of the first snowboard in US circa 1917. Found a link to the article in transworld snowboarding for the rest of the story...

Rockered no less...

They also reference a Jeremy Jones journey to Turkey a while back where he found a remote mountain village where the locals had used a very similar device going back 150 years. Video link for the Turkish snowboarders doesn't seem to work any more.

Last night when I checked the weather, the forecast was for scattered snow showers with less than an inch of accumulation during the night, then scattered snow showers with no accumulation today.......instead there was about 4 inches of new when I got to the hill this morning and those big, fat, dry flakes drifted down ALL DAY LONG! When I got home tonight, I had about 10 inches of light fluffy snow in my driveway. Not a great day for carving, but a great day to be outside with a lot of other folks sharing the same vibe. Hooked up with Ken (first on his freeride deck, then in hardboots) for a couple of runs; also took a few runs with Dan (nelsonboat) and his spouse before I got called off to save some lives.

Still lightly snowing now; if you're planning to come out tomorrow, I'd put something a bit beefier in the car - it might not be the best day for those razor sharp, skinny race boards.

The fresh snow brought out some interesting gear today:
