Hmm. Any possibility to do it online for people, like me, outside of Boston?

Glad youre healing, btw.

I hope this -could- be useful for my racing career?

Thanks

Lee

PS thanks for droppin' a miniscule note on Madd Mike hoppin' on the plane. I'm a bit anxious to get that board, considering vail's opening this Friday and I'd like to tear it up with my be-Madd 158!

LeeW, aren't you like in alpine snowboarding central? I find it hard to believe that there isn't anyone local that might be able to help you out.

Actually I'm just making my bid for JG to come to the Bay Area *instead* :D

We have a lot of carvers out here, and a couple of slalom skateboarders too.

Let's say that I'd like to help out John Gilmour (I've broken my tibula and fibula and it suck ass recover from it). I got my eyes on Ski Club of Vail -- I'm quite impressed with the converstations w/ Ben Boyd. Unfortunely I dont have the 950 dollars to come up, for my "master's" goal to get conditioned to it. I'm more than far willing to help out John Gilmour, if we could do it online or something like that.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge, but I didn't get anything past the few sentence? What is the Ski Club of Vail, what ist he "master's" goal? Conditioned to it? Is that some type of certification or racing title?

I broke my tibia/fibula last season too (a very stupid way.. but at the end of the season :) ) I worked so hard... I started leg pressing my left (broken) leg at 20lbs, and 7 months later I am now at 200lbs, 400lbs for both legs with 10 reps! I hope that by the time I hit the slopes, I will be a machine (i'm part metal now anyway) and be able to do 30 reps of 400. I think I'm pretty knowledgeable at setting stance up for my style, but I'm sure I could learn a lot (only able to do it if it's online though... or in Montreal for some reason :) )

LeeW how'd you break it? Was it from torque or snap? Did you get the titanium bar?

I'm trying to get my body back in good shape before Deaf Olympics in park city of '07 as well as '06 try out for alpine snowboard team at telluride. Hence get my body conditioned. plus im a bit old -- 32 and i'd fit in more into master's program, with some slight modifications to the program for competition. I broke my big bone ( i get confused with fibula and tibula and i broke both of 'em at seperate time ) of my lower leg before I got any chance to race at sweden in '03 for the Deaf Olympics alpine team. I did so well during the try out on soft boots and a burton PJ 7 asym board in '02. Got 2nd place in G.S. and could have got 2nd too in SL (but wiped out on 2nd heat).

I busted it on Will-Garrow-Customized Rossi 184 in the back bowl of Vail. Broke it real good. Was carving and saw a group of ski school on my right on groomed run, and took a left on a blind-groom run. Bad idea. It was moguls afterwards. So -SNAP- went my bone. Couldn't do the jamaican hopping run then, and now i can. woo!

1 or 2 weeks after TG is fine for me. 2 is probably a little better. Slight preference for weekends, but weekday-evenings are fine too.

Are you putting a list together of people interested in the Boston venue? (hint hint, nudge nudge?) To email/phone time, date, and place specifics?

Does BU have trampolines that won't be destroyed by landing "directly into a low-slung carve"? Or would they have a tramp-board too? I'm a little confused.

Not bad 39 posts for only being up for a day. I guess there is demand.

i wouldn't mind touring around the USA to do this if there was enough demand...but until then perhaps internet video is the next best thing. There is nothing like being there though- it makes it easier to guage how much freedom of movement and muscular support you have for each joint.

Anyhow I think I should try to do some sort of online streaming thing which I hope we could then put in a bunch of mini movies.

I can host them on several different sites as well.

I've got a Sony top of the line 3 chip mini dv video camera that has a firewire output....but alas no way to edit the footage. Which BTW I'm selling to hopefully get the newest Sony hi def camera. twice hte price and twice the resolution hopefully- good for digital zooming in on those "off center corner frame" shots.

I was hoping for December 13th. But I am partly waiting to see when some of the people with their New Madd boards have their gear because a firm nosed deck takes a different riding approach.

If any of you are opposed to waiting to meet up with BUST (Boston University Snowboard Team) let me know- but I think it would be a good addittion to have some local college kids in there with us- and at least they would immediately have some people to carve with.

BUST also always has some good discounts on stuff so perhaps you guys might benefit from that, and they are always looking for ways to help raise cash for their club.

This is pure ES material. If SES is a possibility I will commit to the Dialed-in and Conditioning clinics. I'm thinking you could get others to commit as well. Could be a lucritive venture. There *will* be a few carvers there.

Video would be nice, but a personal apearance would yield the best results.

December 13th sounds fine to me. So long as a definite location and schedule, etc. are posted ahead of time.

Local, College-age, Carvers? No problem waiting to meet up with them. I happen to be one myself, just...er...not in college :p

As always, keep us all informed.

Email from BU-

I figure we will do this on Monday December 13th at 6:30 pm.

I'm still looking for the ideal location

JG

Hey John,

What's going on? Sounds like an awesome plan. Let me talk to the

other officers to see when would be the best time and day.

Where are you holding the clinic? I'm sure some of us would be down to

give you a hand, except none of us really race or carve. We all ride

freestyle/freeride boards.

I'll email you back soon about our availability.

It's nice to hear from you again.

John, my heart jumped when I seen, "Get Dialed In" ! That is the name of a video I found when starting to board (soft), and recommend it to any beginner!

Ever since I've become interested in Alpine Boarding (last season) I've been praying for 'someone' to come out with an 'instructional' video, that would help me like 'GDI' did ! Unfortunately I'm one of those that 'need' to see it and then FEEL it (not very good at reading and visualization) but watching something over and over and trying it has helped.

I'm in NJ, but if the timing was right, I'd make the trip to Mass / Conn for the seminar.

I just WISH someone had a GOOD Alpine Snowboard Instructional Video !! ( A real video, not a 30-60 sec. clip )

I also had that video.

A good start. A good general view on things.

I'll go into a ton more detail. A lot on weight transfer and for instance when to pressure the bottom of your boots and when to pressure the sides.

What I'm teaching in this clinic is more instructional.

There are a few issues to deal with. In getting adjusted properly.

1. Binding and boot clearance

2. Stance width and cant

3. Setting up proper body angles and making sure you are within the middle range and comfort range of your joint range.

4. Stance angle (usually dictated by board and stance width)

5. Binding Height (front Vs rear)

6. Boot offset (front Vs rear)

7. Boot Cant (front Vs rear)

8. Boot flex range (front Vs rear)

9. Tightness of flex springs (front Vs rear)

10. Binding tightness (front Vs rear)

11. Reducing/eliminating boot pain.

We'll even talk about ....boring.....socks.

You see .... it is more important that you be able to pressurize the edge correctly than ANYTHING else. It's all the snow "sees" to effect a turn.

I'm not just setting your bindings- I'll be showing you what to look for and feel and how to verify that you got the adjustment correct. You'll have to be very aware of Exactly where your foot is inside your boot liner (cuz I don't have X-ray vision).

You'll all have different boots and bindings (and of course I haven't adjusted everything in the industry- so I'll show you what we are trying to accomplish and you'll be turning the screws. LEARN BY DOING, not watching)

I also want to do a Soft boot carving clinic- but that is far more involved to do. On average to EXACTLY dial a set of high performance full featured soft bindings in.... I would guess you have to make over 25 adjustments. Why? Because sometimes adjusting one thing affects the PREVIOUS adjustment you made on another part- so often you have to go back and do it again. Also since soft boot bindings flex you have to take the flex of every binding model and the weight/power/riding style of the rider into consideration.

To get a little warmed up I dialed in Ethan Jerome last nice- on softies Drake Bindings, Salomon Malamutes, ona Never Summer Premier T5. Great "all terrain" and "softboot carving" set up. He'll likely feel odd for a few runs/days until his riding style adapts to the set up and he starts to begin to coordinate multiple muscle groups that before acted independently.

So once you are dialed for Soft boots you have to learn an entire new body dynamic for turning -similar to Vin Quenevilles and my style of soft boot riding. That takes about 1-3 days on the slopes IF you stay focused. It doesn't take that long to ride that way in soft boots provided you already are dialed in your hard boot set up and are flexible enough to set the body angles needed.

If you want to get dialed for Soft boots- it would be a great help if you already attended the hard boot clinic. Likely I'll do the soft boot clinic with BUST (BOSTON UNIVERSITY SNOWBOARD TEAM) or with Wellesley College Snowboard club after The New Year (Maybe we will do a joint meeting?)

Hard Boot carving - Get Dialed In. Monday 6:30 Dec. 13th Boston. (still trying to coordinate with BU)

Get Dialed In is a basic instructional video released in the early 1990s featuring some of the staff from Snowbird. It is NOT a hardboot alignment video. It's an old-school video, but has some good tips for beginners and fun vintage action footage.

You sometimes see copies listed on EBay (none currently) and, if you like, can pick up a copy here.

Great snow at Vail, BTW. Hope it's snowing where you are!

As John mentioned he dialed in my softie set up for the season.. . I didn't get home until midnite! John's knowledge of the physics of snowboarding is...unbelievable...with his now long hair he looks like the mad scientist of snowboarding...John I am gonna bring a lab coat with some blood stains for you to wear during the clinic! Given his experiences with snowboarding, slalom skate boarding, and rehabing himself he has a good knowledge of the biomechanics of this sport. I can assure everyone that they will benefit from his advice. Before he got banged up last year he spent some time with me on the hill and it made a HUGE difference in my riding.

ncermak, sorry I don't have the video here to see who made it ( I lent it out ). I think I got it off of the web though, look up "Get Dialed In".

And yes, it is 'NOT' an Alpine video (sorry if I mislead anyone), it's an older video and takes you from beginner to intermediate, and it is Great.

When (if) I get it back I'll post who made it, if you still need the info.
