Jack M
Study says ski areas exaggerate snowfall http://updates.pressherald.mainetoday.com/updates/study-says-ski-areas-exaggerate-snowfall
NMU Alpine Boarder
In other news, fishing resorts have been found to lie occasionally about their catches
Fastskiguy
Clearly the most earth shattering conclusion ever Don't you wish you could do something like this for "work"? Dartmouth.....
Mike T
I've see the OR/Tahoe resorts report lower than actual numbers so as to not scare people away from driving up, too.
crucible
On our local hill Grouse Mountain, I take the posted snowfall report on their website as the first point of discussion on the true nature of the hill's snowpack. I find that the much more accurate method is to call the restaurant and bar at the top of the mountain and to ask a bartender or server to look out the window and tell me exactly what they see... it's WAY more accurate. Puddy Tat
What the snow phone said, "We got 10cm of fresh snow overnight..." What the snow phone forgot to add, "...behind the lodge where it fell off the roof."
BobD
I like the description "packed powder", which can be anything from a carver's wet dream, to "should have brought your ice skates". BobD
Jack M
yup. also you can divide trail count by 3. every trail has an upper and lower, some have middles, and then there are crosscuts.
John E
I think the local news stations here are in bed with the ski resorts. When the mountains get any snow, the newscasters are fawning about all the new powder. When they don't say anything, its best to assume it sucks. I don't believe anything on the local news regarding the amount & quality of the snow. However, it seems to me that the new snow depth reported by my local area is usually pretty accurate. The term "packed powder" is almost meaningless.
b0ardski
packed powder is an oxymoron when powder gets packed, be it by wind, skiers or machines, the structure of the crystals change. This is not a bad thing when it changes into chalky cord:eplus2: Adding up the daily reported snow depth never equates to snow pack depth
Ian M
I find that the much more accurate method is to call the restaurant and bar at the top of the mountain and to ask a bartender or server to look out the window and tell me exactly what they see... it's WAY more accurate. Nice! I worked one winter at Guest Services at the resort in Fernie, B.C. and took special delight in being TOTALLY HONEST when people called our number instead of the snow phone number. My boss tried to dissuade me, but every single caller told me that they appreciated the honesty.
