Keenan Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 So I keep seeing pictures of the Coloradans riding this season on newer gear (go ahead, rub it in). I'm interested to hear how much of a snow base most people need in order to put away the rock boards and break out the good stuff. For me, it's 40" lower mountain. Quote
crucible Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 In Vancouver BC, usually after Christmas....back out after Easter. Quote
BlueB Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 A soon as I don't see any exposed stuff. Cruel, I know... But purpose of those nice boards is to go out and play, not to sit in the garage. If I brake it, well, another reason to buy more boards ;) Quote
inkaholic Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Most of CO is rockin' an 18" base. For the most part that is "tougher" manmade snow with some of mother natures own sweetness thrown into the mix. Last weekend there was a small (12'x12') section at the rollover of one run that had signs of being thin. We kept to the other side of the run and had no issues, only fun. These days the LCI doesn't seem to grab rock boards. We usually use smaller SCR in the early season while there is little terrain to be shared by too many. Once more terrain opens up the larger SCR come out. Actually last season both D.T. and Big Mario purchased "rock" boards and I haven't seen them out since last season right after purchase. Ink Quote
Keenan Posted November 17, 2009 Author Report Posted November 17, 2009 I think there are so many skiers and boarders in CO that all of the rocks have been buffed to smooth perfection. Around here I'm pretty sure the ski patrol goes out at night and paints the rocks white. Quote
Allee Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Reminds me of opening day at Kicking Horse 2 years ago. Freezing cold, 3 feet of snow over the previous 2 weeks - and one of our friends, first day out on brand new skis, hucks off the side of the trail and core shots both of them ... Quote
inkaholic Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 I think there are so many skiers and boarders in CO that all of the rocks have been buffed to smooth perfection. This is why so many jibbers are allowed on the slope together the first few week. Ink Quote
philfell Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 All board are potentially a rock board.......:) Quote
b0ardski Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 All board are potentially a rock board.......:) +1 I always say I'll use an old board early season but 9 times out of 10 I break out the new stick/s on 2' of cover and go mining. I've hit rocks with new boards in february so its really a crap shoot even with good coverage. to quote Warren Miller talking about early season cover at alpental; 6" of new over 7" inch rocks:freak3: Quote
tripine Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 What is this thing you call "lower mountain"? Quote
b0ardski Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 What is this thing you call "lower mountain"? That's where you park the car:lol: Quote
Softcarver Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 All board are potentially a rock board.......:) :biggthumpAmen to that. Just an excuse to buy something newer. If I can't see grass the rock board goes in the closet till Spring. We buy our boards to have fun so go out there and use them. Quote
Dave ESPI Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 ugh.... even after I put them away, I manage to "find" a way to procreate more dings in my better rides to replace the rock bait for the next season... Sharks love me timbers ARRRRRR ! Quote
boarderboy Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 The Rock Board is almost never put away. Light frost... fresh dew... by God, I slide!! BB Quote
