  1. Not so sure yet how important it will end up being. But it's value will certainly depend on having other friends with one. I was expecting to use it for navigation too. That's what I wasn't sure of. I've only been able to find one hands-on review of the 6110 Navigator and the N95 GPS functionality, and it said it was pretty good. But I was curious to see how it compared to dedicated GPS devices, wondering if a combined phone/GPS would be better (price, quality, convenience, etc.) than separate units for each. Thanks for the info ! 'later...
  2. Does anybody here have any experience with the new breed of cellphones with GPS receivers ? I'm shopping for a new cellphone after my RAZR got soaked with pool water when my waterproof box decided to stop being waterproof sometime during a 1-hour 50-foot dive (SCUBA) in the SCUBA training pool. Believe it or not, after drying it out for 2 days the phone actually worked perfectly. But then, 2 weeks later, the buttons stopped working, and then worked intermittently, etc. The repair shop wants to charge $225 to fix it because of the corrosion inside it. Screw that. I'd really love to be able to send over my GPS coordinates to, or receive the coordinates from the person I'm talking to, whenever one of us says "So, where are you ?". Especially since I'll be moving to a new town soon. So far the only phones I can find that have GPS are the Nokia N95 and the 6110 Navigator. Anyways, I was considering the Nokia 6110 Navigator until I found out it couldn't charge over USB. Thanks. 'later...
'later...
  4. Or sometimes, a little more than a nickle: http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/comm-oddities/2007/05/missing_pants_leads_to_big_sui.html I should mention that he's had a change of heart, and is now only suing the dry cleaners for $54million. Such a nice guy. 'later...
  5. Yeah, it's still on the table as a next career choice, along with becoming a researcher/teacher in some science. But it's a few years out still. It's something I would do in about 4 years, when the next recession hits and I lose my job, as has happened in the last 2 recessions. That's when I'm planning on making a career change. Right now I'm going to stick it out in tech because it's hot now and will be for about another 3-4 years, and it pays really well. In the meantime, I have a 1000-page book on pastry fundamentals and 2 cake books to tie me over. :D 'later...
  6. I daydream about carving all the time. I believe it helps my technique -- I'm a staunch believer in the "mind controls the body" philosophy. 'later...
  7. Congrats Justin !! As for being yelled at, the culinary world sounds alot like the TV world. They yell at you like crazy, and then at the end of it all, congratulate you on doing a great job. That happened to me a few years ago when I took a week off work to volunteer at the Canadian Nationals and Honda Element tour snowboard comps, where I worked with the TV crew as a result of my work background. I don't mind it, as long as they're not doing it maliciously and I understand why they're doing it, as was the case with the TV crew at the races (although I only found out after the race, and not before the race , which would have been preferable. :) One thing I do like about those kind of people, though, is that they pretty much lay all their cards on the table. Are you doing more culinary studying in NH ? 'later...
  8. Hey all, I'm looking for a room to rent or a fully furnished apartment for July 1st. I'll be moving to Calgary around the end of June or early July. The original plan is to head over there with a few suitcases, find a place to stay, find a job, find an unfurnished apartment and move my stuff over there from Montreal. However, if I'm happy with the roommate deal, then I'll stick with it. What I'm looking for: close to the C-Train, a supermarket and pharmacy at least 9ft by 10ft, in the case of a room for rent a good kitchen. It doesn't have to be as good as in a family house, but should be better than the average apartment kitchen, which are usually clearly designed for cooking little more than eggs, toast and Ramen noodles. :) roommate who doesn't mind silence every now and then. I'm an introvert, so I can't yak my head off constantly and I can't listen to other people yak their heads off either. roommate that is either considerate and respectful or enjoys getting smacked in the head  If you have an apartment or room for rent that fits, or know someone who does, please give me a shout: sweettoother AT gmail Thanks-O-Bunch !! 9. I did the the superhero quiz and ended up being Robin, the superpussy. 10. I did my part a couple of months ago. Internet radio is the only radio I listen to and I listen to it all day. Gotta have my Groove Salad in the morning !! 'later...

  13. That's why I don't argue with too many people, despite really enjoying arguing. In some cases I don't talk to certain people because I know we'll get in some kind of argument. Making it worse, is that those type of people that I do meet tend to not have the patience or attention span to listen to what I'm saying, and usually cut me off just before the end of the first sentence. Hence my preference for non-realtime, written communication like e-mail or message boards. :) Ah, that's what it's called ! I always wanted to know the real name for it. I always referred to it as the College Student Protester Method. Talk about timing. I just saw an episode of Family Guy last night, which covered this very topic. It was the one where one of the characters (I believe she's the mom. I don't watch the show, so I'm guessing) is running in some election. It was pretty funny. 'later...
  14. In that case, I suggest you stay away from A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. It's an incredibly easy book to read, but it's non-stop misery. And he's very descriptive with the violence in the story. I got up to about half the book (it's a 700-page book, so I still managed to read quite a bit :) ), and then stopped. That was about 2 years ago. Despite cries of being pussy by my ultimate-book-geek best friend who recommended it to me, I still haven't picked it up. If I ever get out of this semi-depressive state and get back my thick coat of optimism, I'll pick it up again. I'm still extremely surprised that book was so hugely popular and award-winning. Apparently the ending is really nice. 'later...
  15. That entire line (SP3, SP4 and SP5) had the wing. I use the SP5s. The wing really does work. 'later...
  16. Hmm, I don't think I have a preferred genre of books. I do have several half-finished books, though. Perhaps I'm more impatient than I think. :) Anyways, the 3 non-work related books at the top of my pile are: The Introvert Advantage -- Marty Olsen Laney Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man -- Susan Faludi Woody Allen and Philisophy -- Various, edited by Conard and Skobel that is, until I happen to come across some other book that catches my eye. 17. I've been checking out the schools in Vancouver. The pastry programs last between 6-10 months, depending on the school. just like you were working at a resto  I wonder if it's like that in bakeries and pastry shops. Pastry chefs seem much quieter and introverted. Nice ! I take it the mushrooms are meringue ? Did you get the black spots by torching it with a handheld torch or a broiler/salamander ? 'later...
  18. Got my butt whipped in the late 90s as well, mostly by telecomm. Lately I've been making money on ADSK, I wish they'd pay dividends. I was in PCU, but it got too volatile. Just bought RIO. Looking pretty good. Looking for another sector, though. Probably go small-cap. 'later...
  19. D'OH !! Busted. Yeah, I'm a CS major. Took 8 math courses at university too. :o I feel like an experienced chef I saw on TV that added salt instead of sugar to the sorbet he was making. Yeah, 2 cups of salt instead of sugar. Like the bumbling chef, I didn't test it before sending it out. :) I will now make a pathetic attempt at salvaging some kind of grace out of this by pointing out that I admitted it and never tried to cover it up by claiming it was a typo or I was busy watching TV or cooking. See, I told you it would be pathetic. :) Derf, when I saw Justin's reply, I immediately thought of the same show. One month to go and I'm outta here. Just in time to avoid the heat and humidity. 'later...

  21. I've been using CocoaBarry (now Barry-Callebaut after the merger of the two). It's what we used in the chocolate courses I took. I'll be buying Valrhona next, once I've used up all the chocolate I have now. 'later...
  22. I don't know, I never saw it. It looked pretty bad and the reviews were pretty bad so I never bothered going to see it. I doubt I'll rent either. I'm still traumatized by Daredevil. :) 'later...
  23. Here's an online petition to try to stop the proposal by U.S. chocolate manufacturers to replace cocoa butter in U.S-produced chocolate with vegetable fat substitutes: http://dontmesswithourchocolate.guittard.com/ Being a bit of a foodie (well, an aspiring one :) , at least ) and a lover of chocolate, I'm dead against it and thus made my voice heard. That reminds me, I still have 300g of white chocolate to use up before I move. 'later...
