  1. Stopped by for about an hour today 2-3 pm. slightly scraped with small loose piles on slopes. Rode main street. Not hero snow, but it'll do. good for open arced turns, but no extreme carving, too many patches of boilerplate.

Razor and challenge should be open by saturday.

  2. Voy

Saturday and sunday were good until the herd showed up and scraped all of the decent snow off to boiler plate. If you are going at night, it should be boilerplate, unless temps get high enough for it to loosen up.

The whole mtn is not open yet, but they were blowing snow and I would guess they will be completely open for the weekend.

Heading up tuesday morning and probably a couple other days. Can give you an update later int he week.

  3. Yea just give me a call.

My topsheet has the same concept as the shown board, but I'm not posting until it is complete, which is sometime in the spring, unless I can pick up a heater for the garage.

Mallard, I did tape, but didnt use duct or clear plastic tape. Used white masking tape and it stuck to the board, still had some leaking mor ethan I would have hoped.

Still trying to find a titinal supplier, but most searches come up for overseas and I cant dump that kind of cash. Maybe after a few builds I will look to go up that ladder.

The swallow tail would be an interesting build, especially if you shape the nose like O-SINS. I'd build a 185 plus, if I did. If I lived where pow was aplenty, I be making big ass floaty type boards.

Gotta run, regular job calls, ARGH!!!!

  4. Next summer I plan to keep a log. If I get proficient enough at it I hope to approach the local high school and see if they would be willing to fund some time and cash to allow a handful of students to sign up to learn how to make boards. I would imagine it'll be all freestyle interest. Better than making a gun rack.

As far as becoming another recognized builder, that is a long way off. The other folks are at least 10 years ahead of where I am but they have forged the way and I am following their dedication to making great products. I'm just another ape using a blade of grass to get termites out of the mound. DOnt ask, I think it was a Jane Goodall episode on Apes using tools.

Hopefully maybe I can stand in that group but for now, just learning.

I guess I'll see if my first explodes under my and if it does.....back to the drawing board. My wife supports it b/c she knows it's good therapy for me and keeps my idle hands busy besides the boys.

RR tie sounds great too, but I'm having trouble finding used 4 inch fire hose for bladder. I made another one out of reinforced roofing material and it is working very well when under pressure but the hose would be much more reliable. I put my press on some nice extra caster I rips off and old cart I had years ago so it wheels around the garage fairly easy.

Fiddled with the rods you spoke of Ralann and it is feasible, just working with CF and epoxy is not something I am into right now. You can get CF sleeves to make them, the connection points are the challenge.

Made some glove protectors out of CF/epoxy- a bit rough but once again can still work with a little more care.

    Just babbling,

  5. Randy,

I did proceed with my venture and can say it was a great experience for me so far. It did take some cash to get it going and this is even considering I borrowed a good number of peices of mechanized tools from my Father during the summer, even the table saw that whacked the tip of my left index finger off while cutting sidwall material. Now they call me Tippy.

I had the pressing scheduled , but weather was a bit to cold at night for the epoxy I have been using.

here is a list of major things I went thru

Resawing of wood stock for stringers, epoxied strips to create a stringer block and resawed on order for strongers to match up on opposite sides of board. Buy a low kerf blade, pricy but worth it. I am looking further into fillers for the epoxy process for stringers because it bleeds out. Filler makes it more pasty. I had some open slots between some of the stringers I had to fill.

Purchased stock square tubular steel to build press. I recommend going with the open side i-beam type press and avoid the closed tubular press. Getting the layers, forms and bladder are going to be a pain to get into the press I built. I will change to an i beam press next summer. Ibeam press would be cheaper too.

Cutting and making forms for pressing and for routing of wood cores. This and the press took the most time (MDF is not the funnest stuff to work with).

After finish epoxying wood blank, routing the camber and the top curve of the board. Routing was fun b/c I could see the board being created, maybe like shaping surfboards.

Adhering sidewalls was a pain. Next time I will epoxy to core and then shape sidewall along with core if its possible. Tip and tail adherence is difficult.

I went with wood veneer and all I can say is I let my wife come up with the pattern, pick out what she wanted and I cut the veneer and urethaned, its should look badass. I also named it after her. when cutting veneer, tape it becuase it spilts easy and oversize the pattern. It will come to proper size in final cuts after pressing.

Base material was interesting to work with and I did a second one after super glue bled thru onto base material. I cut the first free hand and then using guides the second. Next time I am finding local person with CNC machine because the metal edges will show if your cut isnt near perfect.

Glued up the metal edges, whcih there is a sequence that I found worked well and can talk to you about it. I was also fortunate enough to have someone make me an edge bender. CHUCK is a GOD!!!!!!!

Also enjoyed doing the insets portion.

cutting fiberglass, Carbon fiber was fairly easy.

All in all I did run into some hurdles, but a great learning experience. I plan to have some templates CNC'd for diff board types, forms, etc and get better at CAD.

I basically worked from scratch, but look to simplify next year with use of some CNC's , but will continue.

I kicked around the idea of harvesting my own wood for the core because my dad and I do some tree work on the side, but my cousin threw me one better.....grow the trees and then harvest them to build the cores. far fetched but neat idea.

Certainly feasible, would be even easier with mechanized equipment and a 4 bay garage would have been sweet too. One car, unheated didtn cut it.

I would be more than happy to help you thru your experience.

Disappointed I didnt get pressed before the cold got here, but it will be fun to get back at it next summer. I will also be looking at making some long skateboards/

Spilt board would be tough I think and the swallow tail is also something I am lookinat for my friend who lives in Bozeman.

Thanks for digging up the thread, its interestig for me to read thru old replies to compare to what ppl said vs. what I did and learned.

    Gotta run

    Greg

  6. One basic run to mid mountain lift. Vista to Midway to bottom of mainst. I stayed as long as I could , but top Mainstreet did not open but was soppose to. Patches of good stuff with ruts and hidden groomed piles of death cookies (size of your fist)that disintegrate beneath your edge and wash out. Got about 7 runs in and bagged it.

Good to get the rust off the legs. one run to get the feel back , plus I was on the new Pogo Overdose, cant wait to get it on some good cord. It will give the MADD 158 a run for its money. Good pop on the overdose, that I know youre gonna like. Also getting use to the new Indys. Stiff compared to my others.

Pissed, they turned come around into a park. ARGH.

    good to be out though.

CAnt make it sat but wil be up sun, I have to put in a floor at my buddies house. Have fun.

  7. I will be out friday, sat and sun, as long as the wife lets me get the season pass. Couldnt get it earlier b/c all extra cash was going towards the "project", which as of today has been put on hold until the spring. Those folks werent chitting when they said it was quit an investment to get started. Temps will limit my ability to press with an unheated garage, plus some late research may help me out in the long run.. ITs ready for pressing though.

Next summer, decide what type of board you want and put some cash aside to cover materials cost and I will build it for you. I learned a great deal this summer and look forward to learning more.

Have enough others in the quiver to keep me busy. Dont know what to start the season on.

I hope all is well and looking forward to getting back on the slopes.

  8. What I want to know is why the screws weren't loosened at the end of last year?? I always back off the tension of the screws that go in the inserts. I just don't like keeping the screws tightened down through the heat/cool cycles of summer. I do the same with my snow ski binding release adjustment screws. I think alot of folks here do the same as I.

I also back off the tension whenever I wax my boards.

    volvo,

End of season and waxing do call for removing bindings and discs from the board, but the screws being loosened were the bindings size adjustment screws. Picked up a set of different boots this summer and changing binding size to accomodate new boots. I should have been more clear on my first post.

    Thanks

It does however smell like sulfur.

  9. I know many of you are already riding. Here in PA, we have had warm temps until Friday night, when a cold front set in. Now they can finally make some snow and get us riding. Until today I really didnt think about riding because it has been so warm here.

With the cold, I began getting my boards, boots and clothing ready today. With that, I am setting up my bindings (TD1'S). as I break the allen screw with my "t" allen, I smell a smell that I know, but cant place where I have smelt it before.. What is actually happening to create that smell and where elkse would I have smelled it.

  10. Not sure if it will be open due to the late season warmth, but I will be in Pittsburgh the week of December 18 for some training and will be heading to Seven springs during the evening hours. Looking to hook up with someone to ride and/or connections for cheap lift tix.

Keep an eye on the weather and let me know if anyone plans to ride that week if weather permits.

    Greg

  11. Good input, I didnt even think to run it by all of you figuring most carvers are bit older with kids.

I go back down in September with my company. I only get one day to do stuff, so I may get some guys on my work team to rent a ski boat and give them some wakeboard and ski lessons and for those silly enough I let try barefootin'. I'll go first and do some deep water starts with some tumble turns and one footin and then yank some of my coworkers aroundon the learner boom.

i did that with some classmates back in grad school. One guy who was quite an egomaniac got out on the boom like he was going to be doing tumble turns right out of the holeshot and he refused to let go of the boom. I have never seen a human being porpoise so high off the water for such a long distance. I told him not to try and plant the feet until I gave him the thumbs up, but he kept trying to stand up too early and his feet would just dig in and he would porpoise, I wish I had the video for youtube, too damn funny

I may goto a cable park I saw on the way back to the airport.

The package we had didnt include water parks, plus I lopped the tip of my left index finger off 4 days before we left so I couldnt get wet. I did it cutting sidewall material for the board I'm building.

Any ski resorts you folks recommend for winter time fun for the family. by that time I will have a 5 year old and a two year old.

  12. Just got back from Disney with my wife and four year old. Great weather, but please let it snow here in PA, Mickey ba-lows :barf: . Not having been there in about 30 years, I had greater expectations and about the only way I will go back is if they let me be Tinkerbell on the zipline at Magic Kingdom before the fireworks. Hell even my kid was bored except for Buzz Lightyear (Hint :Highest point value is hitting the spinning disc on top of the saucer in the volcano room 100,000.) don't get me wrong i'm sure some of you enjoy it, but it just wasnt my cup of tea.

Looks like its time to suit the boy for some winter fun so we can veto Mommy for next season's vacation. If anyone has suggestions of resorts that offer good riding, stuff for a non-riding mom and half decent for younger kids, please let me know, so I can start my campaign for next year.

Don't believe the hype and be wary of the difference between theme park and amusement park. If you're looking to get at least a few shots of adrenaline thru the day head elsewhere, not Mickey's big house of product in your face fun.

    Damn rodent.

Hate to sound sour , but I'm glad to be home.

  13. When I get a chance. This one was a bit more than glue and beer fix. It took all of my previous pain level ratings of 6 or 7 down to about a 2 after the pain cycles I went thru Sunday and Monday night. Percocet (sp?) didnt even touch it, it probably did, but I was in some down right mean a$$ pain. I could feel all of the cuts the surgeon performed to remove excess skin and bone fragments earlier in the day. Thought it was cool to watch until the shots wore off that evening.

Whatever you do, do not take a hot shower. Hand kept dry, but the circulation increased and all the pressure went straight to my finger. Put me on the kitchen floor crying like a little baby. Oddly enough, drank 2 cool glasses of water and sat by an open back door for cool air and once I cooled down the pain went from a literal 10 to about a 4.

It will match my grandmothers finger in a lawn mower at 82 when she did it, and my dad's in a snow blower, except he put his finger in a snowball and put the snowball in his pocket. finished snowblowing my grandmother's driveway and then I took him to hospital and they reattached. Not stoopid folks, just silly farmers from Pennsylvania. Ok , maybe a little stoopid.

I will also post pics of board once complete.

  14. I had planned on doing coats on my wood veneer and then just making it the topsheet when I do the pressing

So they put a coat on and then wet sand and then another coat and wet sand and so on.

    What is curtain coating?

This helps folks as I am about two weeks from my first pressing simply due to work and family schedule. Oh I forgot, I also cut the tip of my left index finger off sunday morning on a table saw, cutting sidewall material. So that has set me back too. Painful? YOU BET!!!!!! Feels like a 24-hour acetylene torch to the tip of the finger.

Lastly, this is for Sean, how do I keep layers of material from shifting during lay and pressing. Mind you, I am a lone dude working in my single car garage with out the bells and whistle equipment.

    Thanks

  15. Picke done up last season and glad for doing so. Took my level of confidence more than few rungs up and lead me to picking up a 158. Hold s great edge and can be worked tight turns or more open turns. I go 210 and it held me decently even though I am abit over its capacity.

I forgot it is on my avatar.
