  1. A good morning for Keenan and me, except Keenan tweaked his back and had to cut the day short. It didn't seem to impair his riding - clean and fluid to the end. Snow was pretty firm until getting a bit sloppy/corny late in the day (mixed rain and snow does that), which was actually good for charging the Rock Garden face on my new old Rossi 157 race board (easy to push around but stout enough to handle bumps and crud, and not too precious). Light crowd, 5pm close and short lift lines made a 30-run day (27000') do-able even with lunch, snack and two board changes. Friendly folks (lots of curiosity about the gear (a few former hardbooters), some decent terrain, affordable food and no attitude. If it wasn't 35 and "wintry mix" I'd be back for another day.
  2. In an Air BnB "No Smoking" actually means something.
  3. Grooming was sweet on Friday 2/12 and the crowd was minimal. AL is not a big area - only a few runs are wide enough to really cruise on and there's not much in the way of steep groom at all - Trouble Creek was smooth and fast enough to get laid out on and Variety and Broadway good for a few low rides. There are a couple of steeper bump runs - maybe they could be groomed if we ask nicely and they have the equipment and enough cover. Speaking of cover - it was good almost everywhere, but you'll want to scout around some for thin spots and a few chronic rocks before going too crazy. Let's hope a bit more snow falls this week and it doesn't get too warm. Forecast is for cold nights and above-freezing days and some snow this week, so it could well be quite a nice surface for us. We stayed in La Grande as we were on our way to SUn Valley and it made no sense to drive to Baker City then back to AL for the day. BC's a little more vital but both are OK. Anybody know if LaGrande is going to be packed with basketballers?
  4. I've used Air BnB a number of times with nearly all good experiences - decent places, rates and hosts. The only thing I find annoying about it is that you can't have multiple requests going at once (last I checked) but have to request a place then wait 24 hours to hear if you have been accepted before you can try another one. Makes last-minute planning kind of difficult. There is now an "Instant Book" option for some places. It does take a little while and some traveling to establish yourself in the "community of trust", and it helps if you're sociable without being a pest, responsible about treating the places you stay as you would like a guest to treat your place (and not a total dirtbag at home so you don't know how to act in the first place). It takes a little more effort than staying in hotels or regular BnB's but if you are trying to save money, meet locals, avoid noisy/icky travel plazas and/or want to feed yourself tolerable food for at least some meals while traveling it's probably the best option available. Sometimes hosts can be a little more sociable than you might like, but in my experience they generally are pretty cool and easy to get along with, whether or not you even ever meet them. YMMV - but it's worth trying out.
  5. I find my UPZ RC 10's much more comfortable and precise than the Deeluxe 700s they replaced. I haven't found any need for BTS but I do hav ed to pad around a heel spur-of-the-moment hope of punching there. I did have some punching done around left navicular bone by someone who nearly ruined the upper. Bought blacks to replace uppers but the damaged area hasn't failed. My only gripe is the propensity for the can't disk screws to fall out, even with Loctite. Buy spares!
  6. Having fun hanging with family, but it kind of limits extracurricular activity. I saw three hardbooters yesterday but didn't get to chat. Snow on most groomers is pretty hard but traffic has been remarkably light. Of the light traffic a disturbing fraction is faster than competent but no whackage so far. Got scolded by an instructor for going too fast, then complimented by one of two patrollers and a host at a slow sign a little further down (within sight). I think the instructor was trying to fluff up his tip. This is a big hill, with fast lifts and short lines. By the end of the day I'm good and tired. Riding faster with the kids than I might by myself is a factor, as well as being out of shape from too much carpentry and not enough exercise this fall.
  7. Got Liftopia tickets for Saturday/Sunday. See y'all there!
  8. I'm a little confused - it sounds like it's just a casual rendezvous for Saturday, Sunday and/or Monday at the going ticket rate for anyone who shows up. No private ski area - not at $80/day/person (I wouldn't be that interested in a small hill on a Monday at that rate). We're going to stay in La Grande tomorrow night and ride Anthony on our way to a family get-together in Sun Valley. Scouting report to follow.
  9. I'm going to be visiting SV with some relatives (skiers) 2/13-16. Maybe see some of you local folk? Staying at Warm Springs base. Wearing Orange/black/purple and a white/orange POC helmet. I answer to "Dennis".
  10. I have some Deeluxe Track 700's (with several liners, heels, and BTS installed) and an old pair of Burton Furnaces. Ping me Thursday and remind me to get more details and photos if you're interested. I think the Deeluxe shells cover 28.5 - 30.
  11. Here's a pair of Level Flys I've been keeping alive since 2011. The Kevlar palm fabric was way too sticky on hard snow and wearing my shoulders almost as fast as it was eroding, so I covered first the right palm, then the left with 2" webbing glued on with a polyurethane window sealant (10 oz. gun tube - the brand is no longer available locally but there are similar ones. I clamped the pads on with spring clamps and boards with polyethylene bags for release and some masking tape to keep it tidy - more or less. Later I smeared the same goo on the fingers where wear was showing up. They are still warm and fairly water resistant, fast-drying with the removable liners, and offer great wrist protection. I have sprained fingers in them with lateral impacts, but never badly. I'll likely buy a new pair at Whistler next month for dress occasions or in case Level ever (perish the thought) goes under. They make one of the best products in the industry, IMHO. It would be nice to have a little flap shingled under my palm pad and over the wrist strap to deflect snow and prevent it building up under the strap. Of course, it would be nice if I could just be satisfied to hover my hand an inch off the snow instead of spraining fingers, wearing out gloves and slowing myself down. Note that the gloves with all this goop on them and the wrist braces in are not conducive to skiing or impressive dexterity, including carrying more than one or two boards or fiddling with cameras, zippers, etc. I often stick a light pair of screen-compatible gloves in my pocket for that stuff. Do give the PU goop plenty of time to cure, preferably in a warm and moist environment, or you'll wind up with sticky black smears everywhere!
  12. Speaking of Bomber Butter in heelpieces - I have taken to pretty well filling the heelpiece with it to exclude any water that might freeze and jam things. This after opening up a heelpiece once at home and having a significant amount of water drain out. I suppose one could run them pretty dry and leave plenty of passage for water, but you'll never know for sure.
  13. Interior BC/Alberta is packed with decent resorts spaced an hour or two apart. Red, Panorama*, Silver Star, Kimberly, Apex*, Sun Peaks, Fernie, Castle Peak and more. If you can take at least a week you can, with a bit of planning, hit a different resort every day and not have to do any epic hauls. If you don't want to battle the I-5 corridor, come up 97, make a detour to White Pass* (stay in Yakima or at the pass (a little pricey), then Mission*, then a 4-hour drive to Penticton through a small border crossing (short lines). From there you can make one of several loop tours, depending on your time, budget and weather. Drop me a note if you want to spend a day at White Pass - I might be able to host you at my ski club for a night, depending on the date.
  14. Pencil me in. A-Lakes is Usually good for a fun, low-key day. The cat terrain is a big burn on the back side of the ridge that runs South from the top of the lift. It may have grown up some since we rode it some years back, but it's still nice mellow terrain.
  15. "You are a class act Sean !!! " But we knew that already...
  16. Ace's looooonnnng carve was epic and hilarious. Check it out. See for some more limbo carving, but it doesn't appear they are getting down to 14". 3" of snow at the top of White Pass last weekend!
  17. http://eaud.smugmug.com/share/BOL-SES-2015 Videos (mostly Thursday) are uploaded finally. Anybody have any idea why I shouldn't be able to paste a url into this message? I can paste it into Notepad. The paste buttons above invoke a message asking if I want to grant access to the contents of my clipboard, but clicking "allow" doesn't seem to have any useful effect.
  18. Steve That's a boatload of pictures, and a lot of them are really good. Thanks for posting so many sequences - it's really helpful for studying technique! Dennis
  19. Johnasmo - The world's longest Eurocarve is one of the funniest things I've seen in quite awhile. Nice!
  20. Now you need to make an isolator plate to ensure purity of the flex pattern.
  21. http://eaud.smugmug.com/SES-2015-Folder I've organized my photos into one folder with a gallery for each day, The above url should get you access to all of them. Let me know if it doesn't. I have a bunch of video clips to upload yet but no decent connection (only satellite this week, and dead dog on a hot day slow). I'll note here when I get them uploaded. Nothing spectacular - mostly flybys from the intermediate and steeps clinics. Dennis
  22. Bomber House Party Photos. Everyone came as their favorite superhero, except for Clark Kent. http://eaud.smugmug.com/SES-2015-Tuesday
  23. Thanks, Brian Here's a set of selected shots from Monday, including some video clips from the second Intermediate clinic. Some are not as sharp as I'd like - First Tracks light wasn't great and I was kind of jittery with excitement, hypoxia and caffeine. I'm using this new camera for action shooting for the first time, so bear with me. It's not the talent that's blurry - it's the photographer. As usual, there's a lot of riding talent present. Everyone seems to keep improving, and some of these folks have polished their skills to a fine luster. http://eaud.smugmug.com/SES-2015-Monday Dennis
