  1. Personally, I think that if they are done properly, turbines can be every bit as beautiful as the scenery. It's not like they steam noxious gasses into the landscape or blacken the surrounding area. A wind farm of 300 foot turbines on the horizon at the beach would be damn mesmerizing to watch.
  2. If you read the comments on youtube, it seems that it did torpedo shortly after the video was made. That must have made a hell of a mess...
  3. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCuP-XHefTo&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCuP-XHefTo&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> 47 Knots!
  4. Time to take the Tasers away. I have the distinct feeling that because they're considered non-lethal, conditions "warranting" their use are somewhat broader than for firearm use. Either the regulations surrounding the use of less-lethal systems need to be reevaluated or they need to be homogenized with the lethal systems. We can't have cops running around with less-lethal weapons that they feel they can use whenever they feel marginally threatened because it doesn't leave any lasting damage (on zee 95th percentile crash dummy). If I were to whip out a Taser every time I felt someone was looking at me funny or treating me with disrespect, I would be arrested and charged with felony brandishing and/or assault with a (not) deadly weapon.
  5. The Veyron isn't a small car... If I had a Veyron, I would follow Tex's lead, except I'd skip on the Pickup and get a few Porsches and classics, and skip the bar in favor of letting the money sit in the bank and let me not NEED to work. Either that or I'd sell it and not have to worry about paying for school.
  6. That's why I would never buy a 951 as a daily driver. The 944 I just got is going to be my daily driver, the NAs tend to be much more reliable than the Turbos.
  7. After what feels like ages of waiting, I present to you my new summer ride:
  8. I joined as a highschool freshman intent on being a pilot in the airforce, went to an aviation college and burnt out after a year. Went to Culinary school, worked around NH for two years, and now I'm a Pre-Med student, and all my friends just graduated college :( making me feel like I've wasted the past 4 years.
  9. You actually get butt-hurt about things that people say on the slopes? Nobody said that YOU were a gd softbooter IIRC. His comment was directed at the GD softbooters that stop and sit down in the middle of the trail. Enough said!
  10. give me a break. I highly doubt that Jack meant to hurt your feelings with his remark. There are softbooters and then there are softbooters, I assume that since you're here that you're the latter, but your attitude in this thread leads me to believe otherwise.
  11. Way to take a responsible and friendly thread and make it suck. Good work, it's impressive.
  12. Al alternative to a 220V Tea Kettle is to use an old-fashioned stovetop teapot. That's what I do, but I have to put a thermometer in the water and set the alarm for different types of tea. An induction cooktop would speed making tea greatly. I'll probably have at least one induction burner in addition to my gas range.
  13. Teles are best for...well...everything but carving :p If I'm out for photography, you can bet that I'll be on my teles. They're just SO versatile...like the Jeep of snowsports . If you were going out on variable terrain with the good chance of needing to get around in some unconventional ways, would you rather a Wrangler or a Porsche?
  14. There's a light pipe/skylight display at the mall here. The pipes can go through multiple floors if needed from the looks of things, at least through an attic without any problems. Built in display cases for curiosities and collectibles should be on my list, in addition to a nice home office/study area. Nice desk with a wall or two of built in bookshelves, light tube or few. Bamboo floors throughout. LED or OLED lighting throughout.
  15. Professional-style kitchen. It would be nice if it looked nice, but I really want functionality - a 6-8 burner range, small deep-fryer, double ovens. A small walk-in cooler/freezer would be nice instead of having a laydown and/or aux freezer in the basement. Cool room/wine cellar. Heated brick or cobble/paver driveway and walkway - no more shoveling or ice problems Off-the-grid functionality I've looked into underground homes a few years ago and really liked what I saw - once you go down about 8 feet, it's 55 degrees F all year, minimizing heating and cooling needs, leaving more of my solar and/or wind power available for my other wants like the walk-ins and heated driveway. Large heated garage - >2000ft^2, with drainage in one area, and a lift in another. Cabinets, shelving, dedicated sporting equipment storage area/system, and heavy lighting suitable for detailing. Sporting goods equipment area of at least storage for 20+ snowboards, 10+ pairs of skis, boots cubbies, Golf bags, firearm safe, bicycle hangers, 3+ kayaks, and track tire storage. Heated pool, large hot tub. Both outdoors either heated concrete approaches/surrounds or synthetic decking approaches for traction. Party shower. Nuff said. Flush-mount cabinets and builtins all over the house. I love builtins. And my other half wants a Claw-Foot tub. I don't know why, but she does. I know that we've come up with more than this over the past few years, but can't think of it now that I'm on the spot.
  16. That's not the point. It's that the police can pull you over for nothing other than a seatbelt check, and if they happen to see something that's not supposed to be there in the footwell, on the backseat, etc, they've got you. It's the principle of search without probable cause - the legal equivalent of pulling you over because they think the snowboards on your roof might be stolen without any logical basis for thinking so.
  17. It's completely unrelated to snowboarding. PM me to participate, and I'll PM you back with an article that I would like you to read and then tell me how you feel about it. This isn't a multiple choice survey, it's qualitative - I just want to know how you feel about the events in the article. Thank you, Justin
  18. I don't care if a prospective employer googles my name and comes up with my facebook page or academia.edu page or anything, but I would flat out refuse to GIVE them that information as a requirement of consideration. It's password protected for a reason. Next thing is that they'll want your online banking information so they can see how you spend your money. Nope, can't hire this guy, he ordered something from a sex toy site to use in his private business. Oh no! Look here! He pays his car off weekly instead of monthly! Give me a break Bozeman.
  19. I have my 2005 Chrysler 300C She runs the 1/4 mile in 13.6 @102 mph And later this week/early next week I'll have this 1986 Porsche 944 NA Not nearly as fast in a line as the 300C, but damn are they fun to drive on a windy road and they get good mileage too. It's going to be my DD all year with some good snow tires. Maintenance isn't going to be that bad since it's an NA. Can't wait...
  20. "Better" and "Complications" by Atul Gawande - you're a nurse, right? You should enjoy them both. Every time I start doubting the premed direction I'm taking I read one of them and it reinforces the decision. I think you'd like them. I don't know if they would last 13 hours of nonstop reading though.
  21. At least you didn't lose any equipment. I needed to call a diver friend one time to retrieve the mast from my Sunfish when I capsized and the mast torpedoed to the bottom of the lake, sail and all. The lake is only about 50' deep, but too deep for me to go. SCUBA friends to the rescue. How's that for embarrassing? Stupid old boat. Hey, if some of your friends still want to try it, you should put that in the win column.
  22. Med school indeed. I'm restarting my academic career next month with a Lib. Arts program to get my GPA up to where it needs to be to transfer to a real school where I'm planning on majoring in BioChemistry with a possible Physics (Optics) minor. Then off to med school, I'm going to try like hell for either Dartmouth or Tufts . All the while having a kiddo that wants to help me with everything and generally trying to be at least a halfway decent father. I'm taking the maximum course load over the summer (2 sessions of 2 classes each), then probably 3-4 courses this fall. Unfortunately I need to bust my hump through these first few classes to be able to transfer to UNH come the spring semester, but they're only a few days a week so I should hopefully have some baby time. I'll be trying to take it at least somewhat easy once I get to UNH, I really don't want to miss my kid's life. I think that's what scares me more than anything.
  23. My son is to be born May 15th. I'm starting college up again on May 11th. She's starting classes ON May 15th (online though). What the hell are we thinking? I'm looking at at 8 more years of school before I can start turning a half-decent paycheck again, she's got about a year. Are we nuts? Maybe. Am I excited about it all? Absolutely. Am I terrified? I think I'd be stupid not to be. I know I haven't been posting around here alot lately, but wish us luck!
  24. its kids like that who keep my insurance rates sky-high, make it damn near impossible to get a loan, and generally get looked at like a punk whenever I go to the track. It's a shame that someone had to die in this situation, but at least nobody else was physically injured.
  25. Poor willy...stuck down there in warm beach land. If only I could be banned to such a place .
