I have always been a little bugged by mr. white. ever since i went to a grand prix and he threw a hissy fit because they wouldn't let him and his friends in the athlete tent without his pass. they all had their faces covered with burton bandanas and from the moment i heard him say "let me in man, dont you know who i am?!" I lost about 96% of my respect for him. Needless to say they didn't let him in because nobody could see his face. But he went and talked to whatever power that be and he came back and threw his pass at the security guy.

Thats great if people know you, but if you have to tell them who you are and then expect to be treated like a god, you might as well just wear a $2.99 hat that says "#1"

And for the skaters, Jay Adams is my hero...the style is amazing. I think in Dogtown & Z-Boys, Stacy Peralta hit the nail right on the head when he said

You get one chance at doing this and if you miss it, you don't get it again. And thats the hardest part of it. And its hard for even me to see it because i see it in a guy like Jay Adams and I go, 'He shoulda had it all.' Jay shoulda had it all. And it makes me so sad that he didn't. Because he was better than all of us.

-Stacy Peralta

Alva turned rock star..thats not what skating is about. White turned rock star too. The similarities are huge..minus drugs and alcohol but shauns still young. It'll be interesting to see how the future puts him in the history books. I could see him as being the best at playing the game off the slopes but it may just always be like this...people will be discussing why he wore a bandana on his face and how young he was and how much stuff he had thrown at him...but are we gonna remember his style in the pipe in 30 years? We'll see i guess..

Didn't Christian Hosoi get locked up in Hawaii too ?That would explain a 5 year hiatus. He must have got the idea from my avatar. Just look at those pictures... 36 years old + 2 weeks back on a skateboard after a 5 year hiatus = that!!?

Some things just don't add up, but in the life of Christian Hosoi it all makes perfect sense when you are born to skate. A late night session at the Hickam Hangar turned in to a fun filled air show as Christian (as he put it) flew his first Christ Airs as a Christian. 50-50.com apostles were there to witness the natural grace and flow from the one and only... truly amazing!

Noted skateboarder nets

jail time for drug charges

Honolulu Star-Bulletin - Hawaii News

September 11, 2001

By Debra Barayuga

dbarayuga@starbulletin.com

Nationally known skateboarder Christian R. Hosoi, formerly of Lanikai, was sentenced to five years and 10 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for carrying nearly 1.5 pounds of crystal methamphetamine to Honolulu in January 2000.

Moments after he was sentenced, he clasped his hands before him and gave a silent prayer. He had faced a maximum of 87 months under federal sentencing guidelines.

U.S. District Judge Alan C. Kay considered Hosoi's rehabilitation efforts and cooperation with the government in determining a sentence on the lower end of the guidelines. "The court believes Mr. Hosoi tried to cooperate to the extent possible and is remorseful."

Hosoi apologized to the court yesterday and expressed remorse for his involvement in drugs. He had pleaded guilty to possession of crystal methamphetamine with intent to distribute, being a "courier" for money and later for drugs.

Hosoi attributed his conduct to an addiction to drugs and financial problems with his business that led to bankruptcy.

"I'm thankful I'm not dead because of my drug addiction," he said. He believes he has turned his life around and wants to make a difference in the lives of other youths, as he has done since his arrest.

"I want to be a good example; I don't want to be just a top professional skateboarder."

Hosoi said that since his arrest he has given his life to Jesus Christ and devotes his time to talking to other inmates and at-risk juveniles about his skateboard industry success and his drug addiction. He wants to expand his reach to high school youths and youth ministries.

Hosoi has provided a positive testimony to troubled youths and used his influence in the skateboard industry to get sponsors to build a skateboard park, said Christopher Swain, a pastor and director of the City Lights Christian Youth Center in Orange County, whose niece married Hosoi 2 1/2 months ago.

The court received more than 100 letters in support of Hosoi, including letters from six mainland sheriff deputies. One extolled the effect he made on a group of troubled youths who visited him in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lou Bracco disputed the extent of Hosoi's cooperation with the government. He said Hosoi led federal investigators on a "wild-goose chase" for several months after his arrest based on information he provided and to this day has not been fully cooperative by providing the full names of those he worked for.

"I've prosecuted others who provided detailed information about people they were involved with, with some risk to themselves," Bracco said. "This defendant hasn't done that."

Hosoi, one of America's top 40 ranked professional skateboarders in the 1980s, is known for popularizing the "Christ Air" trick move where the skateboarder goes airborne and grabs the skateboard from under his feet with two hands outstretched and legs together to form the shape of a crucifix.

Hosoi started his own company at 17 and designed the Hosoi Hammerhead, named for the shape of the board's nose.

...since I skated any vert. Last time I tried it we were staying in this house in Monument Beach at my sister's wedding in 2002. I look out the window of the room I'm staying in and there is an empty and dry round-bottom pool. I happened to have the just-restored 1978 Sundancer with me to show my brother, and had an immediate mental lapse that ended with me in the pool on my board. I got in 3 or 4 below coping turns before I bit it hard (no pads or helmet) and smacked my elbow and head on the concrete...elbow still bothers me to this day. A nice wood or similar halfpipe with a full complement of safety gear might be doable though!

As far as kitesurfing - I was a competitive Windsurfer from 1978 to 1993, at which point I quit the sport for good. I've got friends who kite, but just don't want to get back into a wind-chasing and gear-centric sport...the first go-round cost me jobs, girlfriends, money, a real life. My main water sports are ocean kayak surfing and flatwater marathon kayak racing now. But I'll be in touch when I head down that way...I'm formerly from the Vineyard and visit down there fairly often as family is still there.

Love to run some cones! I have about 25-30 in my possession, but no real slalom board...wish I'd kept one of those old Turner Summer Skis!

wc, I'll bet we know alot of the same people from windsurfing and the Vineyard(prob VT as well). The last time I skated ZT Maximus in Cambridge(RIP) I slammed pretty hard in the halfpipe and decided to come to grips that I'm just getting too old to skate that hard and gimp around for weeks.I used to be able to just shake it off and keep skating.I still ride my 60" longboard alot tho.Running cones is a blast. JG was training with Wentzl Ruml from the cape.Kiting has replaced the jones to skate and it does become an addiction like windsurfing always was.I still love to roll up on kids skating in the street and take 2 boards to kick down some old school and freak them out. I can still do double nose wheelies and daffys. "Can you Ollie ?" "What's an ollie ?"I should practice doin' kickflips again and bust out multi 360s cuz I love the look on thier face when I tell'em I started skating 30 years ago. JG rode for Turner for awhile and I was riding one of his protos for awhile. I think ~tb still has a Turner.Did you hear about the guy that died kitesurfing in CT last saturday ? Really sad.

I just read through part of that forum and wow, what a tragedy. My heart goes out to his wife and 2 children. From Seth P's and CTkiteboarding's posts, the death couldve been easily avoided. I also read Fred's near death experience on page 9. Its crazy how fast things go wrong and how dangerous it can be. It really goes to show you how important it is to have saftey equipment with you.
