Speedzilla
This was discussed a bit in the "Buck" thread, but I figured it deserved it's own thread. Saturday, December 3rd at Buck Hill - First Annual Carving Cup. Details on the site: www.buckhill.com (nice web site, eh? ;) ) Same style event as www.carvingcup.com Skiers & boarders are welcome. Here's how it works.... A GS style course, except with three buoys per turn. Carving around the outside buoy gets 5 points, the middle buoy gets you 4 pts, and the inside and buoy and fastest line gets you 3 pts. Time/Points x 100 = Result Lowest result wins. oldkey
....but checked out both websites and there is not a carving board to be found.....skiers everywhere....what's up with that? I'll have to get you some pictures at this comp. :) Do the riders get to use the course before the skiers chew it up? You are right....this should be a blast. BobD
Dave I'm sure you have been the driving force behind this, Thanks. Can you fill us in on details What is being used for the buoys ? Who is setting the course ? (need help ?) Will the course be wide enough to require 120 plus degree turns ? ( that's when the skiers seem to loose thier carve ) Can we get a turn up the steep bank at the bottom ( next to the lift ) ? See if the skiers like getting a little inverted. I'm assuming we can enter for skis and boards. BobD

To be honest, I have no idea if anyone has done this with boards. If you can provide me with some of your awesome photography, I'll make sure that the hardbooters get equal representation on next year's poster and on the web. Several years ago, Fischer did an event like this at the hill, and it was great fun to watch. People have been talking about it ever since, so the folks at Buck deceided to run an event of their own. I hope the turnout is good, maybe we can do another event later in the season. The buoys have been purchased, and look just like the ones the FIS uses. I'm not sure about course details yet and I'll find out if you can enter on both skis and boards.
ARCrider
....Do the riders get to use the course before the skiers chew it up? You are kidding right. I've raced before(on skis) where the order of start was women first(skiers then boarders) then men. Did the women boarders ever rip ruts into that course. Every gate was like crossing and recrossing a sinuous railway track on a bicycle. A boarder is going to trench the course like no skier ever could. oldkey
.....but I am thinking that there will be far fewer riders than skiers. Just filled out Patrick's registration.....we'll see everyone there.
Speedzilla
It sounds like it's going to be a big fast course with maybe 6-8 turns total. Although I don't know for sure, bring the long boards just in case!

BobD Hi Bob, We will probably seek guidance from one skier and one boarder when setting the course. Yes, you can enter on both skis and a board. $10 per. Speedzilla
Hey BobD, Are there any forums for you ski carver dudes? If so, can you give this event a plug? I want to see a good turnout for both sides so we can convince BH to do more of these events in the future. We are still on for Saturday. Snow conditions will be great. Speedzilla
I'm at the hill right now. The snowmakers are in full force and the temps are forecasted to keep dropping. The snow should be ideal for carving on Saturday. The race will actually start around 11am. They have decided to allow some practice time since this is a new format for everyone. It also allows us to tweak the course a bit as well before the real race begins.
Scuff
Buck bought bouys? That totally rocks!! Yeeee haaa!!! Hey Speedy: Is this hour or so of open course time going to be for inspection, or full-out running of the course? - Just concerned that it will turn into railroad tracks.... and skiiers will like us even less.. I don't like confrontations.. The Carvecup site says that there is a timer placed AFTER the starting gate, leading me to belive that the timer will trip while you are already at speed.. Is that little caveat going to apply at our Buck Race? I've got new Structure, New Wax, and Sharp edges on my race board. Ready to rip it up on Saturday! See ya there! ~Karl
trent
from what i was told, we'd be able to practice in the course. due to the fact that this will be new to all of us, it will give us a chance to check it out before they start timing us. it will also give those people setting the course time to tweak it, if needed. but i'm sure it'll be set perfectly the first time, right tigger? -trent

See ya there! ~Karl Yes, as Trent said, we will be able to run the course at full speed during the practice session. After that, we'll be able to reset if needed, or just tweak a few turns for the race. It all depends on what the course looks like after the practice session. I have a feeling that we'll have more boarders than skiers, so I think we can take them if it comes down to a brawl. The start will be the normal snowboard race start. In the shack, with the hand grips. I'm predicting firm "hero snow" for Saturday.

Scuff
Speedzilla: I dunno.... Skiiers might just surprise us - come out in hordes for this event. (I still think we can take 'em though.) Trent: Course set perfect the first time...Suure.. ;) BobD: I picked up spare gloves & goggles from TJMax. Thanks for the tip! RandyS: We'll have Pics for sure..may even some video! ~Karl (Tigger)
Kent
(Kent sitting at home working) Will be in town Sunday afternoon...look forward to hearing about the event. If the "skiers" show up, my money is on Everson, Nickelson, Lindemier or Craig. Otherwise, I'll have to go with carver with the most mass....who might that be? Speedzilla
I think a good time was had by all! Approx. 25 boarders, and only 5 skiers. This is a really fun race format. We had one round where 2 riders with completely different times (5 second difference) had the same score! Exactly what I was hoping for when Setting the course with Karl. Thanks to everyone that showed up, and thanks to everyone that helped out. We are going to try and throw together another event later this season, and thanks to the positive feedback, the general manager of the hill has suggested a series of 3-4 races for next year. If you had a good time, send a quick e-mail to ski@buckhill.com & race@buckhill.com and let them know!
Neil Gendzwill
So was the winner the guy who took the straightest line or the guy that went for the outlying markers, or somewhere inbetween?
Speedzilla
So was the winner the guy who took the straightest line or the guy that went for the outlying markers, or somewhere inbetween? The winner did end up taking the fastest line with a few outlying buoys thrown in. The top 4 or 5 guys all had different strategies. There was no obvious "winning line". oldkey
The G-Team kids were very appreciative of all the effort. We brought eight kids and five got medals. They had a blast. I will shoot off an email to the race department. Sorry that I could not get any pics on the hill.....my digital camera instructions/warranty card are very specific about not getting the camera wet. the snow was great....but it would not take a break.
