Thirst Superconductor 174 (comes in core variants for left foot forward or right foot forward riders) Kessler KST 162 (slalom race board) rides beautifully. You might want more length but the mid length (high 160s to low 170s) alpine Kesslers are prized and don't turn up often as second hand for sale. You just named most of my quiver. Ditto on Coiler and Thirst. Awesome boards. I luckily just purchased a secondhand Kessler KST 171. Can't wait to try it for myself with all the hype. My wife, two young boys and our dog do this trip nearly every weekend Jan-Apr (or until the conditions drop). So, Mammoth then! I can't think of anywhere else 5hrs from LA (Google says there is some place called China Peak????). Alas I would never see you as I avoid the weekends like the plague. I mean maybe I could brave a Friday sometime [shiver]. I admire your family's dedication, that is incredible!
Bongerong
I sent Bruce my color selection (just going with a custom solid blue). We'll see how it goes.
Neil Gendzwill
Have a look through the "new board porn" threads for inspiration. There's one for every year. Here's my custom top-sheet Coiler from one of those threads. Or you could commission something. Anna Katelier has done a few designs for people, if you like her style maybe hit her up. Bruce doesn't need the art until the very end so you have some time.

Good snow, no lift lines (even on Saturday), family run and feel (none of that corporate BS you get at Tahoe or Mammoth), and they allow my dog at the base. Its honestly one of the best kept secrets in the sierras. Once my boys are older we'll venture back out to Mammoth and other mountains, but while they're young and still learning they can cut their edges on China Peak. Funny that you said you avoid weekends like the plague, I avoid Big Bear altogether for that reason. Its a bit closer but the mountain and people experience is horrible IMO.
Eastsiiiide
Well heck China Peak is just 35 miles away. A mere 7 hour drive! [Don't get me started on Big Bear.] Edited February 4, 2022 by Eastsiiiide

Does anyone know of a library of long board images I might be able to browse and select from? I imagine there are image size and resolution (?) requirements to make it look good. With a free (gimp or paint.net) program or reasonably priced (photoshop trial period) you can go crazy and make really good results that can be highly personal. You can find some super high-res artwork/comics/photo images on google and zooming in on a specific portion can have dramatic effects. Use one layer for the main image and other layers for placing logos/model names/ etc. Another plus with Bruce is that he doesn't seem to be too worried about copyright. I wound up sticking with WW2 aircraft for my boards and always sneak in a QR code somewhere that can be scanned and redirects to a url that contains board ownership info (just in case). Just remember to account for your bindings being on the board when doing the graphics. PS: you don't need to have the graphics ready until fairly late in the build.

It's true, China Peak is only 4 miles farther than Mammoth, as the crow flies. There's just the small matter of THIS that one has to drive around to get there. So 400 miles! California is quite a state. If you fly LAX--Mammoth you get an incredible sightseeing flight over the Sierra, often with some fun turbulence and banking, highly recommended. I tried to be above board with copyright. I originally considered two images, the one I ended up using stolen from a Frank Miller comic, and some album art from a band I like. I contacted both parties and got crickets. I doubt they are overly concerned about copyright violations for a one-off board for personal use. It would be a different matter if Bruce was producing boards in bulk with Sin City characters on them. Oddly enough, the band did get back to me - 5 years later! Talk about being behind on your email. At any rate if I want to use the album art for my next board I'm good to go.

Maybe somebody else can confirm whether he does something simple like a die-cut logo on the nose. I know he does the logo on the nose when using p-tex for the top-sheet. Bongerong
Bruce does not do base graphics. My topsheet is set. Its a solid color I chose which Bruce tried to color correct in samples. I applaud his effort. BTW my Prior Metal WCMR 173 has “PRIOR” die cut into the base and around year 4 the “O” started to pull away on one side. No way to fix it and it’s the side facing the tail so doesn’t drag or catch… but it’s yet another reason I’m not buying another Prior alpine board.

Here’s a few more: I don’t think they’ve updated their alpine designs in years. Base price is $500 higher than Bruce’s. Custom topsheet is $CDN400. Now you’re pretty much double the price of a Coiler.

Not if you buy from i-carve.com. More like $1000 shipped for the stock boards. My full custom 180 was about $1800 all in, purchased directly from Kessler. st_lupo
Up until I broke a binding today, I was riding my K162 and it reminded me why I would pay fat stacks of cash for another Kessler, if only this board wasn’t so God awful beautiful. Bongerong
My new Coiler Contra should be arriving either Friday or next Monday. Thanks to Bruce for a quick turnaround!! I'll be adding a K168 next time around and hopefully before next season. This will be a monumental shift in the tides as I become a "2 board kinda guy". Either way very happy I'll get to ride out the season on my new Contra. @Prior, I have a WCRM 173 with you a crack and your name on it...

Bruce said he got waxed and ground to an 89degree side bevel. I’m 162lbs, 5’11, ride 60degree f/r, and enjoy long walks in the park. We’ll see how this works out. BTW Bruce is only making 60 boards a year now as he’s “partially retired”. He agreed to make me a board because my other board broke and wanted to help me. Pretty awesome gesture!
