Utah Trip Advice

Recommended Posts

The wife and I are considering a trip to Utah. Specifically the Salt Lake area. Anybody know if there are shuttles running between the various resorts? So far we are considering Brighton and Solitude. The main priorities for us are no crowds, moderate to advanced terrain and low cost. Decent beer is a plus as well.:1luvu: Any advice on lodging or must-visit ski areas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Solitude is a nice quite mountain. Just down the road from Brighton. Very nice terrain to boot. I think you can take a shuttle bus and get on the train to go to any of the other resorts. Beer is only 3.2 unless you get a temp membership to a bar. Then 5.0 is the limit. If I remember correctly, you have to buy food to get beer. Weird laws there.

I'm fairly new to Utah, and I'm just getting back into carving. I may see you at Solitude.

You can take public bus transport to the skifields in both Big and Small Cottonwood Canyons; http://www.rideuta.com/mediaRoom/pressReleases.aspx?pressReleaseID=1142

As to the beer, you could start here;

Also; be sure to taste an Epic beer from Epic's 'elevated' or 'exponential' series. The Epic brewery is just down the road from the Bayou.

You can't taste at the brewery, but you can take it home. Great craft beer - unfiltered Belgian brews (try the 'Brainless'), his Copper Cone IPA is one of the best I've tasted. He's brewed a porter recently, 'Smoked and Oaked' which is unusual, but definately worth a taste.

I spend a lot of money there.

The Porcupine pub and grill is good eats and beers on tap - they're at the bottom of the Big Cottonwood Canyon and they sponsor local cycling.

You no longer have to buy a membership to the private clubs any one can now get into them. Beer bars only were never membership. And you don't have to buy food to be able to drink. The microbreweries maybe I'm not real sure. And they sell some wicked brews that are 8%. There are a couple microbreweries in downtown SLC. The trains (Frontrunner) does not run up to or in the canyons, but there are ski buses that go up the canyons. Just log onto UTA and you will see more info there.

Brighton is at the top of Big Cottonwood canyon and Solitude is about a mile and a half down canyon from it. Brighton gets crowded with skiers and a ton of jibbers though. Solitude is usually as the name implies.

I live about 25 miles north of SLC and have to go to the Really Lame resorts by me though.

Have fun when you come out, there is a TON of new snow in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons now.:biggthump

Also if you have the time you should ride at Snowbird. Over 3000 vertical great terrain and true snowboarding was virtually invented there.

Dimitri Milovich was working and skiing there when he came up with the idea of surfing on snow. He invented and developed the first true powder snowboard made of fiberglass with a foam core and named it the "Winterstick".

There is tons of snowboarding history in that canyon.

Stayed here a few times http://homewoodsuites1.hilton.com/en_US/hw/hotel/SLCFUHW-Homewood-Suites-by-Hilton-Salt-Lake-City-Midvale-Sandy-Utah/index.do?brand_id=HW&brand_directory=/en/hw/&xch=794932771,ZGPL4P0GU0NW0CSGBJC2VCQ

They offer a good value - hot & cold breakfast bar & a happy hour Mon-Thurs with beer, wine and a different hot food item each night offered. Inquire to see if this is still the case.

Brew pub is within stumbling distance of the Homewood http://www.hoppersbrewpub.com/

+1 on Powder Mountain!!

If you go to Brighton you must go to the "private club" Molly Greens. Join or get a temp membership by offering to buy a local a round. Food is much better than the lodge plus you get full service and without all the

park monkeys.

All good recommendations, I would suggest a rental car if you can and visit them all. I am based at Park City and the groomers are possibly the best carving terrain in Utah (we have micro breweries AND a whisky distillery!), contact hardbooter.com if you want riding buddies or more local advice.

Come ride Utah!

HEeeeeeheee! OD Rocks, Will! I sell it up here in Logan and it is a delightful romp through a 22oz. bottle of beer; add some pizza and hot-wings and you've got a winning combo. Ride Beaver and feel the carve! Drink Outer Darkness and feel the darkness!!! Yum-yum! Hell's Keep is another great offering, too.
