gdboytyler
Me, GeorgeS and Hey John headed over to Mammoth for the 3rd day of SNES. I think we also saw Frank over there. The snow conditions were softer at Mammoth, but the grooming was not as good. Especially Stump Alley, there were high ridges everywhere. But we still found some really good areas for carving. The face of Chair 3 was probably my favorite carving runs of the weekend. Anyway, we were taking Coyote Trail from Chair 3 to Chair 5. It was my first time on Coyote. It has some nice steep sections, but it is a narrow winding run with a steep drop-off, off the right side of the trail. GeorgeS was railing a heelside turn on his Kessler, lost his edge and went over the side of the trail. He hit a tree and stopped. He released the front binding of his injured leg to relieve the pain, then released the back binding. When his bindings released, his board slid away, then he slid another 50-80ft or so face first. At this point, I caught up and peered over the edge of the trail to see what happened to George. Hey John was able to call Ski Patrol on his cell phone to take George for his toboggan ride. John, what's the number you used to call Ski Patrol? After George told us to get ski patrol, his very next comment was, "Can you guys find my board?". Definitely a hardcore carver. From the emergency room X-rays, George's leg is broken in 2 places below the knee. He is suppose to see a specialist today to determine if surgery will be needed. GeorgeS, get well soon!!! Looking forward to ripping more turns with you NEXT season.
Hey John
They had the number printed on cards and left them at the ticket counters and elsewhere. I almost forgot that I had programmed it as a contact on my cell. Fortunate to have coverage at that time, too. 760-934-6011

carvingchef
George is home already, Erwin called me yesterday and told me about the accident but i wasn't sure if i should have wrote something on bol or wait for George, i emailed him last night and this was the reply i got Andrea: This is George's wife, Cheryl. George is resting in bed right now, but I read your e-mail message aloud to him. He liked the idea of the "heal fast prayers." On Tuesday he will get a referral for an orthopedist for a cast, since Mammoth Hospital only gave him one of those black leg braces. There are two hairline fractures. George says the pain medicine doesn't work very well. Thanks for your good wishes and prayers, Cheryl Steinheimer send some heal fast prayers his way
nekdut
Thanks for the chat just now Erwin, and yes I apparently did get your text but it got lost in the ton of emails/msgs on my phone yesterday unfortunately. George! Really sorry to hear this happened man. Hope you heal up real fast.
Bullwings
Damn!!! Heal up fast George. You should be up and at it by the time next season comes around. Shoot me an email if you need a referal to a good Orthopaedic doctor (or medical group of Ortho docs) - they're located in West Covina off of the 10 freeway. Nice one with the recovery of the precious Kessler

If that is the area that sucker is steep and rocky looking! Here's the trail map showing the approximate location of George's incident. Marked by the blue X. Everybody riding at Mammoth this week should go check it out. Don't get too close to the edge.
Arclite
that's just a tad out of the way of where I'm riding.
Terryw
Bummer my friend! Heal up fast, there are too few of us to begin with out here. How was your experience with the patrol? Complain to the docs so you can get good pain meds. Don't be shy. Update us when you can.
rus_11
Holy crap! George sorry to hear you got injured. Best wishes for a very speedy recovery.
GeorgeS
Thanks everyone. I'm just so mad at myself for not being more careful on an unfamiliar run. The doctor said I have more than a hairline fracture but my leg is straight so I may not need a cast but after a ct scan they will decide if it needs surgery. I've never gone off the side of a run and I've never broken a bone before now,so this is very frusturating sitting around and missing the rest of the season. Albert, thanks for the doctors number but they sent me to someone already this morning. I'm getting appointments as soon as I can to speed up this process. Terry, the patrol was great, they got there fast got me on the toboggen with out much fuss even though it was a pretty steep hillside. I saw the picture of you in your new red jacket, very cool! Erwin, you know where I live now so just stop by, I'll put the board on the porch:)
slopestar
How are things George? Surgery? Healing ou-natural?
swissracer
Just saw this post. That really bites, but I'm sure it will all heal up fine for next season. At least it was at the end and not at the beginning. Terrible either way!! Having had a few off piste/tree encounters makes me realize how lucky I was. Heal up quick, but more importantly strong. carvingchef
i know a lot of people want to know about Goerge's status, this is the last email i got wednesday night heal fast George Andrea: Hi, this is George's wife. George's 3-hour surgery went well this morning. The surgeon inserted a titanium plate with several screws to hold everything in place. Originally he had thought there were 2 fractures, but the CT scan revealed a total of six. George was in much pain after leaving the recovery room, and indeed much of the day despite strong medication. He is spending the night in the hospital tonight. Please remember him in your prayers, --Cheryl

GeorgeS
Hi all Been home a few days now after surgery. A bit of pain at 1st but much better now, I should be up and around without assistance in 8 wks. Doc showed us the ct scan with a crack right through the surface where my knee rests and pivots on. This is the reason for the operation, to push that lower knee surface back up where it should be and there is a titanium plate to hold it in place on the left side of my tibia going up to the knee like a backwards 7. I also have a pic of Gunsmoke looking like a carpet after Andrea, Luka and I had our 1st tracks on it Sunday morning. See you all next season! KingCrimson
You should get your Coda tattooed around those staples! I bet Chad would give you a free board for that. Get that leg back together! You have till July 4th in Mammoth for riding! See you around George! Theo
