I know they are supposed to have terrific trees and snow. Any suggestions in terms of places to stay that are cheap for a group of four or so? The trails tend to be kinda tight, though there are some that are a bit more wide open (under the Jet triple is nice and steep and a bit wider). If you're comfortable riding hardshells in powder, bumps, and trees, you'll have a blast, cause it doesn't get any better than Jay anywhere - especially on the east coast. Grampa Grunts is supposed to be a great, cheap place to stay - I hear it's more like beds in a dorm. Jay's new website seems a bit confusing, so good luck getting info out of it. boarderboy Posted January 7, 2009 Report Share Posted January 7, 2009 the first week planned, the second week while my wife convalesced in the Newport, (Vt.) hospital, twenty miles away. They placed two stainless steel pins in her hip after she fractured it during a twin-plank spill on a Jay "groomer." I really love the place. But even during a high-season week that saw much powder, we also had a day of drizzle and "mixed." Jay Peak has neither the great snowmaking, nor the great grooming, to recover quickly from something like that. Hence my wife's fall when she caught an edge on sub-groom ice. That said, I had a ball there - even hardbooted in off-piste trees, a first for me. If you have a quick-turning board and the skills to use it, you'll probably really like Jay Peak trails. But take along a floater stick, cause they earn their Powder Capital of the East reputation. We stayed at the resort's Inn, with a meals package, and it was a real deal. However, that was five years ago, and even then it wasn't cheap. But surely, with that great terrain, and the huge snowfall, there must be some dirtbag digs nearby. I am very envious! Enjoy! powdahbonz Posted January 7, 2009 Report Share Posted January 7, 2009 Stayed at Snowline Lodge--1/4 mile from the lifts, I think they're rates are $120 night and I believe that gets you a ticket and breakfast-they used to do the ticket, lodging and b-fast thing. Erik J Posted January 8, 2009 Report Share Posted January 8, 2009 Jay is for powder and trees. There are a few really nice carving runs but I head straight for the woods when I go. If you go after a storm, you'll be in heaven - no new snow, not so much fun. Grandpa grunts is CHEAP, not too far and fun. The liquor store is right across the street (uh, someone told me). You can stay at the main house which has both dorm style and private rooms. The honeymoon suite is not to be missed...waterbed, mirrors on the ceiling, bad 80's porn on VHS, sparkly tassles hanging from the ceiling and brown shag carpeting stapled to the exterior of the bed. They also have a common area with pool table, stovetop, community fridge and hippies. $5 all you can eat greasy spoon breakfast every morning. Last time we went we rented a house from Grandps Grunts. I don't remember the cost, it was ridiculously cheap for like 5 bedrooms. It's seperate from the main house. It has full kitchen, fridge and enough sleeping room for a small army....fireplace too. Jay was great real deal on off piste rescue the patrol signs said they would charge $50. lift tickets a deal also.They gave a discount if you had a membership somewhere else .Lots of construction there this summer so they have to be looking for a return price around.
