PolyMathMan
Got a nice set of Helly Hansen Infantry Pants (HellyTech) in a tan color. On the butt is a black grease stain from the grease that is used on the lift mechanism. I need a safe way to remove it that doesn't remove the waterproofing. I have much experience with removing grease, from GoJo to gasoline, but I'm unsure how to proceed here.

PolyMathMan
Thanks for the link, but they seem to have a kindler, gentler approach which isn't really geared to this kinda product. Has anyone else had this problem.
Allee
Yikes. I thought I heard somewhere that stuff was almost impossible to get off. If you can get the stain out, it's pretty easy to redo any damage to the waterproofing by using a wash in like Nikwax - wash the pants in technical clothing cleaner and then apply the wash in. If you're looking for ideas on what to use on the stain, I'd suggest a carpet cleaner spray - I have Bissell carpet pretreater at home, which is amazing for getting rid of grease stains, and I use it on grease marks on my clothes frequently. Spray it on and leave it sitting on the stain for a few minutes, and then dab away at it until it comes off - don't rub or you'll damage the fibres, it should come out with dabbing. A degreaser of some sort might work too. Good luck! (Today's Good Housekeeping lesson was brought to you by ...):)
skatha
Two words.... Goo-gone....You can buy it in any grocery store. It works great for any oil based stain and you will have to re-waterproof, but that's easy with the Nik products. I'd spray on goo-gone and let it soak overnight and wash in hot water. Then, look over the pants. If you still have a bunch of grease, re-do the goo-gone wash, with the overnight soak. You may need to wash a few times as you're only removing a layer of grease with each treatment. Be patient, grasshopper...
carvediem
since I hate Helly Hansen clothing I won't share any advice
boostertwo
Have you considered asking the ski area what they'd recommend to clean it? You might find that in addition to getting some good info on possible cleaning techniques, you might also have it cleaned for you, by the area. All of the areas I've ever worked at help 'greased' guests in this fashion. <img src="http://i32.tinypic.com/2a8eser.jpg" border="0" alt="Sando carves Pepi's Face, Vail, CO."> Of course, it helps to ask nicely. Hope you find a solution. B-
