  1. For what it is worth. My feet are 9 1/2 EEEEE. Noticeably widest just in back of the toes.

When shopping for boots, I tried every brand and model that the shop had and bought the one that felt the best.

I am wearing Head Stratos and happy with the fit.

Try on everything you can and go from there.

  2. kieran, XC.

    Stephane, nothing worthwhile yet.

DT, I learned today, my thought process IS flawed (more sag would be a bad idea).

Actually I found the issue today, it's not the fork it's the seat ! Well it's not actually the seat, it's the person on it :D but I'll keep at it.

  3. I've had a 2001 Giant NRS XTC 2 for years, and never really got into it until this year. It has a Rock Shox Judy XC (80mm) fork on it (coil & oil). I changed the coils for my weight and dabbled with the oil viscosity a couple of years back but not really thrilled with its lack of tuneability (yea, I'm a tinkerer). I put aftermarket Rockers (pivot arms) on the rear suspension also, which gives it 4 3/4" travel in the rear.

What would be a good replacement fork ? How much longer can I go without really messing the geometry up ? 100mm / 120mm ?

I'm thinking 120mm and set it up with a little more sag than recommended (for more extension when needed) is this thought process flawed?

I'm thinking along the lines of a used Recon / Reba as I'm not going to dump a lot of money into it even though it is in excellent condition.

I only ask here because I trust the Bombers input, know there are a good buch of knowledgeable people here and don't really have any other idea where to ask.

Any input is appreciated / jp1

  4. Sounds familiar. A wrong fitting helmet will give me an unbearable headache within 2 minutes from a pressure point in the middle of my forehead. I've often had to 'fine tune' the helmet to feel comfortable. I also used the Boeri line for years with luck, but could not find them at the end of last season, so started trying on everything I could. I found that the GIRO line fit me well. I also wanted a hard shell over the ears and went with the Sestriere model which feels fine out of the box :biggthump.........

  5. Years ago, when I started skiing with one 'weak knee' that kept me from skiing all day, I decided to try a compression sleeve.

First time I wore it, after a day of skiing, my 'bad' knee felt better than my 'good' knee!

Back to the Pharmacy I went to buy one for the other knee and have not ridden without them since!

They look like an elasticised Ace Bandage (not neoprene and seem to breathe well/don't sweat) tube shaped & tapered, just slide them up and you are good to go.

They are sized to your knee & articulate very well, and have silicone dots on inside at the tops that keep them in place well.

They are made by Medi in Germany & last for years before the elastic looses sizing.

  6. SunSurfer, a couple of things. I'm in no way putting this approach down, if it works for you go for it, but I personally do not agree with the following statement.

"This prevents the cuff from rotating properly around the ankle pivot. The original design could only work if the mount point was designed to slide on the surface of the cuff. It's not."

I've done a few pairs of HSP's and I believe that this buckle was designed to slide on the surface of the cuff (as indicated by the scuff marks on the cuff) and also to retain the cuff to the boot shell.

I would be concerned that in the full forward position the slot in the cuff will hit the boss on the boot shell (where the strap was originally) and 'pop' up over it, possibly causing a bad situation. Have someone watch when fully flexed forward. I say this because this is one part of the Mods., to open up the slot (towards the rear) to avoid this interferance.

If you had interferance here, it was probably because their was not enough clearance or the back of the buckle is rough or sharp digging into the cuff.

This buckle has a pressed /rolled rib around the outside edge of it that is often sharp and digs into the plastic of the cuff.

I sand off and radiused that edge and polished the backs of buckles. I've also added shims on some boots (as they are all a little different) to get the proper stack height to get clearance for a smooth action with good results.

Also keep in mind, it is common on HSP's (specially after boot is modified, since you now have more and an easier/ smoother flex) for the 2nd and the 3rd buckles / straps to hit each other and thus interfere / bind in the forward flex position. I trim the bottoms of the straps of the 3rd buckle for clearance & if needed the tops of the straps on the 2nd buckle.

With the 3rd buckle moved lower, I'm thinking the interferance will be sooner / greater. You can see in your picture even in the static position that the 2nd and 3rd buckle straps are very close.

But then again, maybe not as the pivot point is different, but check it out.

Have you done any of the other Mods. (the cutting)? If you really noticed that much difference in moving this buckle strap, you may want to seriously consider doing the Mods.

Do you have the Orange / Yellow (softer) tongues ? They alone will make will make a big difference over the Silver (stiffest) tongues.

If you have them, throw them in and check it out !

"And now the cuff rotates much more easily and the BTS is the flex control."

Agreed 100%, free up the boot and control forward flex with the BTS (Boot Tuning System)!

The BTS will actually be a better tuning system with the Modifications done and the boot freed up.

I compare it to the suspension on a car. You can spend thousands on Adjustable shocks, Trick springs, Sway bars, Tie bars, Wheels, Tires & whatever, but if your Ball joints and / or A-arm bushings are bad / bound up, you just wasted a ton of money.

Just trying to help / JMO -- jp1

  7. Problem solved.

Here is an Extensive Modification I came up with recently with a pair of HSP's that I received for 'Parts Only' that were cracked at the heel bail.

There is no chance anyone will be injured wearing these.

I am sure ;) it will work for the UPZ's also.

  8. Do yourself a favor & go with the Bomber's !

This is coming from someone that has always used and likes the Cateks, but hands down Bomber provides the Customer Service and maintains Excellent products.

Plus when you stop in at the Bomber shop, you won't have to listen to Fin raggin' on you about buying a 'real binding' :D :D.

  9. John E, I know there was a lot more information here but could not find it :( either.

Seems to be a gap between 4-2012 and 8-2005 missing !?

I've done a few pairs, email me if you have any questions, I may be able to help.

Things are looking good @ Lovey !!

    Take Care --jp1

  10. Wow, sorry to hear :(.

I dream of living in the mountains at some point, so I can't even begin to imagine how it must feel to leave a place you love. Good Luck with the move.

I'm sure many will miss the SKES write-ups, and I'm sure (Not sure how I'll fit in at a "real" event - but maybe I'll give it a try anyway.... ) you will fit in at any event !!
