  1. supermodel = point-n-shoot.
  2. Bullwings... see bobdea's signature. softbootsailer - supermodel? soft colorado packed powder? sure, camber doesn't matter to you. our discussions here often trend to the theoretical and hair splitting, because that stuff comes into play on critical conditions like ice and chalk that we have to deal with daily on the east coast. Camber distributes your weight out to the ends of the board. Imagine paper-thin scales under the contact areas of the nose and tail of the board. When you step on the board, these scales will read significantly higher than if your board has no camber. Actually if your board is soft enough, the scales may read almost zero without camber. This will be a big problem on turn initiation. <b>Photodad</b> - you're not flagged, come on. Put it this way - to compare snowboarding to photography, and this forum to dpreview, softboots and freeride boards would be point-n-shoots, used Burton Factory Primes, Oxygens, Rossignols are the Canon Rebel and Nikon D40 with kit lenses, Coiler/Donek/Prior/Madd etc are the 40D, D300 with pro glass. (Virus would be Leica) But we don't segregate this forum into these different camera groups, and I think that's a good thing.
  3. Semantics. I'm saying, build one board with camber, then build another one with the same geometry, materials, and core profile, but set the camber bed in the press to flat, and I would probably enjoy the one with camber more.
  4. No, this is. The dumbest technique discussion would be the one about jamming your knees together to somehow change carve radius, which is also impossible. (any posts arguing that in this thread will be deleted) This one is close though.
  5. You are correct sir. It's really quite simple. You come to the end of a carve. The board's uphill edge leaves a line in the snow that ends where the nose was last carving. Your board goes flat and you glide on the base for some distance. The downhill edge starts carving, leaving a line in the snow that <i>starts</i> where the tail started carving. If your board has a 150cm running length, and you glided on your base for 100cm while changing edges, the lines in the snow will overlap by 50cm. End of story.
  6. mmm... nope. doesn't happen. no offense.
  7. Then why did we only get a "cliff-notes" version of the women's individual gymnastics final where USA went 1-2 for the first time ever during the primetime evening coverage the other night, while last night we were treated to what seemed like a solid hour of some Croatian woman running a marathon? It was like watching paint dry. Even if they showed the gymnastics live, "excellent coverage" would have been showing it again in primetime more completely and with more drama. Instead we got snippets rushed together. It was easily one of the top 3 feel-good stories of the games, and NBC blew it. As for Bolt I think he's going to regret celebrating 15 meters before the finish when his record gets broken far sooner than it would if he had broken 9.6.
  8. If you think about this for a minute, you'll realize that if you were riding a board that was able to do this, it would have to be so torsionally soft as to be almost unrideable. Carve tracks overlap when you change edges fast enough such that the tail end of your board hasn't moved beyond the nose end of your last carve.
  9. Press conference today! Pair claims it's true despite initial hoax video... http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/claims-its-real-despite-hoax-revelation/2008/08/15/1218307173016.html
  10. Isn't that kind of like asking "do you need to snowboard?"
  11. Found a good inexpensive vodka recently. Tried a bottle of Pinnacle on recommendation from a friend. Did a side-by-side with some Kettle One I had on hand and I actually like it better. $16 for a liter here. Distilled in France with French spring water. So it's not Stoli Elit, but well worth checking out.
  12. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lies,_damned_lies,_and_statistics you should demand a refund!
  13. "There are 3 kinds of lies. Lies, damn lies, and statistics." -unk
  14. ...where I read/see/hear something in the mainstream media that covers a subject about which I am especially knowledgeable, and they get it wrong. This is why I don't usually watch the news.
  15. So in other words, you have no idea what snowboarding in hardboots will do to your knees, yes? :P
  16. I don't think they would feel the same. First of all, you can't very well get locked into a carve without a good initiation. And a bad finish will hurt the next initiation too. A rockered board (reverse camber) will not initiate period. But between two boards with identical stiffness and flex pattern but one with zero camber, the one with camber should hold a better edge because it's distributing more pressure out along the whole board. That affects the whole carve. And any efforts to load the nose or tail will be more effective with camber.
  17. You need some camber to distribute pressure from under your feet out to the ends of the board. A board with no camber will work, but it would not initiate or finish a turn very well. It would feel less responsive and not as snappy. I believe a deliberately camberless board would have to be built stiffer and therefore heavier to feel as stiff as the same board with camber. Of course, this all goes out the window if discussing powder boards.
  18. That's the whole point of this site.
  19. Yeah. Or like the 1989 catalog, my first. 8 boards, 2 boots, 1 soft binding, 1 plate. And verbage like "we're a snowboarding company and that's that." I was just trying to follow suit with the next line in the movie - the Burton catalog arrival certainly isn't <i>nothing</i>. It marks the beginning of jonesing season. My buddy and I used to make a 20 minute pilgrimmage to Ski Market just to get our copies and pore through them. I did stop getting excited about it after alpine was deleted in 2002.
  20. you know what, if being a legend in New England and in the dugout and all the friends he's made here and making millions wasn't enough for him, then buh-bye. He'll follow in Nomar's footsteps now.
  21. I wish I could get that excited about nothing! Have they gone to 1cm length increments yet?
  22. http://www.bomberonline.com/VBulletin/showthread.php?t=20350&highlight=safari oh it's no AX (or AM for that matter). 155cm running length. Inspired by the Schtubby, so it's more of a racey flex.
