jimcheen
I believe the setback number represents the distance from center(towards the back of the board) that the group of threaded inserts are placed along the longest dimension of the board. Corey
Put your bindings centered on the inserts. The board makers put the inserts where they believe the rider should stand to get optimal performance from their design. As smart as I may think I am (:p ;)), I'm pretty sure the board maker knows more about the flex/sidecut characteristics than I do. That said; I move the bindings forward if a board feels too stiff for me, or rearward if the board feels soft.
bigwavedave
If you know your the stance width you prefer, just start by putting put your bindings so that they are in the same set of inserts out from the center of the board, front and rear. This way you are centered on the board builder's "reference stance", and where the builder designed the board to perform at it's best for most riders in most conditions. If, after riding, it doesn't feel right, try moving both bindings in small increments fore or aft til it feels right.
