lowrider
Anyone have experience with ski binding screw inserts Helicoil, Brass or SS inserts. Inetrested in using them in Bamboo core non metal skis.
tex1230
Helicoils are pretty commonly used when screws strip out. Easy to install. I would be hesitant to use them is a ski with no metal though. Every time I used them there was a metal layer in the ski.
Beckmann AG
Have used SS Helicoils in many applications.
lowrider
My main concerns are sealing out moisture and avoiding the possibility of pulling the insert up through the hole in the binding mount. The helicoils OD is close to the binding mount hole size. The ss inserts and brass will only pull up to the base of the binding (as they are much larger dia. than helicoil) so if i'm carefull to install flush with the ski the possibility should be avoided. tex1230
Also be careful if you use brass. It seems like every board I've had with brass inserts had stripped threads. If you have the choice, use SS
Beckmann AG
Use wood glue in the repaired hole to keep water out, as you would for a typical ski binding mount. I have seen a metal topsheet torn off with the Helicoils and binding still attached to said topsheet. (I think it was a foam core ski) You'll have a hard time pulling Helicoils from a fiber core, provided you install correctly.
