hcw3
I've got boots from rammy (raichle 224), bindings from oldsnowboards.com (oxygen race), and I'm ready to give it all a try tomorrow at the the local hill, Mullian's Hollow (Grand Haven MI). I wish I had one of you to show me the ropes, but I think I'll have to convert a couple people around here. Once I'm sure can make it down a run I'll have to show my face at Bittersweet, Cannonsburg, or Crystal. Wish me luck! Harrison

Harrison Best wishes for a sweet day btw, remember that just like your first run ever on a board, it may feel a bit akward but give it a couple runs before making changes, and then make small changes, one at a time, as you try to close in on "your" setup. hcw3
I have to say while carpet boarding last night the whole thing was a lot less rigid than I was expecting. the boots while heavy, were pretty comfortable. the bindings while I wouldn't cal them sloppy in any way, seemed to flex a lot, does that make sense? I'm starting out ~58 front ~56 rear, 3 degree front cant, 6 degree rear. 19.5 width. Feels reasonably comfortable except the front of my thigh on my lead foot is going to be sore, I understand why want people want toe lift. harrison
Sharkey
Harrison, I live in Spring Lake. I rode at the ski bowl 1 time. it's tough to get enough speed there to lay out a carve. what you might not know, if this is your first time, is that you're going to take up waaaaay more slope than normal. That's a busy place w/ the pipes/jumps/rail crowd. IM me or something and maybe we can go to bittersweet or Crystal. I have a season pass at both. I can help you with your stance if you are having issues.... Or at least show you what works for me. Either way, welcome to carving. Get ready for strange looks and comments! they change to gawks once you get your carves down! Ken
hcw3
I will PM but, tuesday night is adults only. The rail jam crowd is greatly diminished. Last week there was 10 people on the whole hill. Even in softboots I use the whole slope. ;) Look forward to meeting up Ken! I'm already the strange guy that rides a huge board (166), hardbooting is just the next evolution. harrison

Trenchman
The Ski Bowl....I got taken out by the t-bar back in 83...what a great little hill. If you make it up to Crystal let me know, I can make it out most days with little warning. This Sunday is passholder appreciation day so passholders can get tickets for their friends for half off. Good luck deflowering your virgin run!
hcw3
t-bar? they had a t-bar? that would be an improvement over what they have now...but hey, it's $12 and the snow is good. I should be there 5-9 give or take 30 minutes. Don't know if I'll ready for the big hill sunday, we'll see how tonight goes.
Trenchman
the t-bar was scary and dangerous...it was spring loaded and would launch you when you loaded. If you got on by yourself the t-bar could spin out of position and smack you in the jaw, don't ask how I know. The rope tow it was replaced with on the back hill is much safer. There is another passholder appreciation day in march and there is always the shell 2 for 1 coupons. Have fun and stay stoked.
hcw3
Only place I ever rode a t was mount ripley in Hancock, Michigan. I remember a season pass cost $60 and that was only 20 years ago. Never had an issue with it.

Softer hard boot gear is still pretty stiff, it is a good place to start.
hcw3
My thighs hurt, but it went OK. Toesides I immediately got to track. Slid out a few heel sides and wasn't nearly as confident as my soft boot set up. The guy I was with said it looked like I was folding the poor little board in half, but I'll take that as a sign I was doing it right. The bad part is my new to me boots where absolute torture after a half dozen runs. they felt ok in the house yesterday, but out on the hill they are just way too narrow. it felt like there was a vise squeezing the arch and the side of my foot. Front to back they were fine. by the end of the night i had all my bails as loose as they could go, but my feet still hurt. I am going to have to rectify before I go to a resort for a whole day. I'm going to try thinner socks first. I don't think the red wrap style liners are moldable.
Sharkey
My feet hurt all the time too. Which is probably why I only ride for a couple hours at a time and then throw on my skis. Plus you have no "rest" time at the ski bowl. You're on your feet the whole time and the run is so short. I recently changed my stance and canted my bindings more toward the center of the board, and my feet felt much better. I had that same cramping feeling. There was about 5 hardbooters up there a few weeks ago. I was on my Prophet 100's giving them an initial thrashing.

But hey, makes it a "fitness" activity. My back leg feels fine. My temptation at this point is to narrow my stance and maybe add a little more toe lift on my front foot. Anyone got any tricks for getting the rear bail around your back heel? ar is that why people spend millions on step ins?
Sharkey
Does your rear bail have a spring in it? I can't remember what setup you have. My TD2's have a spring that 'normally' holds the bail up about 90* to the board. You'll get better at just kinda helping/holding that rear bail and picking places to stand that are flat while you do it.

I have oxygen race plates which are snowpro and there does not appear to be a spring. Last night I ended up doing the rear binding first. The front was pretty easy. Scuff
Welcome to the wonderful world of carving! ... by the end of the night i had all my bails as loose as they could go, but my feet still hurt. You must mean Buckles. :) Bails are those bent metal bits on your bindings that hold your boots in place. Are you riding *fully* in an alpine stance? If your feet have been previously trained to ride a freestyle stance (with low angles), and you've just jumped onto riding (higher) alpine angles, you feet may be drifting/pressuring the boot in awkward ways.. causing a bit of discomfort. I was folding the poor little board in half, but I'll take that as a sign I was doing it right. With a 166 Oxygen board, you really shouldn't be "folding the board in half.." Yeah...Step-in bindings are a great convenience on our short-n-sweet mid-west runs. I still prefer my standard bail bindings - and consider it just a way to warm up and expand my flexibility on each run. ;) I rode Pando once, years ago (Rockford, MI)...and it wasn't great for carving.. I know it would be a hike, but Timber Ridge & Bittersweet, Caberfae, will definitely give you more room to turn.. Crystal is great fun, and it sounds like you might also benefit from some carverly advice about your binding setup - (Flex - Might be too loose?) hcw3
With a 166 Oxygen board, you really shouldn't be "folding the board in half" Who rides a oxygen 166? I was riding an arbor 155 which I now know is too small and i'm on the heavy side. But I think the folding bit is over exadgeration for the fact that the board was flexing a lot. The boot thing is somewhat me getting used to it, but it's a whole bunch of not fitting too. I have to have my hockey skates modified for the same pressure points. They have to create side "pockets" with a press. I'd do the same but I don't think the boot liners wwould remember. I think i'll need to get some thermo liners. I just hope the shells aren't too narrow.
