Is it 2011 yet? SES. Btitish invasion

I have just convinced the Mrs that I am going to SES next year:biggthump, Wahoo. A couple of questions, is it always on the same dates? And the next one is aimed at any Brit based carvers (Dantheman, Philw). How do you travel, package or do it independantly? I can't f****** wait. Also does anyone take their kids cause I am thinking of making it a family trip. My good lady suggested that I go for SES for a week then the family comes out the week after or should they all come out SES week and enjoy the carving? Kids 10 and 8, snowboarding (softs, not for long) and skiing.

Best bet for travel is BA direct from Heathrow to Denver, then regional air into Aspen. Book early as the BA flight and regional will get more expensive the later you leave it. You may be able to find slightly cheaper options, via Canada or new yourk, but direct with BA is by far the easiest..... I don’t tend to do the package options so no idea what they offering.

You planning on hitting the extreme carving session in Zinal the week before ? Kinda warm up session?

Thanks for the info JC. I cannot at Zinal this year, gutted. I am going to try for the carving masters at Solden though.

Yea, Solden for the masters looks good, problem is getting there though, flights to Innsbruck are limited towards the end of April.... how were you planning on getting there ?

Will try to help with the other questions here:

It's not always the same dates, but pretty close. We like to keep it after Xgames and before president's weekend. We also take into consideration other events going on, like Olypmics this year and trade shows.

Kids are welcome too! Everyone can definitely ski/ride together whether or not they are on hard boots. And if you want to participate in a clinic or something, they are welcome in that as well (although it might not be so exciting for them). Either that, or Fin is volunteering to be official babysitter for the event :) Uh...but don't tell him I said that. LOL

Also, depending on what size they wear we might even be able to set them up in gear and they can give it a try too!

Just a thought for you Willow about the fam.

If I was traveling this far and trying to get the fam involved you might have them come for the week before or during. The Presidents weekend time period can be incredibly busy on most of the mountains I have been. Maybe someone Aspen local can comment about CO. But up here if friends talk about coming that week I try to have them rearrange.

We try not to make the event carry through Pres weekend for sure, but we always stay and ride that Sat after the SES (which is usually the first day of Pres weekend). In the past few years, there has been hardly anyone on the mountain. I was at Buttermilk one year and was the only person on the run, and riding the chair. I have heard that Snowmass gets a bit crowded, but in relation to the crowds that we get here in Summit it's nothing.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply. I'm not able to make it to SES this year, so I've pointedly avoided this forum so not to get too jealous and/or sad.

Also we're no longer in the UK - moved back to Oz in August due to a new addition to the family who arrived at the start of November.

Still, better late than never I guess.

I always flew United and, despite what many here might proclaim otherwise, never had any trouble. My gear goes in a Burton 185 padded bag, though this is starting to get pretty beaten up after 7 or 8 years of global travel.

However the best arrangement I ever managed was with Michelle, where she shipped my gear home to save having to cart it (literally) around the world after the session. Sending it to Bomber on the way there just saves so many hassles it is worth the cost, and saves on potential excess baggage issues.

As for getting there and back, obviously fly to Denver, but whether you go direct with BA or via Washington or Chicago is probably just a preference thing (although Chicago does have a greater risk of weather issues, which we almost found to our cost one year).

Personally I don't bother with the flight from Denver to Aspen anymore. Just not worth the money or the risk that they won't be able to land and you'll have to go via ground transport anyway. For the cost of one ticket, you can hire a small SUV for a week, and although you won't need it during the SES itself, it's great for flexibility at the start and end of your stay. If you really want to save a little more, just do two separate one ways and pick up / drop off at Aspen airport.
