This is why you don't drive drunk

Basically, a ways in front of me, traffic stopped quickly, and then the second car in front of me ran up on the curb and into the guardrail avoiding the person in front of him. When I saw that happen, I knew I had to stop quickly. Neither I nor the car in front of me were tailgating anyone, so neither of us used ABS or left and skidmarks. We didn't exactly stop casually, but it sure wasn't a panic stop either. Knowing how these things generally go bad very very quickly, I turned on my flashers just in case and then checked my rearview.

My rearview was filled with a Chevy van coming at me very very quickly. I informed my passenger that this was going to be uncomfortable by yelling the first thing which came to mind: FFFF********************CK

And then, BOOOM, the van smashed into us, lifted all four wheels in the air, and turned us 45?. The impact was hard enough that we landed on the guardrail of the right lane. We started in the left. Did I mention that we were on a bridge, too?

We ended up hitting no vehicles in front of us. When we did finally land, the impact was so hard that it knocked the front left tire off its bead, and bent the tie rod on the drivers' side. The guardrail took care of the front bumper, pass side front fender, and some stuff in the pass side front suspension. The car is now pigeon toed.

One interesting thing is that the car didn't really run afterwards, likely because the intercoolers were ****ed. The tow truck driver tried driving it up to the flatbed, but it stalled. He left it in gear with the ignition turned on, and then hooked it up to the winch. As it was being pulled up the flatbed, it started up - probably because it was the equivalent of the push start. So the car was running, in gear, and drove itself up with nobody in it - all while I was in the cab thinking "Oh f**k, I'm going to get f**king rearended AGAIN." Fortunately, someone jumped in and stopped it with literally inches to spare.

Neither I nor my passenger were hurt. Three golf clubs were snapped though.

Without further ado, here are the pics:

So, if you were stuck in traffic on 295N (in Maine) shortly before exit 17 Friday night, that was because my car got rear ended.

problem is having a top end audi brake in front of a huge bad braking distances van...if it was a bmw m5 behind you it would have stopped....now i am always adapting my braking and safety distance according to what is behind me, so i can let my braking last longer if i need to get the one behind brake longer than what i need to stop! if its a huge crappy hummer or a AmG mercedes, it makes a difference!

glad to hear only golf clubs were harmed ( besides the car)

Actually, I didn't have a panic stop myself. It certainly wasn't a casual stop, but I didn't need ABS and I was well below my braking threshold. The problem wasn't that the van didn't stop soon enough, it was that he simply didn't stop. He left about 2-3 van lengths of skidmarks before the impact.

Good to hear that nobody was hurt, unfortunate about the golf clubs though

I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago. I was stopped at a red light on an off ramp, the light turned green and then the guy behind me slammed into my rear. WTF. :freak3: I got the plate off my bumper, but the cops wouldn't do anything to help me look up the driver so I could get his information.

The driver who hit me was drunk. He barely even left skidmarks pre-impact.

Insurance means I won't be out the full value of the car, but because insurance companies have the moral fiber of pond scum, I will still be out a few thousand $ once I replace the car with a similar one.

That's a Fastlane/EZPass tag, not a laser jammer.

A few years ago, driving back home after a weekend of mountain biking in Bromont, we were on the Pont Champlaine (sp?) in Montreal - a big highway bridge - and traffic suddenly stopped. I braked and stopped safely - like you, the ABS didn't even have to kick in - but the guy behind me in some sort of large Ford SUV or pickup with a box (and pulling a trailer) couldn't stop in time. I too looked in the rearview mirror and saw him coming. Sh**! was my expletive of choice and I was at least able to get my head back into the head rest prior to impact. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to warn my wife in time so she was a little sore but otherwise ok. It's a real drag to actually see it coming.

The worst thing about my incident was that I remember passing the Ford earlier and telling my wife that I was glad to be past him because he was driving rather erratically.

My car was an '01 VW Jetta Wolfsberg and even with $6,000 damage (including labour at our local VW Audi dealer) we were able to drive it the 4 hours home safely.

I always see vans, pickups and SUVs driving fast and agressively on the highways. It seems that a lot of the drivers of these vehicles don't realize that most of them don't handle or brake nearly as well as many passenger cars. It appears that German cars have particularly good brakes...

The worst is empty pickup trucks - ie. not working trucks. Always a young male with excess testosterone.

Hey mirror70, looks like you'll be in the market for new clubs. I recommend the KZG Evolution or Evolution II if you like oversized. Sweetest forged irons on the market. Butter smooth. Add a Titleist 905R driver and Hogan Edge CFT fairway woods/hybrids and you're good to go.

So sue the drunk driver for the difference in Smalls Claim's court :argue:

I got hit by someone that didn't have insurance, so my insurance paid, but I was out my $1000 deductable. My insurance collected their $$, but didn't collect mine, sucks...I hate insurance companies. :flamethro:flamethro

Don't settle with the bastards until you've had a chiropractic check up or at least six months. I can't tell you how many people come into my office with back problems that I can definitively link to that accident 3 years back where no one got hurt. Pain is a really poor indicator. get checked its a lot easier to fix now than it will be in a few years when degeneration sets in. Its also nice to have the insurance cover it instead of your own pocket because you settled. Yes The insurance does cover chiropractic and usually quite well. the final settlement on that may give you a pain and suffering settlement that will cover the rest of the car bill. IF they really balk at adequately replacing your car get a lawyer. If you have upgrades documented they have to either allow you to remove them or replace them. I took my high dollar stereo with me when I totaled my truck. I also took the topper. If they won't replace it they can't take it.
