    THANK YOU for posting that! I have not seen this video in many years! I remember the section with Peter Bauer and Jean Nerva the most. However, I did not realize that dude was Shannon Melhuse... I've been craving for his MLY race signature board for a very long time. That's a COOL section... I did not noticed it was hardboots but more likely I didn't care because hardboots -WAS- the norm back then. Nowadays, it's as rare as dodo if it's not entirely gone.

    THank you so much! The tunes brought me back to my yesteryear youth... I remember wanting to try hardboots for so long becaues Peter Bauer and Jean Nerva made it look so cool... but during early 90s, I was too much into jibbing with my first Burton Air (the first in the series) and then K2 FAT BOB (the very first one, too) and wide stance (baseless bindings? omg, wtf was I thinking?!).

    I see that and I will raise you Shannon Melhuse riding hardboots in powder trees with Craig Kelly in '91:

    That's the whole movie, there is a significant amount of freecarving and racing in it if you scroll around.

    Things didn't work out back east, so my wife and I decided to move back to CO. :) Going to college down here before going back up there. Gonna try get my old job back from Vail in the meantime. :)

    I had in my hands, for a short time, a video taken of Doug on a near perfect day absolutely RIPPIN top to bottom off Summit Lift. He grabbed a pro videographer and it was truly great footage. While I found a way to transfer and edit the raw footage some not so nice things where said here and Doug made me swear to never post here anything about his doings.

    A real shame, most of those causing the hurt feelings have left BOL long ago and now Doug is gone. After talking it over with friends I believed it was reasonable to now mention Doug. Although he has not been active here for years, he was still ripping it and enjoying alpine a great deal. He was a kindred spirit and a very fine person. I miss his laughter and kindness already. This is a great place , great people , just keep in mind it is not forever. Enjoy!!!

    Now that explains why I didn't get to see him often here for I've always wanted to try his tickler system. Godspeed to Mr. Dryer.

    Wow. I recognize the Mistrals! And the strange board (half board or whatever that is with the bar)... did it truly worked? And the purple coiler fingerprint board... I miss the coiler's cool top sheets from a while back! If that is coiler. I'm pretty certain it is?

    Hmm, I'm a bit of a late comer.

    Uh, from what I recall, it's simply the number of Generation X, Y and Z isn't quite "large" as oppose to the 80's and 90's which would likely contribute to an explosion of the skiing/snowboard population.

    Personally, I think this is a good thing since I work in the ski industry and the more customers we have, the better business it is.

    As for snowboarding, by itself alone, I wouldn't be surprise if it seems "declining" but I would believe it wouldn't matter since down the road, snowboard will be one of the tools to use to go down the hill next to skis, telemarks, and maybe snowskates (if it ever gets legalized).

    EDIT: snowskates as in snow skateboards.

    After reading all those lines over the years including this post, I'm starting to wonder if it's a good thing or a bad thing that I'm deaf. However I usually make a smile whenever I see somebody looking at me in the ski lift lines. -shrugs-

    Awesome read, esp the uh... skinny and the retort of "long" post. :)

    Busy as hell at an academic environment. Im at the point of being burnt out -- considering returning to the hill back home. Undecided at this point (should know more within a month or two). And hello Bryan -- hope your eye got a huge speedy recovery, bro.

    Speaking for myself, I have the distinct feeling that there's only a limited number of potential topics, and after you've been here awhile, they just seem to repeat. Great for a new generation to get their questions answered (e.g., "do ski boots work for carving?"), but there's only so many times I want to read that conversation.

    On the other hand, all the suspension, geometry, and construction changes over the last few years have been great to follow on this board.

    Redundancy is the name of the game. Sometimes I respond but most of the time, I do not: considering you ARE correct that it's pretty much the same thing. I must have missed the suspension, geometry and construction changes. That reminds me, I need to find that old ski mechanic book with bunch of trigonometry in it. Awesome book. John Howe, I think.

    Can't speak for the early 2000's, but I've noticed a change in the last couple seasons. Not sure if it's me, or the cleaning out of wise guys, pig-headed jerks, and people who belong to different schools of thought on technique. Dan definitely has a point about the repetition as well. I know there are some topics I routinely find myself not clicking on.

    I'll try to step up my game in the wise guy department if you think that'll help Lee.:ices_ange

    Oh, okay. As in "wise guy department", I tend to stay away from that department of jerks/pigheaded/etc. It's kinda awkward when I got caught in between and didn't want to pick sides.

    Dan brought up a good point.

    Ding too, to some extent. But what do you do with a guy that is very insightful, but incredibly rude/offensive to the other people, or with a person that has multiple accounts, some being used for flaming? Some got banned, some got very quiet after being called out on it. A good flame war always increases the traffic, but I would hate to see this place become like TGR, or God forbid our local longboard forum...

    But, the place has changed a bit in other ways, too. It grew bigger, many sub-sections were created, so you have to go search for the new topics, sometimes hidden while in the past they were all in the main forum. Examples are the gear section, the event section and then the local section. I find that many local crews retreated into their local sub-forums and created monster-threads, with lots of good discussion away from the most visited pages...

    Oh yeah, ALOT has changed, that's for sure... I used to hang out often in the carving section and the racing section as well as NY and CO local threads. But that was like maybe 5 years ago or so? I'm gonna go re-visit those places. I've forgotten about it til you mentioned them. Thanks for the reminder.

    Well, I wouldn't argue with you on that one since I got married a year ago on top of Vail, my home mountain. :)

    I've noticed a lot less gear being put up for sale in the classifieds, which surprises me given the economy.

    Well, there's that. And no, my madd 158 will -NEVER- be on sale. :) And still have TD-2 alongside my Red RC-10 UPZ boots. I ski ALOT more than I hardboot or snowboard. The last time I rode was ... gosh, maybe 7 years ago? -shrugs- Two locals from this forum and i went riding out in Keystone, and my edge got caught and slammed on my head pretty hard. Ain't fun. :)

    EDIT: it took me a while to remember and now I do, shredjen and kress.

    Is it me or has things changed in the forum?

    I just don't feel the "rush" like I used to when I came around here ages ago (early 2000).

    I'm just wondering outloud if I'm gettin' old or something.

    Oh, yeah, this doesn't constitute for some kids to call me grandpa. :)

    And yes, I do miss this site -- just not here often as I'd like to.

  25. Has anyone used the DIN toe/heel blocks with their RC10's for aggressive skiing?

    By all means, please do. I use my UPZ boots exclusively for skiing. Yes, I'm somewhat permanently retired from alpine racing these days. Those UPZ boots are satisfactory for me -- I use Lib Tech NAS skis, so I really don't know how to really answer your question. Your best bet would be to contact Dan Yoja or any other UPZ skiers out on this forum.

    EDIT: Oh yeah, T-nutting is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY for those UPZ boots. Trust me, you don't want to have broken femurs. Uh, it's been a long time but there's a post deep into the past (maybe ... oh my ... 2005-ish) about the T-nuts. The photos are even posted alongside the right size.
