  1. I broke my Donek Axis 177 at the end of last season so I'm looking for a replacement. Donek, Prior, Coiler, etc in the mid to upper 170 range. Built for a big guy would be good too. I'm about 240 with size 29 boots. Around a 21.5 cm waist minimum. Willing to trade a Volkl 183 GS if you are interested.

    Thanks much!

  2. I bought Palmer P01s 171cm. Very fun all mtn ski that can carve medium to high speed turns. I wouldn't say they chatter becuase they handle high speeds very well. I think they are a little short for me at 6'2" I could use the 179cm. I am very impressed with the ski. I went with these becuase I found them cheap on ebay and I missed out on the sierra sale last year. Just a thumbs up for another great ski, Palmers are tip top. I'm in the market for P02s if anyone knows where to get the 172s for under $300

Sierra Trading Post has them $359 today only. They are 171's with the mounting plate. Use coupon code CYJ4652C.

  3. Totally agree Dave! I've been at it for 16 years, S&T and OEC instructor, currently the volunteer Patrol Rep and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Hell, I even met my wife on the patrol! The good days far out number the bad and make it all worth the effort.

  4. I wish I looked as good :(. How did the Axis break?

I appreciate the offer, but due to not being very good, I'm always hesitant to ride with other people. Yeah, it's kind of a chick reason not to, but there you go.

Saturday morning was surprisingly good, and once I switched over to my alpine setup I sent the rest of the day on Silver Streak. I wasn't planning on driving out there this weekend, since it looks like it'll be straight slush.

We all have to start somewhere, I'd be happy to ride with you. I'm sure Phil would too if he's not teaching.

The rear insert pack/core is pulling out. That board was built around 2005 and I've had it for around 4 years. Its lived a rough life and doesn't owe me a thing. I really loved that board, I'll be replacing it with a new Axxess in the same length this summer. Probably a little stiffer since I'm around 265 geared up, a bit heavy for the stock build I guess.

  5. I saw you riding at Timberline last Saturday...

Hope I didn't look too bad! Conditions were great for carving on Saturday morning. Stop in to the top shack and ask for Darren if you are up there. Always up for taking a run. I'm not going to be on my usual board this weekend. I broke my Donek Axis :( on Saturday so I switched to my tele skis in the afternoon. I'll probably be on my Volkl RT if the conditions are ok. Otherwise I'll just tele ski.

  6. each Area is different I guess. We have to have a tail gunner all the time as a safety in case the driver takes a spill. It is kind of redundant on some of the cat tracks but that is what the ski area wants us to do so we do it. Although we do have a few hot dogs on the patrol that keep the chain up dont use a tail gunner.

We normally run with a tail rope too. Chain up or down depending on conditions. We have some longish flats that are hell even with the chain up. The tail roper comes in really handy here, they can whip you and help keep the speed up.

  7. oh man, having the front rope of the handles undone is a big no no here. It is kinda funny, we dont even undo it when we do change overs.

That's interesting, we never use the rope on the handles. Its normally neatly wrapped around the left handle. About the only thing it gets used for is holding the handles in the folded position when we take a sled back to the top on the lift.

  8. Alpine riders in print! Don't know if its my best photo or not but I just found a shot of myself in one of the biggest real estate

rental brochures in our area. Actually there are only 3 snowboarders in the entire brochure. Two are hardbooters!!

  9. #14 still available? I have a 99 Nissan van, so I'm wondering if this will fit the factory rail. The rail just has a metal roof mount strip with two threaded holes about 6cm apart. Is that how you attached it to your Subaru?

I'm not positive if it will fit. Is it a Nissan Quest? Thule has a fit guide online that you can check your vehicle.

These feet attach with 2 metal clips. The main part of the foot sits down on top of the rail and 2 metal tabs keeps them from sliding off. Then 2 metal clips grip the bottom of the rail, you tighten them with 2 nuts hidden under the plastic cover.

  10. Effing straightliners. They pi$$ me off! Not one...but TWO people crashed into me at our local resort...on the same run! On a blue slope that was NOT crowded. Both idiots started well behind me (they were well above me on the slope). And I was carving in a 100% consistent, predictable way, edge-to-edge. (Both were skiers. I was okay in both collisions...they both exploded into a ball of flying skis and poles.)

These people were just straightlining the mountain...and clearly not in control.

I mean c'mon?it really is NOT difficult to look downhill, see someone crossing the slope, and adjust your speed so your path doesn't intersect with theirs. (Wow! What a concept!)

Okay. I know this happens, and that's ok. But is it really an East Coast thing? Do people out west straightline slopes all the time?

Meh. I don't agree with that at all. But if what I call straightlining is really the rule (and we are the exception)...then I will dedicate the rest of my carving life to convincing straightliners thaat actually turning can be fun!

    Scott

We deal with this a lot at my mountain. Mostly on one slope, White Lightning. Its a black diamond, wide and straight as an arrow, next to a lift so everyone can see you. I'm going to profile a bit here, Its almost universally a teenage boy who skis one or two time a season. They bomb straight down the run, usually on the ragged edge of control, Starter jacket flapping, poles flailing, no regard for slope conditions or traffic levels. They have ZERO intention of making a turn and less ability to actually make it happen. Its scary as hell to watch.

I think it is kind of a Mid Atlantic thing. Its like an amusement park to these people. They don't realize they can hurt themselves, let alone anyone else. They aren't raised in a ski culture where they understand and obey the skier's responibility code. They've got 8 hours to ski as fast as they can and go on every "black diamond" so they can brag to the rest of the scout troop.

Skiing a fast tight line is one thing. You can see when someone has it all together and is just hauling ass. The guys Scott is talking about are a threat to everyone's safety. Our local hills are just to crowded to handle their lack of control.

I've been patrolling for 16 years now and this is one of the very few things I will yank a pass for, no questions asked.

  11. Let me ask You a question, why are You still wearing Your board as you get lowered off the stuck lift.

That's the way we do it at our hill too. We instruct the person in the chair to leave their skis/boards on. Usually we have them toss their poles to the side so it frees up their hands.

The reasons for leaving the gear on are several. One, boards don't have brakes and will run off, skis might too. Two, that stuff is heavy and I don't trust the skiing public not to hit me and everyone else in the head. Three, we turn the evacuee so that their edge is across the fall line when we lower them. That way they don't go sliding off and hurt themselves or others when they are unharnessed. Four, gear is expensive and may be damaged in a 30+ foot drop, someone will be expected to pay for that damage.
