  1. Our electricity comes from water flowing out of a lake through a dam. I wonder if I am saving the planet by turning off my lights? Maybe I am saving water. Hope not! That would make things worse. Babies emit CO2 continuously, 24/7, not just while being driven.
  2. At least the employees get to take off "for a week to go on vacation cleverly."
  3. If a ski resort is on USFS land, they'd generally have a use permit, not a lease, so the public still has free access.
  4. They have a bunch of equipment and technique tips on the http://www.extremecarving.com/swoard/swoard.html site, have you taken a look at that stuff? Scott's written up some stuff on alpinecarving.com too. There are some guys that ride Mt. Rose that are into that and seem to be pretty good at it. Check out tahoecarvers.com for local postings too, maybe we'll meet you up there. I can show you how NOT to EC :-)
  5. I don't see anything wrong with his post. It's more interesting than most of the stuff on here. Hey Scott, you should have mentioned centrifugal force, then we could argue about whether or not it really exists :-)
  6. They're probably afraid of being sued
  7. I've never driven this route, but looking at the map it looks like if you take Highway 65 to Lincoln, then 193 up to Auburn to get on 80, I bet you could make it in around two hours to Sugar Bowl. You don't happen to have anything to do with the PAVE-PAWS radar at Beale, do you? I'd bring an all-mountain board if you can since there are some nice powder days at Sugar Bowl usually.
  8. For FRS radios, in the Tahoe area we have been using channel 5, tone 12 for a few years now. Since there are only 14 (or 22 channels depending on the radio), a crowded resort on a weekend makes communications difficult sometimes due to interference. But they are great on weekdays when the channels aren't too crowded. I'd recommend getting ones that use AA alkaline batteries, it gives you more battery options and you can always get them from a store.
  9. That's a great idea! I've tried to solve that problem a bunch of ways and never came up with that one. I think it's great.
  10. Brad, can you post any video? It sounds like you're going through the same thing I did, but never completely solved.
  11. That iron doesn't have some coating like teflon or anything, does it? Scotch Brite pads make little scratches, I'd try heating and wiping first.
  12. Carrying a board in a bag seems a lot safer, and won't slide down the hill (as fast anyway) if dropped, and easier (or at least safer) to carry down the hill at the end of the day. I know what you mean, the biggest PITA for me is having to trek to the car in my boots to swap boards or drop off jackets or whatever. My friends give me a bad time for it but I actually pick my resorts based on how close I can park to the lift
  13. It helped me to get off of the front leg and get more centered on both legs. Hey Bobby, if you are looking at getting weight off of the front leg, you might look at the Doug Dryer method of riding on the rear leg. I've never mastered it (or any other method!) but he swears it works well. There's info on him and that method on alpinecarving.com.
  14. Same at Tahoe major resorts, 2-4 on an average day. Sometimes one of us will send out emails and end up with 10-15 at Kirkwood. It's pretty impressive if we all end up on the same run. Everyone else thinks there must be some new thing happening.
  15. Can a resort lease a defined area with the Forest Service? Usually when anyone builds something on USFS land they have a use permit that doesn't have a defined area ("space occupied") and you can't keep people from hanging around your stuff since it's still public land. I assumed ski resorts had the same deal because last summer I was riding my mountain bike at the Kirkwood ski area (USFS land) for work (radio site surveys). It was legit, but it was sure weird getting paid to go mountain biking :-) Anyway, they sell lift tickets where you can ride the chair to the top with your bike. I asked them what would happen if people just came up and rode without buying lift tickets, and they said that since it was USFS land, they couldn't keep anyone from doing that, they only controlled who got to ride the lift. I don't know if this means you can ride anything you want (on snow) as long as you hike to the top yourself. Anyone know about this or have connections at a resort and can ask?
  16. Oregon Scientific has some cool stuff that's not too expensive.
  17. Does this mean there is nothing illegal about leaving the resort and riding out of bounds on USFS land?
  18. Good sig, Divebomber :-) I bet they would get in because they are a non-threatening curiosity, much like recumbents are to road cycling. We are more like the mountain bikers And gangsta kids are the BMX'ers  Has anyone here ever tried to get into one of these resorts with an alpine setup? Did you get in? I bet a lot of guys with narrow boards and high angles wouldn't have any problem. If kids in the lift line can believe that these aren't snowboards, certainly skiers could be fooled.
  19. It doesn't matter. word will spread via word of mouth, Usenet, message boards, whatever. There is nothing good about this and if Jake Burton had never been born I'd have had plenty of Sims or Wintersticks or any number of other boards to ride.
  20. And I thought the gangsta snowboard image was fading away. I guess Burton boards aren't selling as well as Jake would like. This kind of crap is the reason that people in my office look at me funny when I tell them I snowboard. I spend a lot of time on the lifts and on the mountain trying to convince skiers that snowboarders aren't all thugs trying to look and sound like white gangstas, and then this kind of crap comes along to undo my efforts. This "jab" doesn't help anyone, any cause, anywhere. It pisses people off and confirms their prejudices that snowboarders disregard the rules, and it will make them even more sure that "no snowboarders" is the right policy. It proves to them in their mind that they are right. Then they take that attitude to other resorts and I have to deal with them. F--K Jake Burton and his lame board marketing scheme. What about the "good" boarders who are surely out there trying to convince management that they are good people and should be allowed? Yeah, I bet this helps their cause And what's with all this "Bro" stuff? I have a Bro and he doesn't snowboard.
  21. I think all this will do is make snowboarders look like jackasses.
  22. This is about three years old, but it might help. From Scott Firestone's excellent site: http://www.alpinecarving.com/grind.html
  23. I've used ebay a few times and I've had never had a problem. Mostly it's been bindings, but I did buy a Wild Duck Knifer once (the skinny stiff version) and when it arrived, there was $40 in cash taped to the board with a note from the guy saying that he thought that I had paid too much. I couldn't believe it. Alpine riders seem to be pretty good people.
  24. I've heard a lot of good things about Bridgestones. I didn't mean to knock steel bikes, but the ones I had were not good rides. Schwinn Varsity that weighed about 40 pounds, Mercier 300 that was slightly small with really cheap parts from the factory (plastic derailleurs and steel cranks) and a Puch frame that was too large. A good steel frame that fits with good parts would made me just as happy as the carbon bike. But good means money, and it would still look (to a lot of cyclists) like I spent too much for how much I ride, which one or two times a week to work and back, 15 miles away).I also bought the carbon bike because I'm trying to support a company that is trying to get going again after being out of business for a while (Ibis). That's part of the reason I bought my Coiler too, and the Donek years ago, I think it's great to support small builders even if you can't fully justify the need for yourself (if you have the money to spend and know what you are getting and that it will work for you).
