  1. Sad part about this one and many before this Nut Case went off and killed innocent kid is that "we" (as in a collective of the civilian majority) focus on the gun that shot the kids. When is society going to wake up, realize and see the problem as a social problem and find someway to help and educate troubled children when they are young and being programmed to be harmful adults? We need to start somehow to fix this growing problem that is only going to get worse. If we were to start today assuming of course we understood and had the ability, it would take 30yrs to have society see any changes that would swing the pendulum the other way. Any of you have any ideas how society can change? If I were to be invited to Pres Bush’s Summit next on this School Violence issue - this is the area I would be championing, not the weapon.
  2. Iam reading an article about a Saw Blade that can detect human flesh and stop a 4000 RPM saw blade in .003 sec. ,, Wouldn't that be nice to know that I may make to 95 yr old with all 10 digits when working around my home shop. You can see this article at www.designnews.com. Fascinating! The stats showing in the article are in 2002 there we 33,144 injuries on a table saw and 3,503 amputations. Isn’t it nice that we live in an era of technology that allows some smart guys to even think there is a away instead of always saying “you Can’t do that”
  3. First thought comes to mind it is a paper work nightmare if you are talking about registering every gun. (Or are you thinking more smartly and asking to register a gun owner with a license, similar to a driver’s license which could be just an added item to your driver’s license like a motorcycle) But back to what I believe you are asking. Some owners have 50 firearms; some of those are traded/ sold on a weekly basis. Plus and god forbid -- your social security number of course goes with each transaction and trade and register. Where do you think the money will come to manage this huge undertaking? Don't even think about having it self fund it self -- we are talking government here. Second -- give me any example of any crime recently that would have been prevented if the gun had been registered. My final thought if you want to control responsibility and accountability -- they already have technology to do this, just add biometrics to each gun sold, that is only the owner can fire it. Why not simply enforce the billions of laws we have already on the books and send the criminals to prison. Here in Washington State we have a laws that add years to a perps sentence if he uses a gun during the crime, yes can you believe it a law that actually makes sense, but it is never enforced even thought the law states X years added for 1st offense and X years added for 2nd offense. They plea bargain with it to a lower sentence and they are out on the street committing the same crime, sometimes with in the same year. I am for a license to use and own a gun just like an Automobile, They are both dangerous, odd that we train and test for the use of an automobile but not a gun. Training, training and continual training and test just like a drivers license should be required to own a gun.
  4. Now I understand -- so it is all relative to where you live whether the subject is bizarre. I envy those who can live wherever without having lock your doors at night. Last night I rode my bicycle for about a 25 mile ride and passed my grocery store on the way home. Felt hungry for something but couldn’t stop because I did not have my lock with me so I could go into the store for 5 mins. and this is in a pretty nice part of the city. I had to ride home and then go back. It is a very sick and sad world we live in these days in the States, Best country in the world ???? that may be debatable these days. No I do not carry a weapon.
  5. Plus I would rather take my chance with someone not emotionally attached to the situation. Clearer head may result in a correct outcome.
  6. What part sounds bizarre? Do you watch any CNN, NBC , ABC , CBS local news? Every night I hear some else gets, raped , mugged, beatup, shot what have you. Last night was a 72 yr old nice guy living alone and 4 guys force their way into his house, bound him with duct tape and threw him to the ground to rob him. We just want to live but there is so much violence happening to innocent people on an hourly basis.
  7. I have my preferences but like anything else these are mine and not necessarily a view that all others will agree. Here goes, in an auto handgun for self defense I want several required options on my piece, first a magazine disconnect from the trigger that is to say if the magazine is out - the gun cannot fire, Second the gun must have a visible hammer, and Third and most of all a friggen safety lever and decocking mechanism. This is the reason I will not and never will own a Glock, they are fine pieces but do not fit my safety list. I have several pieces but a couple of favorites is my Beretta Cougar model 40SW with the above features and a Beretta Cheetah .380 with the above features. I also own a Browning Hi-Power 9mm but since it is single action only and no decocking mechanism I would not use it for self defense. FN just brought out what appears to be a nice auto, but Beretta is my favorite and I have shot most what is out there. The Sigs are ok but do not feel as good as the Beretta both in handling and shooting but we are back to personal choice like stepins or not.
  8. . All of this self protection sounds good on the surface but I wonder if any of the hypothetical cases, like running in to save your daughter actually is feasible. What I mean is that most of us are normal "Joes" going about sitting at our desk designing whatever on our computer or fixing cars for a living. Do you really think you can all the sudden change into this crack shot with nerves of steel and accurately aim at the head of an intruder who is standing next to your family? Law enforcement types are professionally trained, continually in those situations, emotionally trained and by the way emotionally detached from your family members, and these guys do mistakes. Do you think you can do this – really – it is a very big mistake to think you can survive these situations unscathed if the last time you shot your handgun was 5 years ago. Be sure to get the proper training if in fact you are trying to protect more people than “1” in your house.
  9. Silly gun law--- In California there is a law outlawing the civilian ownership of Barret's .50 caliber big a** rifle. It weighs a bunch and is almost as tall as I. The City of LA I believe has these rifles in their SWAT dept and maybe other cities in CA as well. So what happened next after CA outlawed the civilian use is the President of Barret sent a scathing letter to all CA Police Depts that had their rifles saying Barret Mfg will longer service or repair any of their rifles from any CA Agency. Next, the same rifle is now available in .416 caliber which is legal in CA and just as powerful. Legal because the law outlawed the .50 caliber not the rifle. The only downside to this silly law is now no CA agency can get there rifles repaired or serviced. I know of no crimes ever been involved with this big gun so there is no history or reason for it law. Would it not be in the best interest of gun laws to outlaw little guns and make the ownership of guns based on they MUST weigh 20lbs and be at least 6 feet long and have a capacity of at least 40 rounds. No, instead our dumb legislators make laws like they did in Clinton era making a law that limited magazine capacity to 10 rounds. What that did is it brought forth a new wave of handguns in this country that were smaller and more concealable because the magazine was so short. Would it not have been the smart thing to require all handguns have a minimum capacity of 40 rounds so the grip would be 20 inch long? How well do you think bank robbery would go if the guy came in dragging a 6 foot gun or a handgun that was the size of a chainsaw.
  10. Jack, I think you are correct we really do not care about accidental death. Most likely due to the fact we all think it is going to happen the other person - not me. Case in point - we are still very tolerant of drunk drivers here in USA compared to several Euro countries. I wonder what the Stats on Drunk drivers killing or injuring compared to a gun killing or injuring. My bet is on the drunks kill or injure more.
  11. sad part - one of many - our kids are growing up each year with less education about firearms. 50 yrs ago when I was a kid we handled firearms of all types in the house. I had 1 sister and 3 brothers and when the parents were to leave for an evening, and we were left alone never once can I remeber did we get the guns out of the closet to play or handle them. sure we could take them out to clean them but safe handling of firearms was taught to us early on. Now days how many times do you hear about a 14 yr old accidently shooting his best friend, I do not remember anyone I grew up with ever being shot. When I was in elementry school I brought a long gun, 45/70 to school for show and tell. I carried that thing as I walked to school. Sioux City Iowa, pop 100,000. Yes Society has changed but instead of trying to control weapons - lets spend some money to figure out what is wrong from today and yesteryear. Fixed it. ( Side Bar - if your 3 yr old keeps writing on the wall with crayons, you are in one of two camps. Either you teach them why you should not write on the wall or you take the crayons away. Which are You?)
  12. Alright how about heavy and strongly suggests that one carries a gun or weapon, not a rule. That way the Perps don't know till they try. It could be like playing poker, sometime you'd win but most of the time you'd lose. [ if you were the Perp that is]
  13. I like an old Florida law. It states if you are walking to Church on Sunday morning alone you must carry a rifle and 20 rounds of ammo! I wish the states would modify that to "anytime you are walking alone you must carry a weapon." Be helluva lot less crime and the few innocent people hurt would be <5% of the Crime victims today and tonight.
  14. Watch for duty fees also if you buy from Blue tomato and have it shipped DHL. About a month after you recieve the item you'll get a bill for the duty charges from DHL. I recently bought a Hot Blast 178 and the first shipment was damaged so I emailed Blue tomato with the pictures of the damage and a claim number I filed with DHL, Blue tomato sent a new Blast out to me very quickly but I am now fighting DHL for double duty charges since there was two shipments. That shipment was last December and it is now in a collection agency and they are going back to DHL with my argument - 1 board - 1 duty charge.
  15. It made a difference to me at Stevens one day - me being an old 59 yr old guy and I was on my 178 Volkl with step-ins and this youngster got on the chair with me. He had the typical 3 strap on a about 150 freeride and he looked me and my board and said "Hey you wanna race to the bottom?" I looked at his 3 strap set up and said "Sure" So we get to the top and he goes over to sit down to strap up and I stepin as I get off without stopping and as I passed him I said " See ya at the bottom and was up to full speed before he even got of his a##. I met me in the lift line and did not say one word to me , just starred at me and my board.
  16. We also have coyote problem here in Seattle area, recently we had a little girl bit by one and possibly tried to drag her away, after several days of being seen and one guy actually filming the coyote on his cell phone attacking him and then backing off the Sheriff showed up and took a couple of shots at him. He missed but the the coyote turned to see what was going on and then a bullet slammed into his head for the last view of man kind before he went to coyote heaven. Sad news is the head was shot up and they could not do rabies test so the girl had to go thru ugly painful treatment.
  17. My fish in the picture is a sturgeon caught in Columbia River using a 5lb Shad for bait.
  18. SO EVEN YOU WANT MORE LAWS. Sorry D-Sub -- had to say it!
  19. Hey D-Sub here is a list you might enjoy These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts, and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters who had the torment of staying calm while these exchanges were actually taking place. WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar. ATTORNEY: But could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless? WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.
  20. I am not proposing new laws D-Sub -- I guess we would be ok if we enforced the ones we have and had a few judges with some backbone and prosecuting attorneys that helped get these guys off the street. I have talked with several cops and one of the most fruistrating things for them is to keep arresting the same guys each weekend.
  21. I do not go - your are right. Unfornuatley most of the seats are taken by corporate and then handed out to favored few. It is sad that most lower income can not afford to see major sport event.
  22. Lets get real D-Sub -- You have an idealistic vision of society. Sure it would be nice if we only had 2 laws - do not steal or kill but the real world is here and there are a lot of bad guys out there. We have a much screwed up society now days - even our public school system is screwed up due to restrictions of all types and very low funding. If we could improve our education system we might improve our crime laden society but as long as we continue to degrade our education system we will have more and more crime and yes low level crime does propagate to higher level crime. Check it out --for 1st and 2nd offenders they are generally lower level break-in, burglary, 7-11 hold-ups and stealing cars. Do you think these guys stop here? We just may have to agree to disagree here but I will say in closing that the criminals are damn lucky I did not become a judge or Prosecuting attorney.
  23. I love capitalism... I hate lawyers so lets just apply the limits to Lawyers. Just think if there were only lawyers that understood "excess". We workin folk could then afford to attend a Pro-Football game because a runningback is paid a mere 3 million $$ contract instead of a $40 million. Or the Point Guard was paid a few million instead of $70 million. But then we would not have the big guys get off with murder like OJ Simpson.
  24. Whoa yer self there big guy-- are you saying we do not need prisons? If not at what number do you think we should stop. 2 per state, 3 , 4??. So if we then fill them up with criminals do we then just open the back door and as new recruits go in the front the ones that are half way thru their sentence go free out the back door? What cha saying here? Laws do prevent crime - imagine if we did not have any laws. What you have to do is enforce them then and only then will they prevent crime. And if we do not start enforcing the small crime like breaking into ones car for a radio or whatever, then we only have ourselves to blame for the bigger crimes that actually hurt or kill people.
  25. I wonder how the arrest / conviction rates would campare in the two countries. Here in the good ole USA you can pretty much be assured if you commit a crime you can get off with a hand slap. For example - look at a car theft by someone 16- 25 yr old and see how many times he has been arrested for that crime. Or a guy robbing a bank for the 3rd time - he is not supposed to have a gun but he gets one anyway but he is 98% of time not tried or convicted of that crime. We are much to soft on crime in this country and we desperatly need more prisons and fewer rights and luxuries while the Perp is in there.
