1. I hear you loud and clear, and I wish I could write that article. I think you could probably count on one hand how many people in the world are qualified to write it. I know one. One would have to have set up about 100 people's bindings, spending at least half a day with each person. By the way, it doesn't take much outward cant to make a difference, like half a degree. JIM - I too am surprised - nay, shocked.
2. Mike - love it. Can I use that in a technique article?
3. Well, he could have been more diplomatic, but in a Forum that is historically heavy on technique and in a thread that is specifically technique based, posts like this are not out of bounds. Sure, in carving there is tons of room for individual "style" and "expression". However do not confuse the terms style and technique. In style, there are no fundamental rights and wrongs. In technique, there are. We now know that carving with the knees purposely forced together all the time is simply wrong, just as it now is in skiing as well. Presumably someone posting technique questions wants to improve theirs. Otherwise, they are flame-baiting. They should enter these threads just as they would an on-hill lesson - with an open mind, and some humility. They should be ready to hear what they are doing wrong, and also perhaps that their equipment is obsolete, and not take it personally. There is absolutely no use for "hey if it feels good do it, man" posts in technique threads.
4. jn, this article might help if you haven't seen it yet: http://www.bomberonline.com/articles/canting.cfm
5. Right on Billy. Can we play good cop/bad cop again sometime?
6. www.tinypic.com - great for onesey-twosey image hosting, not whole albums. You upload a pic and they give you a URL to it. images expire after a few months. (3? 6?)
7. Wish I could get out there to see you drag your nipples again! But it's not looking good this year. Having 1 and 4 year olds makes travel difficult!
8. I dunno, but when I used Burton bindings (shudder) I remember eyeballing those cants to see what the dealio was. I mounted the cant on the board and then held the tail of the board up to my face and sighted down its length. Looked like the cant was sloping only along the long axis of the board to me. Never got out the protractor though!
9. I'd like to see Madd offer the 158 and 170 in both 18cm and 20cm flavors. I think the 180 is perfect at 19cm. But dude, what size are your feet? Mine are 10.5 or 11 depending on shoe brand. I'll ride anything from 18cm to 21cm. I'll never forget my first 18cm board - I was scared I was going to hate it, but it was no problem at all. Just nudge up the angles and go. Sure, it makes a board that is already not great for freeriding a little worse, but if you care about that, buy a 4WD. 5mm means what, 1 degree? Maybe 2? Don't love it till you try it!
10. Nope. Burton cants slope purely along the long axis of the board - same as the TD1 cant/lift discs. So on TD2's, that's your cant disc set at 90 degrees.
11. EDIT please choose the combination that best describes how you TYPICALLY set up your bindings on the alpine snowboard you ride the MOST. Pick ONE front foot response and ONE back foot response.
12. The 180 has a 19cm waist. Trust me, you will not miss the 5mm.
13. Nope, not at all. Try a little outward cant on your back foot just for grins. Like half a degree. Try dropping your rear knee into toeside turns and feel it underneath you.
14. I think a more natural "default" position is with toe lift on the front foot, heel lift on the back foot, and no cant for binding angles of about 55 degrees or higher. I would strongly recommend starting there and experimenting. I don't see much reason to cant the rear foot inward unless you are somewhat knock-kneed. 15. Yes. Another way to put is, shoulders level to the slope.
16. Do Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, etc. have to pay Canon royalties for making lenses that fit Canon cameras?
17. Well, that depends on what your definition of "together" is. -Bill
18. Sorry mud, this one just frustrates me to no end. If you think about it for 10 seconds, you'll understand why this concept is simply wrong. The only thing you *might* accomplish by jamming your knees together is to put a kink in the board between your feet, which is not what you want. timinor - LOL!
19. No, no, no, no, no. This has been disproved so many times on this forum, I'm not even going to waste time doing it yet again.
20. I think when you say "like yours", you are referring to JJFluff, and when you say "square" you mean tilted into the turn, yes?
21. JJ, try this: get on your bathroom scale. Put your knees together. Take them apart. Tilt your shoulders one way. Then keep them level. Do you weigh more in one position than another? No, you do not. One position does not pressure the edge any more than another. (different positions can pressure different parts of the edge, but that's another discussion) It is all a matter of balance, and what position gives you the most balance. If you feel most balanced in a certain position, then rock on brother. However it is simply a fact of body mechanics that you will have better balance with independent knees, and without tilting your shoulders into the turn. On hero cord, it doesn't really matter. It is only when conditions get choppy or icy or otherwise non-ideal that you'd benefit from a more balanced position.

24. might be doable on a Prior ATV or Swoard, but at size 12.5 you're pushing it.
