Sad Day in the Eastern Sierra's - June Mountain Closing

Like everybody else I was crushed when I opened my email and saw the letter from Gregory regarding June. The last carving session there with many of the gang was my first time returning to June since the first day I tried snowboarding some 24 years ago or so. On my return I found that it was an amazing day with some really great people, all celebrating and showing their passion for the sport in the way only a fringe sport can evoke. I left dedicated to the fact that I would return and that June was to become my new favorite place to ride. I am concerned for the town and what the closing of the resort will mean for the store owners. I do not foresee Mammoth selling June as it would merely create a competitive entity. I do think it will reopen if we are blessed with an abundant year of snowfall and they can recoup the losses but as others have mentioned this may take some time. After I have won the multi-state lottery I will purchase June and make it an all carving mountain with perfectly graded slopes offering specific pitches for every taste, board type and riding style. Of course all carving session attendees will receive free life time passes and a new board of their choosing each year. In the spirit of making lemonade, I am wondering if we all reached out to Mammoth what their response would be and if they might help us do the same there. Mambo is a well pitched run and does not receive a lot of traffic. Perhaps we can convince them to let us have our gathering there. Never hurts to try. Long live Mammoth and may June return shortly...

Whats up BarryJ, I recently re-visited June Mountain after a 24 year hiatus. The first thing I noticed was how wide many of the runs were and that the pitch of a few were ideal for perfecting technique (Gunsmoke specifically!). It has a very chill atmosphere and it was nearly void of people and this was at the beginning of spring break. Worth a try in if you make it to the area. D

Have not yet found the balance transfer/weight shift etc. to get my heel side turns to equal my toe side turns. May have to pickup some padded long underwear and just stat balling it up til I get it ha ha!

Puddy Tat / Snowboardfast, yes I think you are correct and I know Sean is a true renaissance man when it comes to his craft. Which is exactly why I bought a custom board from him last year. I was recently in conversation on this topic and wanted to reach out and see what others thought as you gotta wonder what other builders are doing/or not doing.

So you save your money and you buy a new board based on your personal research, word of mouth and the info from the board company. If you're really lucky you get to try the board you want prior to buying. But which board do you buy if you are a bit bigger than the average rider? We have all seen/heard/read the recommended rider weight ranges on boards or websites, "Board A Model 1 is recommended for riders from 160-190lbs, and Board A Model 2 is recommended for riders from 190-220lbs." So what about the bigger riders, the ones that go 6'-6", 280lbs? Are these knuckle dragging, camber crushing gorillas going to be stuck with chatter and washing out because they are overpowering these boards? Should big riders seriously consider going to a custom shop where the scientist/craftsmen will allegedly use their magic and create a board truly specific for their size and weight? A board that even King Kong can rip on at speed. In the store sure model 2 is a bit longer than model 1 but is there really a difference in materials? Are they using additional layers and thicker cores or a mix of both? Perhaps only a micrometer carrying buyer can tell the difference. To assist those of use without the tools or knowledge I submit the following. In summary when you purchase a board, whether it is a custom or an off the rack, how is the rider weight difference compensated for and is the board really manufactured differently? Now I recognize that getting a clear and concise answer may be difficult as this gets into the mystical magic of board building. An area that builders tend to be a bit secretive about, ha ha, and with good reason as it is the inner workings that determine the winners from the losers. Thoughts, expertise and wisdom sought... D

I am in for Saturday, rode a few hours this morning at Mammoth and the snow was great! The visibility then went flat and the crowds exploded so I called it a day. Fingers crossed for tomorrow, look forward to meeting some fellow Samurai regardless of the weather. D

What's up George, hey I am headed up tomorrow to get some turns in. Not sure if I will make the carving bonanza at June saturday though as it may be raining. Also not sure if you are an MVP member but Saturday they are doing early ups for MVP holders. In other words only MVP holders will be allowed to ride from 730 to 830 Saturday morning!

Ginofultano, for get the soft stuff and go all in, you will not regret it. The difference between a full alpine set up and a hybrid are ten fold. Try to get a rig on here used would be my recommendation. You will reap the benefits! D

Gcarve, great ridin with you and yours, sorry we got separated. I will be out tomorrow at 930 again on stump if you are still around. Gonna ride the Donek tomorrow. Figure 930 might be better and I would let it thaw a bit as the early am was a bit to hardpack for my preference.

First ride on a SIMS burner

To all those who may not have ridden a SIMS burner I offer the following. For perspective I have been riding carving boards since about 92 and ride pretty aggressively and even when I don't I can give a board a workout at about 6-3 275 Lbs. I only get about 15 days on snow a year and would put myself in the mid range of general carvers in regards to ability. On 2-20-11, I had my first true ride on the seemingly mythical, love it or hate it, SIMS Burner. This was a 188 model in great shape and I was to ride fresh early AM corduroy at Mammoth. Now I say my first "true" ride as I had about 30 minutes on it last year but was chomping at the bit to ride a brand spankin new Donek custom FC I had ordered. So I only had it out for a short couple of runs. On the first run I biffed it after a mere 50 yards ha ha, and I was immediately humbled thinking to myself this is going to be a really long day. So that was then and this is now, back to this February. I took it up and came down slow getting the feel for it. Everything slow and methodical. It was very smooth, without chatter and as others have stated, just rock solid..."like a closet door" ha, I think is what I had read once. By the third run I opened it up a bit and laid over a couple toe-side turns. The burner exuded confidence and I tried a few heel-side turns. Both felt great and I found that with the swallow tail it does seem to ride a bit shorter than it's 188 length. It does need some room though and for me I found I really had to be pushing it all the time to get it to turn sharply. It was not a board to just cruise on and by the end of day two I was ready for something a bit more user friendly. Bottom line, after figuring it out to the best of my 15 days a season ability would allow, I said to myself, I will never sell this thing! In summary I feel that when I am fresh and on my game, this thing is a blast to ride and the whole time I felt like it was saying, "Come on dad, let me off the leash, I want to run." If you are a big guy and ride hard with a solid ability you will probably love the burner. For me it is a better board than I am a rider as I told the two dozen or so people who asked questions about it in the lift line, but after this past week, I feel I had tamed it enough to really start enjoying it and found myself thinking hmmm I wonder what the 197 would be like... D
